I talked to a square dance caller this morning (trying to get
information on a clubs "lessons" -- it's one of my other hobbies), and
she said she dances with a ham radio operator. Unfortunately, I forgot
his name and callsign.

I remember at the 2000 National Square Dance Convention in Baltimore, Maryland...across the street from the hotel was a National Guard Armory,
and there was a local club Field Day site set up there. I considered
going, but didn't...I didn't realize that I could've operated "third
party traffic", under a club callsign.

But, I don't get out to Field Day operations anymore...it's usually
too hot...plus, the stinging insects are attracted to me. If I do go
out, it's to Winter Field Day, as I don't have the bugs to worry about,
but you can still get a sunburn in the winter up here (when it's summer
where you are).

Three hours of square dancing is equivalent to 6 miles of walking. Of
course, after a dance, many go out to eat (even though there are snacks
and non-alcoholic beverages at the dance). One area club goes to the
local Subway Sandwich shop. Years ago, there were Shoney's Big Boy
Restaurants all over the place, but they're virtually gone from Arkansas
now. They had fantastic breakfast buffets, and "the banana hot fudge
royale sundaes". :P

There you go, do two things in the same trip. ;)

I regret I didn't realize that...but, as noted, I don't go out, except
for doing license exam sessions.

However, I've come down with a bad case of viral bronchitis (at least
it wasn't pneumonia)...so, I'm staying in much of the week. I went to a
local emergency room the other day, as I wasn't sure if it was
bronchitis, or the early stages of pneumonia. I nearly lost my voice
yesterday morning (no doubt, some would count that a blessing <G>), but
I've got a strong antibiotic I'm taking right now, and catching up on
sleep. So, the BBS work is very limited for a few days.

Well, I have been offline for the last 6 weeks. I suspect a Microsoft
Windows Update (that was my first mistake <G>) is to blame...as Internet
Rex kept crashing in daemon mode. But, we've had nearly nonstop
thunderstorms for that time...this has been the stormiest tornado season
I've noted in the 43 years I've been in Arkansas. But, after 28 years of weather in ham radio, I got burned out, and switched the callsign on my
59th birthday just over a year ago, and the emphasis to railroad
crossing safety. The license expires when I turn 69, and we'll save any
snide remarks for the Fertilizer Net. <G>

Back to the weather, while Arkansas has had tornadoes, large hail,
damaging wind, and flooding rain...compared to states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, among other areas...we've just had "a glancing
blow". Harrisburg, about 100 miles northeast of Little Rock, had an EF-2 tornado, and Jonesboro, in northeast Arkansas, had an EF-3 tornado. A
shopping mall was virtually destroyed...but it was CLOSED due to
COVID-19. There were only 23 injuries in the Jonesboro tornado, but no
deaths. And, the supercell that hit Harrisburg hit Memphis, but
thankfully, the tornado had dissipated before it got there.

And, they're noting the Gulf Of Mexico Waters are "very warm"...so, if
a tropical storm or hurricane gets in there, and the upper level winds
are right, the Gulf Coast is in trouble.

I love running on Linux, no weird MS update screwiness. Windows is a fine client/desktop OS, but I much prefer Linux for server work. And I class a BBS as a server process.

Haha as long as you don't end up as fodder for the fertilizer net! :P And ouch, sounds like a bad severe storm season over there. We had our worst fire season, nationally speaking, ever. I know of no previous fire season where there were major fires in 4 or 5 states at the same time! However, the weather gods were kind, terminating the fire season early, when moisture started coming off the Indian Oceak in early February. The fires were out by the end of the month, after many inches of rain.

Locally, it was actually a quiet season. Light fuel leads and less severe weather conditions helped.

What does QZ mean in Railroad Terminology?

Quiet Zone. The locomotive does NOT sound the horn/whistle
at the highway grade crossing, unless they are meeting another
train on another track...or in the event of an emergency (a
vehicle or person on the track).
