That is too bad. When I was younger, it was fun to get out the SW radio
and find the BBC, Radio Moscow World Service, Voice of America, and
several other stations from far away places. I used to listen to Radio
Moscow hoping I would hear something I was not supposed to, like a spy!

I would also pick up some broadcasts that sounded like some despot giving a loud speach to his countrymen in what sounded like Spanish. I knew a
little Spanish, but they always talked too fast for me to pick up much.

I am about 30 miles north of the former west coast VOA (Delano, CA) and travel past it on the highway, which is quite visible. It is an impressive antenna farm located just west of Delano. One of our customers' shop is just a couple miles south of the site and I have had the opportunity to pass by. (35.754696, -119.278953)

several other stations from far away places. I used to listen to Radio Moscow hoping I would hear something I was not supposed to, like a spy!
The Cold War was still on then (c1982).

My grandparents used to have an old Blaupunkt (SP) console stereo with a record player (33, 45, and 78 rpm), AM, FM, and SW. I used to listen to all sorts of things. It was given to me when I was a young adult, around 1982, but the string that connected the tuning knob to the internal tuner broke and I was unable to repair it.

I would also pick up some broadcasts that sounded like some despot giving a loud speech to his countrymen in what sounded like Spanish. I knew a
little Spanish, but they always talked too fast for me to pick up much.

I cannot seem to remember just what I listened to back then, but do remember listening to some local hams talking on a programmable scanner...

Sadly, we moved three years ago and I haven't put up a proper antenna. I have a vertical in the back yard, but the K9DOG chewed through the coax and I haven't replaced it yet. I will likely bury the coax in conduit to keep her away from it.
