    Tony,

That was based on John Steinbeck's "Of Mice And Men" with Lenny and George. Lenny was the smart one, but George had a mental disability. The character was also used in several cartoons, both with Looney Tunes (Warner Brothers), and Tex Avery's "Screwy Squirrel".

Ahh, OK. yeah helps to make sure we're all on the same page. :)

    Tony,

Taking the 5th, or taking a 5th?? <G> Several years ago on a train trip, my Dad, my brother, and I, saw this black woman who was "the spitting image" of "Mother Jefferson" on the show "The Jeffersons". I remember "she always wanted her brandy". <G>

Well, I started calling area BBS's in 1985, but didn't get into telnet until maybe 2005.

We experimented with telnet in the late 90s using OS/2 and SIO/Vmodem, but with a slow 2400bps modem in the path, had a lot of issues with Zmodem timeouts, because of the network buffering along the way causing timeouts.

Usually...it would be stations about 100 miles away in Tulsa I would
pick up or wanted to. Oklahoma City was/is still the same as Salt Lake City...300 years in the past. Heard people say we can't time
travel...but you head to some of these places in the Southern US...it's amazing some of these "people" can walk up right...much less talk.

Folks wonder why I'm different, as I don't talk like Arkansans. I
tell them that's because I was born and raised in the Miami, Florida,
area. My late father's job transferred the family here 43 years ago.

For some reason...seem to remember that the lowest level here could be
had years before without code. My ears suck & have a hard time hearing
    the difference between a dot/dash. That's why I didn't get my ticket
until code was no longer a requirement.

With the nervous system damage from 2 lightning strikes over the years,
with a concussion between the 2 of them, I never could copy code, either.
When the US came out with the No Code Technician license in 1991, that's
when I got into amateur radio. After the Morse Code was removed in 2007,
3 months after my wife died, I used HamTestOnline to go from Technician
to General in 14 days, and from General to Amateur Extra 13 days later.
It was the best money I ever spent in amateur radio.

Being a loner all my life (being raised that way from 10 years
old)...many things I enjoy are things you do alone.

Being single and home alone, is where you can poop with the door
    open. <G>

Have found at least here in the Colonies that the ones who screw you
over the worst are the 1st ones to beg to be cured...like if they had
done the easy/smart thing in the 1st place...they may not have been in that situation. I wear a mask at work (required) & when shopping (required). On the other hand...riding a scooter...naturally practice social distancing. Even keep a decent mask still in the wrapper under
    my seat.

They are now talking about wearing goggles with masks. I guess the
next thing will be to say that "you only pee and poop in your own
toilet at home". That'll go over real well...making that incident in
Calfornia, where the woman who was angered by being told she had to
wear a mask in the Verizon store, that she dropped her pants and
panties, squatted, and peed on the floor. The cops got there shortly
after that, and arrested her...then it was discovered, she had several shoplifted/stolen items in her car.

The funniest story I heard, though (I likely have noted this elsewhere before), was where 4 ol' boys were sitting at a restaurant table in

This drop dead, gorgeous, curvaceous female, walked up to them, and

I wasn't aware of ThumbDV, I will have to take a look at it. It's so
much cheaper than a full rig, but it is still amazing how much it runs when you think about what you're actually buying.

Most ham radio operators are what I call "frugal cheapskates". Ironically, I've seen them lay out a $100 bill or two at a big hamfest to buy a "brick"
of 250 prize tickets. Of course, if you win the grand prize, you got more
than your investment back, by selling the rig. But, it makes those like
myself who spend only $20, at a disadvantage. Yet, it only takes one ticket
to win...and it's the luck of the draw. Or, they'll go out and spend big
bucks for a ham radio rig...and won't bat an eye.

Yet, they are screaming about the soon coming $35 fee for amateur radio operators in the US and its territories, to get a new, renewed, or upgraded license...or change their callsign (sequential or vanity). I heard one country's ham radio license fee is $500 for its term. I don't recall the country, but if that's true, $35 is a bargin. Yet, I've heard many swearing
up and down that they will quit the hobby when their license expires.

As of August 3, 2021...it has not shown up in the Federal Register...and
it will have to be there at least 30 days before it takes effect. I'll bet there'll be a lot of applications for callsign changes or licenses (new or upgraded) before then. One can't renew until from 90 days before, to 2 years after expiration.

I took a look and they do put out a podcast version. It's on my "to listen to"
list. It's a long list so I'm not sure when I will get there.

So many things are on podcasts now...and there are phone apps for it.

You're not the only one -- Welcome to the Decrepit Old F@r+$ Net (hi hi).

    Well THAT'S depressing!!! ;)

Especially since I'm now a heart patient. I had to be ambulatory to a
local hospital July 29, and was hospitalized until August 1. I was diagnosed with atrial flutter...the heart rate was 155. Two injections of medicine in
the IV didn't work, so they put me on a cardio drip. I now take a blood
thinner twice a day, and this other pill to stabilize the heart rate and
the blood pressure. I see my cardiologist this afternoon, and pacemaker
surgery may be needed. I just hope I don't have to give up using things
like the microwave oven, computer, and cellphones...let alone driving.
But, if these come to fruition, I have to sell the car, and that will
also cut me off from the outside world, and out of my hobbies.

At least the cost of BBSing went down over the years. I can still discover new places and people without a bunch of gear.

Especially in relation to hardware and software. But, at times, the commercialware can be pretty steep. However, if you can get a license
for more than one computer for the same key, that makes it more palatable.
