• Introduction

From Tony Langdon@432:1/101 to All on Tue Jul 12 11:29:00 2016
    Welcome everyone to the net.

Thought I'd better introduce myself to the net. My callsign is VK3JED, licensed since 1989. I've held this call from the start, though in 2008, I did pick up a second callsign, VK3IRL, at the request of a dying ham friend who wanted me to have it.

Most of my interests are in the VHF/UHF end of the spectrum, from ragchewong on local repeaters, to IRLP and Echolink, and I have an interest in D-STAR and other DV modes (D-STAR is the only one accessible from here). I used to be active on satellites several years back with good results.

On HF, I do mostly data these days, Winlink and other data modes, though time is a bit limited. When I had the time, I used to enjoy operating portable from remote areas, often getting better results than I did from the home station.

These days, my priorities have shifted a bit. I've become more sports focused, as well as domestic and other commitments taking more time these days, so my ham radio time tends to be more limited, often while mobile. However, over the years, I've been active in many facets of the hobby. Some of the more memorable ones have been:

HF (with a preference towards ragchewing and remote area operation to DX)

Mobile and portable, especially mobile on public transport.

    Satellites

Packet radio (am about to put a packet system back on air with IP and all)

    Digital voice (HF and VHF/UHF)

Contesting (had some success, but not my thing)

Foxhunting (now there's a lot of fun!)

ARDF, which for me is the real definition of "radio sport". :) I had success up to Region level here, winning 2 team gold and individual bronze at the 2003 R3 ARDF Championships. :)

    So, that's a bit of me. :)

Are you building something with a Raspberry Pi? I'd like to make a packet BBS with a Pi, but I don't really have a clue where to begin.

Yep. I've got IP tunneling working, so the Pi is on 44net. Next step is to order a TNC-Pi and setup the RF side. I'm looking at using LinBPQ for much of the packet side. I used to run G8BPQ on DOS years ago.

I look forward to building mine. I just don't know how all the software works together. I think there is a Pi image you can download that has most of the hard work already done and you simply do some config and add the TNC-Pi.

Yeah I'm muddling along as I go. :-) Using an image is not an option for me, as I'm building on top of existing systems. Lots of learning on the fly. :-) Certainly looking forward to having the system on air. Will also have to run something in the car, so I can access my own gateway while mobile. I'll run IP in the car, might even look at routing a subnet over packet. :) I have a /24 to play with and ATM, am the only user, though I do want to offer service to locals.

For those who don't know me, I'm Daryl Stout, originally from
the Miami, Florida area...but have lived in Little Rock, Arkansas
since August, 1977...when my late father's job transferred him
and the family to central Arkansas.

I'm only the second (and probably last) ham radio operator in my
family. My late uncle (my Mom's late brother), K3VRM, knew I had
got my license (No Code Technician) in 1991...but he became a
Silent Key in 1993. So, he didn't live to see me use Ham Test
Online to upgrade from Technician to General in 14 days, and
General to Amateur Extra 13 days later, in the summer of 2007,
with Ham Test Online. I upgraded not so much to work on HF, but
to be a Volunteer Examiner in the central Arkansas area. Awhile
back, they were literally "begging and pleading for VE's" in
the area. I've done nearly 170 exam sessions since becoming
    accredited in October, 2007.

I was originally licensed as N5VLZ in 1991, then changed to
AE5WX in summer, 2009, then to WX1DER in late 2012. The current
callsign (which is a keeper) was the name of a series of weather
features I did in college, called "A Weather Wonder" -- because
we analyze data, forecasts, and text...but wonder what weather
    will happen next.

I originally was running VHF; but with a move to an apartment
complex before I got married in 2003, because of antenna
prohibitions, I now operate Packet Via Telnet, Echolink,
    D-Star, D-Rats, and use Winlink 2000. I run or check into a
traffic net on a nightly basis, and do 2 license exam sessions
per month in the central Arkansas area. More info is in my bio
    on QRZ.

As for BBSing, I started logging onto a BBS run by the local
college, the University Of Arkansas At Little Rock (UALR), but
that BBS is long gone. I started my own BBS on a Radio Shack
32K Model 100 laptop, and still have the files for it in the
files are on my BBS, The Thunderbolt BBS...although I no longer
have the Model 100. The BBS is the longest running BBS in
Arkansas...all the others have long since gone offline. A new
Synchronet BBS came online in Little Rock recently, so I'm no
longer the only BBS in Arkansas.

I met my late wife (who passed away 3 weeks shy of our 4th
wedding anniversary) on the UALR BBS...and she eventually
became Co-Sysop. We competed against each other fiercely in
the games...she was a great winner, but she sure was a sore
    loser. <G>

She was studying for her ham radio license at the time of her
death, but wasn't too keen in getting on the air on phone. I
told her that "just use the digital modes...let your computer
do all the work for you".

Weather and Ham Radio are the main themes of the BBS, but I
    have other material as well.

Unfortunately, with problems with the FIDONet Tosser with
Virtual Advanced software, I am getting most of my message
networks via QWK Networking, and only the FIDONet Region 19
Sysops echo via FTN (I am available via FIDONet Netmail). So,
I appreciate Tony, VK3JED, setting this up for me.
