• LimeSDR enclosure

From Richard Menedetter@432:1/105 to All on Sun Sep 11 14:14:00 2016
    Hi All!

As you know I preordered a LimeSDR board.
They also had packets with enclosures, but they had completely prohibitive pricing ...

But I found a very creative workaround for this problem:

You can buy premade enclosures for VERY cheap.
Problem is that they have metal fronts and backs, where it is hard to make the necessary holes and fixings for the antennas and plugs.

So a guy had a very creative idea!
He used a PCB for that.
It is just a huge groundplane with the necessary holes.

I think that it will do the job (EMI will be worse than with thick metal ... but hey ... it was VERY cheap and still more than good enough for me)

Given that the skin effect is significant at high frequencies, and the copper of the PCB is a better conductor than most metals used in enclosures, you might be surprised. Only one way to find out. :-)

I think all other factors will have more influence :)
Indeed only one way to find out.

Yep, definitely worth a try. And it wouldn't be the first time I've seen PCB material used as a shield.

    Cool. :)

I see. :) I haven't looked at setting these up yet.

I came across also only recently.
But I need to stop my shopping spree ;)
I will try to do something similar with my rtl-sdr v3 dongle ...
As the software seems to be open source ...

    Let's see what happens.
