• New Retro Resource

From mjkerpan@80:774/22 to All on Fri Oct 13 23:51:56 2017
I'm working on setting up what I hope will be a unique resource for retro computer users: a Gopher server loaded up with the best software and info
for those machines that I can get my hands on. I've already started to
gather software and info for IBM compatible systems and suggestions for
what to add next are always welcome. I'm particualrly interested in adding tools for accessing Telnet BBSes on older systems and on putting together
a list of cool boards that have something special to offer retro system
    users.

Check it out at retrostar.bbs.io:70 The server speaks both native Gopher
and HTTP, so it should be simple to connect. Feedback and suggestions
    are VERY welcome.

Very cool! This is quite relevant to my interests ;) I plan on creating a in-BBS Gopher browser for ENiGMA 1/2 in the near future -- I'd love to hook this up. Also, I've been working on building a huge retro archive over on Xibalba BBS. Please feel free to come snag stuff (it's approx 150 GB and growing quickly with at least another 200 GB that I simply need to import). ...lots of retro programming / hardware books, mags (computers/gaming), utilities, DOS games, etc. The whole point is to get this stuff in a position it doesn't disappear forever, so def snag some and host it on Gopher as well!

...I shall log into your Gopher in just a moment after reading messages.

Writing back through my account on Xibalba, just because... Anyway, the main focus of my Gopher is going to be preserving the freeware and shareware that is
of use/interest and is even less well-preserved than a lot of commercial stuff. One area I'm especially interested in is software that started out as commercial software or shareware but as been released as freeware since. The authors of such programs made a valuable gift by doing so, but more and more of
this stuff is just quietly disappearing as websites go dark.

I do plan on raiding your archives, though, even if a lot of it won't fit on my
    Gopher.

Good idea ... will revisit when there is some content there.

Setup a link to it from my Xperimental sections on Mystic Pi BBS under G for Gopher. On Mystic I used DD ./dogopher
    Where dogopher is:
    set $TERM=vt100
    export TERM
    /usr/bin/gopher retrostar.bbs.io

To load gopher I used: sudo apt-get install gopher
Remember the last color in the menu will be the one used so it should be a light color. I doubt that will allow download through it, it will likely download to my BBS. I'll have to see about setting up for that as well. I
have a files/temp that's totally open, I'll see about trying to put it there.
