    Syzygy
The nearly straight-line configuration that occurs twice a month, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction (on the same side of Earth at the new Moon)
and when they are in opposition (on opposite sides of Earth at the full Moon). In both cases, the gravitational effects of the Sun and the Moon reinforce
each other, and tidal range is increased.

    Halcyon Days
About 14 days of calm weather follows the blustery winds of autumn's end. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed them to occur around the time of the winter solstice, when the halcyon, or kingfisher, was brooding. In a nest floating on the sea, the bird was said to have charmed the wind and waves so that the waters were especially calm during this period.

    Cat Nights
This term harks back to the days when people believed in witches. An old Irish legend says that a witch could turn into a cat and regain herself eight times, but on the ninth time, August 17, she couldn't change back, hence the saying: "A cat has nine lives." Because August is a "yowly" time for cats, this may have prompted the speculation about witches on the prowl in the first place.

    Dog Days
These are the hottest and most unhealthy days of the year. Also known as Canicular Days, the name derives from the Dog Star, Sirius. The traditional timing of Dog Days is the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, coinciding with the heliacal (at sunrise) rising of Sirius.

    Midsummer Day
June 24. Although it occurs near the summer solstice, to the farmer this day
is the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvest
and an occasion for festivity. The English church considered it a "Quarter Day," one of the four major divisions of the liturgical year. It also marks
the feast day of St. John the Baptist.

    Three Chilly Saints
Mamertus, Pancras, and Gervais were three early Christian saints. Because
their feast days, on May 11, 12, and 13, respectively, are traditionally cold, they have come to be known as the Three Chilly Saints. An old French saying goes: "St. Mamertus, St. Pancras, and St. Gervais do not pass without
    a frost."

    Plough Monday
The first Monday after Epiphany and Plough Sunday was so called because it was the day that men returned to their plough, or daily work, at the end of the Christmas holiday. It was customary for farm laborers to draw a plough through the village, soliciting money for a "plough-light," which was kept burning in the parish church all year. In some areas, the custom of blessing the plough
    is maintained.

The nearly straight-line configuration that occurs twice a month, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction (on the same side of Earth at the new Moon)

    SOS
The letters signified by the signal ( ... - ... ) prescribed by the Internation Radiotelegraphic Convention of 1908 for use by ships in distress. SOS was chosen as the universal distress signal because this combination of three dots followed by three dashes followed by three dots (...-...), was easy to send and easily recognized, especially since they were usually sent as a nine-character signal, which stood out against the background of three-character Morse Code letters. The letters themselves are meaningless. SOS does not stand for Save Our Souls, Save Our Ship, Stop Other Signals, or Sure Of Sinking.

    The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's intensity. It is used to estimate a hurricane's potential impact on coastal areas, including property damage and flooding. Wind speed, measured using a 1- minute average, is the determining factor in the scale.
Category 1: wind speeds 74-95 mph
Category 2: wind speeds 96-110 mph
Category 3: wind speeds 111-130 mph
Category 4: wind speeds 131-155 mph

    Rainbow
Rainbows are formed opposite to the sun by the refraction and reflection of
the sun's rays in drops of falling rain. The raindrops are responsible for the colors of rainbows. They break the sunlight up into the full spectrum of colors, each drop acting as a sort of miniature prism. Each color emerges at a slightly different angle on each raindrop. When millions of raindrops gather, the spectrum shows up as distinct bands of color -- each with a different length. Red is the longest and violet the shortest band. The arc is most pronounced when the Sun is close to the horizon.

    Mammatus Cloud
Sinking air in thunderstorms can form sack-like clouds known as mammatus, or mammo, clouds. They look ominous but are actually a sign that a thunderstorm
is weakening. These clouds look like upside down pans of biscuits or a
    cow's udder.

    Hail
Hail falls mainly in the summer. It forms in thunderstorm clouds, which can extend high into the atmoshpere where extremely cold temperatures prevail.
When a cloud releases rain, the rain can be forced upward, where it freezes into tiny ice pellets. If updrafts keep buffeting the pellets, layer upon
layer of frozen water will be added to the pellets until, finally, hailstones are released.

    Lenticular Cloud
Lenticular clouds are only seen around mountains. These strange clouds are
easy to spot, because they look like flying saucers or a stack of pancakes. Their most interesting characteristic is that they don't move. Winds blow
right through them, while other clouds are swept away.

    Sleet
Sleet falls in the winter when the air temperature is below freezing near the ground and above freezing up in the clouds. Rain forms in the warm air and falls into the cold air, freezing into little pieces of ice on the way down.
