• Setting up RG v1.30

From Alpha@25:25/0 to All on Wed Jul 27 16:09:38 2022
Made my way back to RG with the v1.30DOS release, I have to say, it's better than i remember. Working on the BBS now, but had a few Q's I hope some seasoned sysops could weigh in on!

    - I'm running Win7-32, NET2BBS. I attempted a Ubuntu + Dosbox setup, but found that just running old Windows on an old machine was a lot easier. Anyone run RG w/dosemu2? just curious if I should keep prodding on linux.

    - I'm using Binkd and GEcho. Back in the day, I ran Front Door and FastEcho (I think?). I'm used to binkd because of linux side, but seems so... inelegant compared to the old DOs GUIs and WFC screens. Anyone have a favorate mailer/tosser setup w/RG?

    - Speaking of scanning/tossing... I'm having trouble triggering an echomail scan with RENEMAIL after logged out locally (/L) on RG. Works fine when 'calling' through NET2BBS. My local BAT file looks like this, but seems like the error level isn't being set or something?

    RG-LOCAL.BAT
    ---------
    :START

    CD\RENEGADE
    c:\RENEGADE\renegade.exe /L
    if errorlevel 255 goto QUIT
    if errorlevel 2 goto OUTMAIL

    GOTO QUIT

    :OUTMAIL
    c:
    CD \RENEGADE
    RENEMAIL -S
    CD \GECHO
    GECHO SCAN
    CD \RENEGADE
    RENEMAIL -P
    GOTO QUIT

    :QUIT
    -----

It's just so much easier to do a FAST LOCAL login, not sure what I'm missing.

Cheers, and great to be 'home' again with Renegade!

Renegade is a DOS program. It was written in DOS, for DOS.

It was never designed to run on an emulator or anything non-Microsoft...

I want to figure out a DOS VM that I can run RG on; FreeDOS maybe...

    Why that and not MS-DOS?

I'm running Windows 7 w/RG and it's pretty seamless. And you get all the benefit of the comms stack/telnet or whatever, without having to run extra software. There are some good YT vids out there around DOS setups w/telnet,
    I remember.

Finally got everything working today, ended up with Binkd + HPT. Like butter.

I didn't realize that one could run on Arca, either... hmmmm. Second, to answer Atreyu and you, I guess I didn't think to simply run DOS 6.22... I just grabbed the 'new' FreeDOS and went a r0llin... thx for the replies.

Thanks, aLPHA. You'd laugh if you saw my PVE dashboard... I have so many systems setup just ... because - I think I have a Win7 ready for customizing, too.

Just need SIO to run on Arca, or OS/2 for that matter.
