Just been poking around some boards. And you know what I came to realize?!?! I CANNOT STAND Synchronet's or WildCats! file listing. Who in their damn mind thought it was a cool idea to make the list show only ONE friggin LINE of a description. Atleast on WildCat! I can fix this issue, but on Synch .... NOPE ... almost every Synch board I call and view files, it's always stupid ONE LINE descrptions and you have to view each description ONE by ONE .... argh! End of rant. ;)

I just found after time that Diz's got used and abused; was never a fan of anyone putting stupid pipe-codes or Ansi/high-Ascii etc in them. But by then I largely stopped caring about the file collection. My board was getting slammed right at midnight from people calling for Lord/Tradewars. When I wasn't overseeing the fun abuse of that I was into messaging and the multi-node chatter at 3am, when I had to write some stupid math exam at 9am that morning.

I get that it has its "following"... err well maybe not so much anymore.

I think the last big wildcrap-board was Docs Place. The one that
surprisingly had a good rank on Google and had the wildcrap web interface, which apparently is still an expensive add-on still sold today... still looks and smells like 1995.

That place finally shut down awhile ago I think... doubt theres any

Ahhh... well I agree w/ you about Sync - do they even have long filename support yet? RG had it right all those years ago, with Batch and listings that didn't get in the way. I particularly like Mystic more current lightbar approach and its powerful archive viewer...

But I have to say I disagree about Wildcat!... whil it, too, can be a very stock-boring software, the sysOps who create something unique with it change it up enough that it can be cool - and I think its file system is bearable.

I was just about to point out the same thing. I have my SBBS board configured with extended descriptions enabled for everyone by default.

What SBBS does lack, however, is a nicer way of browsing and paging through the file lists; it only seems to page forward but not back. There are a few mods out there for enhanced listing, but the ones I tried seemed kinda buggy so I ended up sticking with the stock file list.

That is the case with both messages and files. You can go forward but not
back although you can always re-read.

I think nightfox has a full screen reader for the message areas and you can page up or down when reading messages. He wrote something like that for file areas too but I have never had a look at it so I'm not sure if that would
    look backwards.

I actually need to correct what I stated earlier regarding the file lister... The stock file lister does in fact have a [P] previous option at the top. I just completely overlooked it.

Yes, I believe you're referring to DDMsgReader. I personally prefer Synchronet's own optional message list module (msglist.js). It's great for listing and sorting pages of messages, and even gives a nice message preview pane.

i think wildcat and synchronet's file systems are great. renegade is the
one with the fucked filebases. man, i miss filedude.

i'm not a fan of how you search and read msgs on wildcat.

regarding synchronet, it's pretty straight forward. there's also a lot of search options.

back in the day i ran rg and then iniquity, and i had to switch to synchronet because i needed something stable. i was using old netmodem and that thing was total shit.

i got used to synchronet and i saw how you could make what you wanted. it didnt matter that the developer was a totally different type of bbs guy. i could take it and make it what i wanted. he didnt even know what a oneliners wall was when he called my bbs. when deuce called my bbs it blew his mind too.

Yeah I cracked open a file and found your README.N0W from way back and seen some pretty creative stuff in there. mix of ascii art and some easy to follow instructions. Then I closed that and found WARNING.TXT and that had some pretty cool stuff to keep someone that wasn't about to read the manual from messing up the entire install.
