• The smoke got let out

From Barry Martin@454:1/1 to All on Thu Jul 29 07:59:00 2021

    Hi Folks!

Yup, that's the ending: "smoke got let out". Good thing was not
    literally.

Have been having some strange issues around here (so what's new?!).
Have some security-ish cameras -- recordings get stored in the unit in
the basement, so through the Ethernet network. I also have a 10"
monitor up here at the computer desk so I can glance and see what's
going on; lately the streaming videos have been freezing, but mainly
when it's hot outside. The cameras are in the Storage Area (essentially
attic) looking through a window. Does get a bit toasty in there and
that also causes a few glitches on the recordings. Need to cool the
cameras some how but that's a different story.

Everything else on the network seems fine, and I use MythTV to
distribute up to 1080p recorded shows.

Yesterday morning started working on a little project with a Raspberry Pi
(the one to create a separate testing network -- I think I put it in the Electronics conference a week ago). Suddenly my streaming music stops mid-song and something like a 'qrk error' pops up; mybe they went off-
line? Then I get pop-up messages telling me the cameras are off-line.
Those are internal as I created them. Oh-oh! Check the Ethernet Switch
-- three port LEDs glowing; should be more. Check the switch in the
basement -- that one is fine.

Power boot the first Ethernet switch; now no port LEDs but I do have one indicating the power to it is on.

Swap in a couple of spare switches -- keep the old stuff if it works!
(Used two because of the number of cables.) I get myself back on-line.
    :)

Last night opened the failed Ethernet switch just for fun -- combination
of see what's inside and maybe repair or maybe snag a few parts (I do
some electronics hobbyist stuff.) Did find the problem: two
electrolytic capacitors have a noticeable bulge. Brand is Acon, and
yes, they're on the list of manufacturers who had a manufacturing
problem years ago. "Interestingly" the failed cap's are on the load
side of a small power transformer while the those on the line side look
    fine.

So with the patched system the live stream videos from the cameras are
back to normal. Have the heat issue still but that's something
different. The 'external accesses' are perkier -- before an ever-so-
slight sluggishness had crept in. Still seems a little odd the one
system for monitoring the live stream was the only one showing a
problem, and didn't show a problem with packet errors.

Yeouch. Yeah, failing capacitors cause all manner of weird glitches.

Couple years ago my old switch failed (it just ceased talking to
anything, and went from unpleasantly warm to HOT) and I had to replace
it. Settled on the TP-Link TL-SG108, 8 port gigabit switch (at the time
about $22), bought from their official eBay store, cuz it was handy.

In fact I liked the first one so much that I promptly bought two more
(so far!) and left 'em a glowing review. Literally plug in anything any
which way (auto port sensing so doesn't matter if you use regular or
crossover cables, nor which cable goes to the router), plug in the
rather generic wall-wart, and it Just Works. Metal body, compact, and generates only a tiny fraction as much heat as the old switch; in fact
despite that it's fanless, I have yet to notice either of the two in
everyday use getting warm at all, even when busy. I gather this is
because any port that's not in use goes into sleep mode. Doesn't use
enough power to register on the UPS.

Can also be daisy-chained, as I did initially before rearranging what's
    stuck to the router.

Your attic needs an exhaust fan; that would help a lot. And bad caps can
do stuff like make stuff sluggish rather than failing entirely. (Eg.
slow or spotty USB access = bad caps on the southbridge circuit. And I
think I just had one such that's on its way out sort of randomly
scramble a directory when I did a normal file save... part vanished,
part reappeared somewhere else entirely, replacing another directory of
the same name, but without deleting anything... no files to recover...
Well, we won't be trusting THAT system anymore...)

And part of the function of a electrolytic capacitor is to remove AC
ripples and line noise, not create it.

all, even when busy. I gather this is because any port that's not
in use goes into sleep mode. Doesn't use enough power to register
    on the UPS.

The old one hardly generated any sort of warmth either and AFAIK
didn't heat up after the failure either -- 'course the failure in the
power supply could have fried the switch part and so nothing to create
heat! (It looked unharmed; doesn't take much to open junctions.)

Can also be daisy-chained, as I did initially before rearranging
    what's stuck to the router.

Right: the old ones had a specific port for input, and some a mechanical
switch to turn on and off the function.

So with the patched system the live stream videos from the cameras are
back to normal. Have the heat issue still but that's something
different. The 'external accesses' are perkier -- before an ever-so-
slight sluggishness had crept in. Still seems a little odd the one

problem, and didn't show a problem with packet errors.
Your attic needs an exhaust fan; that would help a lot.

I get voted down on that option. ...And I'm not recalling seeing any
house with a fan, not that I'm actively looking and not the fan is on
the other side. The 'thing' around here, and what we have, is ridge
venting plus roof vents. Also a lighter-coloured shingle.

    And bad
caps can do stuff like make stuff sluggish rather than failing
entirely. (Eg. slow or spotty USB access = bad caps on the
    southbridge circuit.

Right: one of the first things I thought of when everything returned to
normal was the failed capacitors in the Ethernet Switch are acting like
    a failing Southbridge circuit.

And I think I just had one such that's on
its way out sort of randomly scramble a directory when I did a
normal file save... part vanished, part reappeared somewhere else entirely, replacing another directory of the same name, but
without deleting anything... no files to recover... Well, we
won't be trusting THAT system anymore...)

Or at least the motherboard part! I could sort of see the scrambling
and re-arranging: I think directory names (along with everything else)
are just a 'translation' of the ones and zereos: the 14th entry is 1110
and there's a table somewhere to say #14 = Pictures. Flip a binary
digit to 1010 and now it's in #10 so in some other directory. (Super-
simplied but close-enough to get the concept across.)

How's that for being original?? <G> And, apparently it happened

    up the crap...literally.

And part of the function of a electrolytic capacitor is to remove AC ripples and line noise, not create it.

Speaking of capacitors, the air conditioner guy had to replace that in
the central air unit here, and add refrigerant...cost me $245. But, at
least it's comfortable in here, compared to what it is outside.

Some other components need a heat-sink (not sure how that's spelled) to dispel the excess temperature.

As for the capacitor replacement, a very common job. And possibly a
good thing it failed as then your refrigerant was refilled and probably
makes your system mmore efficient, so saving you the money you spent on
    the repair (eventually).

Pfft! If the Society even find out what I did! A couple/few weeks ago I
had accidentally snapped off one of the folding keyboard legs to the
keyboard on this computer (got caught on the mousepad) so swapped out
with another keyboard I had in stock. The keyboard with the broken leg
has been kept and used with a Raspberry Pi project.

So back to the replacement keyboard. Cheap feel, some of the keys
wobble. I've no idea where it came from but probably a freebie add-on
when I had purchased a replenished computer some time back.
Occasionally had issues with whatever I was working on doing weird
things like the document window getting larger/smaller, etc. Turned out
the left CTRL key was getting stuck, so the weirdness was due to
CTRL_<key> commands. Took the back off the keyboard; key 'springs' were
little greenish mushroom-looking things about 1/8th inch -- no wonder the
keys wobbled and had a bad feel! Wiggled where the USB cord was
soldered to the p.c. board; board to electronics recycle, USB cord to
the little box where I keep the others. Occasionally find the 5v power
is handy, haven't done anything with the data leads yet.

through Iowa and continued into Illinois. Lost power for five days. Fortunately no damage to the house. This afternoon they're forecasting
high's in the mid-90's, heat index 105-110ø, and probably storms late afternoon and evening.

Sort of reminds me of when I blew a UPS when testing a computer I was building: puch the power button, BAM!. Was years ago when the Power switch actually directly switched the power on and off. Found out they had wired the switch wrong, so pushing the switch caused a short (!).
Did you have to get a new UPS??

Yup! I don't think the original (blown) one had a fuse/circuit
protection of any sort (and it wasn't a small nor cheap one). Remember
the poor thing was weakly beeping as if the AC power had failed, which confused me -- did I blow a breaker? Knew something else was wrong
because of seeing a flash inside the switch (computer's side panel was
off). Wasn't sure about the power as there are two circuits up here --
not drawing tons of power, just the way the wiring is. Plus had at
least one other UPS up here so some devices would be running....

    So there's a non-offensive cruelty?
    Could be.

    Hmmm: G-rated.....

I did but not sure if it was understandable.
