    Barry,

I hope you have unplugged them: though 'off' they are on a bit, mainly monitoring if the remote control gets pressed. Also take the batteries out of the remote so won't leak and damage.

I can't get to where the plugs are...and the remotes are well out of
reach. I'm the only one here, so there's no danger of my turning them
    on.

Hmmm...I may need to rephrase that. <G>

But, I guess this tagline is appropriate:

"When I get naked in the bathroom, the shower gets turned on".

That also reminds me of an incident several years ago. I was talking
to a fellow BBS Sysop and ham radio operator on the phone one evening.
He was about 2 miles from me...he has since moved to Tennessee with his family, and no longer does either BBSing or ham radio.

Anyway, we could stay things on the phone (werty derds <G>) that we
couldn't say on ham radio. I was watching the late evening newscast, but
all I wanted was a weather update (unless there's a new story, the late
news is a re-hash of the early evening news).

So, I had the volume on the TV set turned down. When I saw it was time
for the weather segment, with the male meteorologist (there are a few
female meteorologists out there), I said "It's time for the weather...let
    me turn him on".

With that, my friend was laughing hysterically, and I said "Let me
rephrase that!!"...to which, he replied "Too late, you pervert!!" <G>.

So since want to stick around one good reason to take away the
    flammable stuff. <gg>

Speaking of "a hot time in the old town tonight", one couple was
getting frisky, but the woman had both Vicks Vapo-Rub and Ky-Jelly
on the dresser next to the bed. In the dark, she grabbed the wrong
one, and you can guess the result. :P

Or "The Rule of Self-Preservation". I kind of go by 'the rule of the lesser evil': nothing we do is all good: there is always so bad aspect,
so try to do the best and minimize the worst.

They also call it "Survival Of The Fittest". They want to get rid of
all the elderly and disabled folks, not accepting or realizing that they
too, will be in that boat one day...perhaps sooner than they think, as
one's health can change in the blink of an eye...as in "they dropped
    dead".

That reminds me of the blooper that noted "We're sad to report the
untimely death of John Doe. It was truly a turning point in his life".

And, here are a couple more that fall into the "What Was Your First
    Clue??" category:

    1) The fire chief said that something hot came in contact with something flammable, and that started the fire in the church kitchen.

    2) The pastor said that all eating disorders are related to food.

Maybe you need some hemorrhoidal oinkment now. <G>

Hmm: maybe I can use the box for cleaning!

"We're going to make them squeal!!" <G>

It was the right thinking at the time! ...Wonder if that statement and time attribute is correct? My DEC Rainbow 100 (purchased ~1980 as a birthday present to myself) had the option to go up to 896 KB -- stick those little black Chicklets in the expansion board.

    I remember those RAM sticks.

Nope: that's definitely not going to be a turn-on!

Speaking of inaccessible outlets, it's almost seems like they're placed
in the most inconvenient spot possible: "two more inches to the left and
would have where I needed it!". I've get a few with a heavy-duty power
strip or 'air conditioner' extension cord plugged in to the outlet
before putting the furniture in front. The extensions are rated at
least 13A and usually have right-angle plugs to keep flush to the wall.
(Pay attention to the orientation of the outlet holes.) ...And no,

The outlet placement is a combination of legalities (can't have an
outlet at the top of the stairs so the cord of whatever is plugged in to
it crosses and presents a trip hazard; otherwise spacing every six feet
IIRC) and convenience: architect thinks a table with lamp would be

I saw a video on where Brightline, a private carrier, is adding passenger rail service for the Florida East Coast Railroad, which last ran passenger trains in 1967. Currently, they run only from Miami to West Palm Beach, but track was recently completed at a westward turn at Cocoa, to head to the Orlando International Airport. At one of the grade crossings, where they

in it, and of course can't simply be sliced and stuck in a junction box underground.

    Barry,

More likely the bulb is burned out. :P

Hmm: I can relate to that!

That means you don't have any new ideas coming to you. <g,d,r>

Well if that's the only thing needing to be moved not a bad job of planning! OTOH the signal box probably has a ton of wiring and
controls in it, and of course can't simply be sliced and stuck in a junction box underground.

The signal box was there when the line was single tracked. They are
making it double tracked from Miami to Cocoa, where it then heads west
to the Orlando, International Airport. All the track and signals are in
place, but they need to do some final things on the embankments and the
tracks, before the test trains can start running on it, before they start
    the actual service.

From what I understand, one will be able to go from Miami to Orlando
in just over 3 hours. The stops are at Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca
Raton, and the Orlando International Airport. I'm not sure if there will
be any others. It will take a bunch of traffic off of Interstate 4, and Interstate 95.

From Miami to West Palm Beach, the max speed is 79 mph, the same as
the Amtrak trains around the country. From West Palm Beach to Cocoa, in
some spots, the max speed will be 110 mph...and from Cocoa to the Orlando International Airport, the max speed will be 125 mph...mainly because
from Cocoa to the Orlando International Airport, there are no highway
grade crossings. The route may eventually be extended to Tampa.

I don't know when the actual revenue service from the Orlando
International Airport and West Palm Beach will start...it already
runs between West Palm Beach and downtown Miami. They have built an interchange connection track with the South Florida Rail Corridor and
the Florida East Coast Railroad (FEC) (which Brightline is using), to
where Tri-Rail trains (that run on the former Seaboard Coast Line (SCL)
route) from Mangonia Park (just north of West Palm Beach to the Miami
Airport Station, just east of the Miami International Airport), can
switch to the FEC at the "diamond" crossing known as "Iris". You can
view videos of the Brightline Trains, construction on the line, on
YouTube by searching for "Roaming Railfan Brightline".

The original Miami Amtrak station in the Allapattah section of town,
was razed in 1978. Some pictures from "The Miami Herald" from the depot,
and trains around the area are at:

    https://flashbackmiami.com/2015/06/03/seaboard-railroad/

The current Miami Amtrak station is in CSX Railroad's Hialeah Yard,
next to Tri-Rail's maintenance facility. There was talk of moving the
Miami Amtrak Station to the Miami Airport Station, where both Amtrak
and Tri-Rail would share trackage, but I don't know what the progress
on that is. With the current Miami Amtrak Station, there's a loop track,
where the train can basically get turned around...it's the southern most
point on the route for Amtrak's Silver Meteor and Silver Star.

Just south of the Hialeah Market station for Tri-Rail (the original
Hialeah depot), the line splits into two sections. The first one was
what the original Amtrak station was on (it was a stub end terminal,
    like at Tampa Union Station...basically a dead-end -- you can't go out
the other end, but have to go out the same way you came in). The second
one is the CSX Homestead Subdivision, that heads past the southwest point
of Miami International Airport (at the Oleander Interchange, which is
now the far southwest point of the FEC), and the Gold Coast Railroad
Museum, built on the site of the former Richmond Naval Air Station.

However, there is no Y at the point to go to the CSX Homestead
Subdivison, and to the Tri-Rail Miami Airport Station. So, they may end
up doing the same thing as is done at Tampa's Union Station. Basically,
before the trains get to Tampa, at the Neve Wye, on what was the one
time Fanotasassa Subdivision, they basically Y the train, and back it
into Tampa Union Station. You can watch it on YouTube at:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMZm4iG1v3g

At the Tri-Rail Transfer Station, you can switch to the Metro Rail,
to get to southwest Miami and the Dadeland Shopping Center (other
places on that route are Downtown Miami, the Vizcaya Botannical
Gardens, and the University Of Miami campus), or to Palmetto, and a
station at the south end of the former Hialeah Park Horse Race Track.

I didn't know I was going to give a description of south Florida
    railroads!!

    Hi Daryl!

More likely the bulb is burned out. :P
Hmm: I can relate to that!
That means you don't have any new ideas coming to you. <g,d,r>

Oh I sometimes have a lot coming out of me!

Well if that's the only thing needing to be moved not a bad job of planning! OTOH the signal box probably has a ton of wiring and
controls in it, and of course can't simply be sliced and stuck in a junction box underground.
The signal box was there when the line was single tracked. They
are making it double tracked from Miami to Cocoa, where it then
heads west to the Orlando, International Airport. All the track
and signals are in place, but they need to do some final things
on the embankments and the tracks, before the test trains can
start running on it, before they start the actual service.

    Just the usual last-minute details.

From what I understand, one will be able to go from Miami to
Orlando in just over 3 hours. The stops are at Aventura, Fort
Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and the Orlando International Airport.
I'm not sure if there will be any others. It will take a bunch of
traffic off of Interstate 4, and Interstate 95.

That's good! Hope people use it: the 'big problem' is people usually
want their car with them so they can gom someplacxe once they get to the destination. Doesn't seem so much of a problem when flying but ground- mode....

From Miami to West Palm Beach, the max speed is 79 mph, the
same as the Amtrak trains around the country. From West Palm
Beach to Cocoa, in some spots, the max speed will be 110
mph...and from Cocoa to the Orlando International Airport, the
max speed will be 125 mph...mainly because from Cocoa to the
Orlando International Airport, there are no highway grade
crossings. The route may eventually be extended to Tampa.

Glad they're already considering expansion: makes that expansion easier
    to integrate.

    With the current Miami Amtrak
Station, there's a loop track, where the train can basically get
turned around...it's the southern most point on the route for
Amtrak's Silver Meteor and Silver Star.

Can't do a simple three-point turn like one does wiht a car! <g>

I didn't know I was going to give a description of south

container and the cardboard pieces fly off in the wind -- usually just

If they are too large, they get stuck in there. The trash and recycle
trucks have a "claw" that grabs the container, and lifts it up into the
truck to empty it...then they set it back down on the ground. Sometimes,
they do it so haphazardly, that it ends up being tipped over. They want
to do the same job, with less people.

Along that line, with all the mess with the 2 derailments from Norfolk Southern (first in Ohio, then in Michigan), this is going to revive the
call to put extra crew on the train, to watch for things like smoking or flaming wheels (hotbox) as the train goes down the track (they did that
years ago, before getting rid of the cabooses).

Apparently, one of the defect detectors failed, and the dispatchers
didn't notify the crew. The lawsuit attorneys already smell blood in the water, and I'm sure heads are going to roll. People and animals are dying
from health related issues, and there's "a chemical rainbow" in the water.

The thing is, many hazardous materials and chemicals can only be shipped
by rail. If you think our economy is bad now, stop all the shipments of ethanol, gasoline, LP gas, and related hazardous materials...and watch the price of everything skyrocket. The wacky environmentalists want to ban the
LP gas stoves, and anything powered on gasoline. Yet, the electric cars
are catching fire (many ferries have banned them from being on board), and
an EMP will crash the power grid.

Their goal is like Satan's...he wants to destroy all human life on the planet...and according to Scripture, he will nearly do it.

I saw something about that. The Iowa-Interstate Railroad is along the
former Rock Island line, and they are restoring several items recently
donated by the Union Pacific Railroad, including the Challenger 3985 steam locomotive.

Right: same method here. We've gone through two trash carts: if the
mechanism is set too fast when the cart is set down it doesn't quite
have time to balance and can tip over. Occasionally into the street and
then every so often the truck runs over. ...It's 'horrifyingly funny' to
watch the video: poor innocent trash can falls over and flails as it
meets its demise. Meanwhile the truck hasn't a clue and just keeps
    going.

Along that line, with all the mess with the 2 derailments from

I didn't hear anything (or at least don't recall hearing) about the
failed detector. Probably will get a new law requiring redundancy,
which on the surface sounds twice as safe but they would need to have a
system notification of when the first detector failed -- and obviously
they don't have that -- else same issue when the second detector fails.

The news has 'mentioned' the dead fish, chemical rainbows when sturring
up the water, and s/s of headaches and rashes; tests coming back normal.
I don't doubt the tests are normal as a little bit of pathogen can be tolerated; it's when a little bit of Pathogen_1 gets mixed with a tiny
bit of Pathogen_2 they're not testing for.

The thing is, many hazardous materials and chemicals can only

The problem is everything is bad; we need to take steps to minimize the
bad. Might be as simple as slowing down: I don 't recall if the cause
of the OH derailment was stated but perhaps slowing down from 90 MPH to
75 MPH would have reduced the accident. Probably still would have had
the derailment but perhaps not as badly damaging the cars, thus better retaining their integrity and maybe not leaking, or not leaking as much.

Their goal is like Satan's...he wants to destroy all human life
on the planet...and according to Scripture, he will nearly do it.

    "I vow to do better!"

As for wx, yesterday we had a severe storm warning which locally
fizzled: only 3 to 4 inches. Iowa City (about an hour's drive west)
    got 10 to 12 inches.
We have a risk of severe weather twice this week...Wednesday
and Saturday. So, that means more downtime.

The updated forecast for up here is now a possible ice storm on
Wednesday, or Wednesday into Thursday' all depends on how fast moves,
whether shifts north or south, if that little butterfly in South
    Africa..... <g>

    Plus the Uber/Lyft drivers won't accept! <g>
That's why if I'm getting something, it's very small, like I
can put in a small bag, like getting an ink cartridge for the
    printer.

    Ah-HA! Smuggling!!

laments "Maybe we should call an Uber". :P
    Well they are getting old!
    Aren't we all??

    I'm ripening!

They've been talking of adding a spur (?) so Amtrak can stop at the
Quad Cities. Would either be Moline or Rock Island (IL) -- vaguely recalling the track was available to make the connection but don't
recall about the station. Probably easier to build the station than
    lay the track!
I saw something about that. The Iowa-Interstate Railroad is
along the former Rock Island line, and they are restoring several
items recently donated by the Union Pacific Railroad, including
    the Challenger 3985 steam locomotive.

You'll know more about it that I do (because it's your hobby).

I know: I ordered some USB batteries and big sticker on the box it contained batteries and 'forbidden on passenger flights'. (USB
batteries: rechargeable via a USB charger.)
The Lithium batteries are starting fires now. I remember Al
Lewis (who played Grandpa on The Munsters...I loved his laugh, as
well as Frank Gorshen, who played "The Riddler" on the Batman TV
Series), who did a commercial for the secret to long life --
    "lithium batteries".

I think all batteries can cause fires, even the 'dead' ones: they don't
have enough charge to do their job in a flashlight, remote control,
etc., but have the two terminals contact something to complete the
circuit and there's more than enough to heat up and potentially cause a
    fire.

You could open a big can of worms there. <G>
    Yummm! Family size!
That would give me gas and indigestion. But, if you can get the
worm and fish on and off the hook in record time, does that make
you a master baiter?? (yes, I did just go there) <bseg>.

Took that one hooker, line and stinker!

    Barry,

Right: same method here. We've gone through two trash carts: if the mechanism is set too fast when the cart is set down it doesn't quite
have time to balance and can tip over. Occasionally into the street
and then every so often the truck runs over. ...It's 'horrifyingly
funny' to watch the video: poor innocent trash can falls over and
flails as it meets its demise. Meanwhile the truck hasn't a clue and
    just keeps going.

I saw a video where this kid thought he could "kick a trash can that
wasn't right" into submission. Let's just say the kid got taught a hard
lesson. It's like the meme where this "daddy doggie" tells his puppy
son, as they observe a male dog about to heist his leg next to an
electric fence..."you're about to see a teachable moment". :P

I didn't hear anything (or at least don't recall hearing) about the
failed detector. Probably will get a new law requiring redundancy,
which on the surface sounds twice as safe but they would need to have a system notification of when the first detector failed -- and obviously they don't have that -- else same issue when the second detector fails.

There was a video on YouTube about that...apparently someone behind the scenes has become "a whistleblower"...no pun intended.

The news has 'mentioned' the dead fish, chemical rainbows when sturring
up the water, and s/s of headaches and rashes; tests coming back
normal. I don't doubt the tests are normal as a little bit of pathogen
can be tolerated; it's when a little bit of Pathogen_1 gets mixed with
a tiny bit of Pathogen_2 they're not testing for.

Many of the chemicals for things in our lives can only be transported
by rail. But, even with all the safeguards and precautions, "Murphy" tends
to get into things, and muck them up big time.

I saw where VIA Rail Canada added buffer cars on its passenger trains,
in case of a wreck, where there was sort of a shield between the cars and
the other "impacting device". Many ethanol and fuel trains carry a buffer
or idler car (usually an empty grain car) to protect the crew at the front
end of the consist, and for protection at the back end...even if there's a distributed power unit (DPU) locomotive there. A lot of trains now have
these DPU's at midtrain, to minimize slack action, and help with braking
The DPU's are remote controlled from the lead locomotive...but it makes
    for humongously long trains.

The updated forecast for up here is now a possible ice storm on
Wednesday, or Wednesday into Thursday' all depends on how fast moves, whether shifts north or south, if that little butterfly in South Africa..... <g>

risk of severe storms, mainly northwest of Little Rock.

    Ah-HA! Smuggling!!

I just hate sitting here all day, especially if I have to sit at
the front door, waiting for the delivery vehicle to show up. At least
when I order groceries, I select a 2 hour delivery window, which is
not as bad as having to sit here all day.

I guess they'll be calling for elimination of batteries next, along with
LP gas appliances, and gasoline vehicles. I saw where a lot of these electric cars are being banned from ferries, as they are catching fire.

    Barry,

Sometimes one just has to learn for oneself, though the latter example
I'd try to have avoided at all costs!

Too many people in life "have to learn the hard way". That includes ME,
in that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I tried to upgrade the BBS
software, and when it didn't work, I deleted the exec (main program file directory), thinking I had a backup directory available.

To my horror, I discovered I did not...and the 2 external USB drives
were no good...one failed, and the other wouldn't let me get the data.
Another issue was that several doors quit working...apparently the
DORINFO1.DEF file works better than the DOOR.SYS file.

I lost the CAPTCHA deal at logon, but one feature of Synchronet allows
me to set the inactivity timer for DUMB terminals (bots) to 15 seconds.
They usually get dropped, and instantly reconnect, but several at once
tie up the nodes. Yet, if they enter something like supervisor, admin,
root, sysop, etc., they get dropped, and the IP gets a temporary ban on
it, which I change to permanent once I see it in the control panel.

If everyone played nice things would be a heck of a lot better. One
side wants to make as much money as possible while the opposite side
wants to have the money or other luxury. (That phrasing isn't quite right.) A happier medium is someone reports a problem (or potential problem) and it's check out, and as necessary fixed. Seems like that would save alot of crises expenses later.

So many want to always have the latest and greatest stuff. I'm content
to use whatever still works, even if it's legacy. Years ago, items were
made with QUALITY...now, they just mix a bunch of crap together, and call
    it a working product.

"Poop occurs." A fire on a train or truck on the ground is less catastrophic than one in an airplane. OTOH some of the ground
    accidents have come close.

On your quote, it better...digestive tract poisoning is no fun. :P

A conflagration is deadly, unless used to keep warm or for cooking. I
don't want to be on a plane...as it plunges to the ground, it's the sudden
stop at the end that does you in. :P As one cartoon years ago noted "If
man were meant to fly, he would've been born with airline tickets". Or
like the product warning noting "Cape does not permit the user to fly".

I'm thinking I'd rather put up with the relatively brief inconvenience
of a long train than recovering from an explosion.

I would, too. But, only in America (and likely in other areas)...we
    race to:

    1) Beat the traffic lights to an intersection.
    2) Beat the trains to a railroad crossing.
    3) Beat the boats to a drawbridge.

But, we'll stand patiently for 3 hours on the golf course. Or as the
late Red Skelton asked "How can your wife see a yellow thread on your
suit jacket, and yet, miss the garage door??!!".

Locally the freezing rain, etc., were about 50 miles north. I got rain pretty much all day. The TV forecast for the 'northern counties' was
for a possibility of up to an inch of ice, along with the possibilty of downed tree limbs (ice build up plus was windy) and power outages.
Nothing like that here; LIS rained all day plus wind guts around 30
MPH. ...My little radar display was quite colourful!

Radarscope can look like Christmas Tree...especially the red and green
colors on the velocity display (red with winds in the storm moving away
from the radar, and green with winds in the storm moving toward the radar). When you see the red and green together in a couplet, a tornado may be
    forming, or occurring.

Today (Feb. 26) starts Arkansas' 2023 Severe Weather Awareness Week,
and I'll have posts in the weather echoes through Saturday, March 4. It
looks like the arctic oscillation will go negative in early March, which
means colder air diving south. With the relatively mild winter, many trees, flowers, plants, etc., have stared blooming/budding out. It is becoming increasingly likely that there'll be a late winter/early spring frost and
or freeze (it happens every year). Several years ago, it was Mother's Day weekend, where northwest Arkansas got 7 inches of heavy wet snow, and the
cold killed many gardens...needless to say, many folks weren't happy. My
cousin in Erie, Pennsylvania, does no garden work until AFTER Mother's Day.

Yes: really can't get anything done as partially distracted on
listening for a delivery truck -- cars don't make too much noise (usually!). Have to stop whatever one is doing on a split-second of
    the ringing of the doorbell.

If the doorbell camera is working (mine runs on an internal battery,
but the wi-fi has to be up), I can work on the computer and watch the
camera. But, if the wi-fi/internet is out/offline (especially due to
storms), or if the unit is being recharged off the UPS with the USB
cable...I have to sit by the front door, and watch for the delivery
vehicle. I'm always afraid nature will call at the most inopportune
time (it usually does), and when I'm in-disposed, they'll show up.
Waiting for the delivery is as exciting as watching paint dry.

One doesn't get older...one gets better. And, I'm approaching magnificent. <G>

    You keep believing that!!

If I don't inject humor into my day, I'd be crying constantly. As
Roger Rabbit noted "If you don't have a sense of humor, you're better
off dead!!". Plus, the T-Shirt I saw that noted "If you can't laugh
at yourself, I'll be happy to laugh at you".

True. ...So was the map showing expansion or contraction?!

Expansion...but several areas I'd like to see service, didn't have it.
The Moline/Quad Cities areas were on the map. I can email you the file
if you want, or you could probably do a search for something like "Amtrak
    Map 2035".

Just about everything can potentially cause or catch fire! ...Even people! ...Maybe that's the reasoning behind the old Chinese one child rule: less people to spontaneously combust. <rs!>

Years ago I (sort of!) learned to just use a whole new computer for
major upgrades. Yes, sounds slightly expensive but when doing a major
upgrade I am usually upgrading the hardware as well. Plus I usually build/create my own system, so can re-use some components. (And some-
times with the satellite computers around the house the upgrade is a
swap: take away the old, plug in the new, which has been tested up here
    in the Computer Room.)

Also have a few Raspberry Pi's: clone the SD Card for backup -- being
able to pull the card I just screwd up for the back up has saved my rump numerous times!

Oftentimes yes. As I said above I tend to re-use hardware, some of
which would be able to attend elementary school if it were human. As
for purchasing new, I try to stay with those manufacturers who have proven themselves: spend a little more now for quality saves re-buying later.

As for latest-and-greatest, I don't need either. I don't do gaming, so a super-fast video card is not needed. HD quality is more than
sufficient, though if I were to buy a new video card I might consider
the next step up depending on which computer it will go in. Also would
look at the number of outputs: for my fiddlings here at the Computer

"Poop occurs." A fire on a train or truck on the ground is less catastrophic than one in an airplane. OTOH some of the ground
    accidents have come close.
On your quote, it better...digestive tract poisoning is no fun. :P

"I'm Chiquita banana / and I'm here to say...."

A conflagration is deadly, unless used to keep warm or for
cooking. I don't want to be on a plane...as it plunges to the
ground, it's the sudden stop at the end that does you in. :P As
one cartoon years ago noted "If man were meant to fly, he
would've been born with airline tickets". Or like the product
warning noting "Cape does not permit the user to fly".

I've flown numerous times and so far so good!

I'm thinking I'd rather put up with the relatively brief inconvenience
of a long train than recovering from an explosion.
I would, too. But, only in America (and likely in other
    areas)...we race to:
    1) Beat the traffic lights to an intersection.
    2) Beat the trains to a railroad crossing.
    3) Beat the boats to a drawbridge.

I'll admit to trying to avoid the wait, though 'traffic light' is about
the only one I risk. Some yellows are a little short. Trying to beat a
train - uh-ugh! - though the good news is in my normal travels I rarely encounter a train crossing.

As for the drawbridge, none locally, though two turnstyle bridges.
Hasn't occurred to me but the one to Arsenal Island (U.S. Army builds
all sorts of stuff there) has had pedestrians and the occasional car
stuck on it while rotating open to allow river traffic through.

Radarscope can look like Christmas Tree...especially the red
and green colors on the velocity display (red with winds in the
storm moving away from the radar, and green with winds in the
storm moving toward the radar). When you see the red and green
together in a couplet, a tornado may be forming, or occurring.

Right now (early-ish morning of Februat 27) we're finishing up a rain-
storm -- probably the same system that gave the snow to Los Angeles.
Had a super-loud thunderclap after 1 (a.m.) and then it poured like a
bucket for a short while. ...Hopefully washed the house of the winter
    grime!

Today (Feb. 26) starts Arkansas' 2023 Severe Weather Awareness
Week, and I'll have posts in the weather echoes through Saturday,
March 4. It looks like the arctic oscillation will go negative in
early March, which means colder air diving south. With the
relatively mild winter, many trees, flowers, plants, etc., have
stared blooming/budding out. It is becoming increasingly likely
that there'll be a late winter/early spring frost and or freeze
(it happens every year). Several years ago, it was Mother's Day
weekend, where northwest Arkansas got 7 inches of heavy wet snow,
and the cold killed many gardens...needless to say, many folks
weren't happy. My cousin in Erie, Pennsylvania, does no garden
    work until AFTER Mother's Day.

We were sitting outside yesterday afternoon and it did look like some of
the trees were starting to bud. A little early as likely to get another
few snows in March; April isn't out of the question either. And yes, we
follow the "don't plant until after Mother's Day rule" too. Sometimes
very tempting with warm if not hot temperatures but always cools down.

Yes: really can't get anything done as partially distracted on
listening for a delivery truck -- cars don't make too much noise (usually!). Have to stop whatever one is doing on a split-second of
    the ringing of the doorbell.
If the doorbell camera is working (mine runs on an internal
battery, but the wi-fi has to be up), I can work on the computer
and watch the camera. But, if the wi-fi/internet is out/offline (especially due to storms), or if the unit is being recharged off
the UPS with the USB cable...I have to sit by the front door, and
watch for the delivery vehicle. I'm always afraid nature will
call at the most inopportune time (it usually does), and when I'm in-disposed, they'll show up. Waiting for the delivery is as
    exciting as watching paint dry.

But the anticipation!! <g> Here have cameras looking out over the front
yard and driveway, connected via my WiFi. All internal: not going out
into the world and back. My system has to be up (LAN) but I don't use
    the WAN.

Doorbell cameras would be nice but won't fit: framing too narrow after
    various remodelling.

One doesn't get older...one gets better. And, I'm approaching magnificent. <G>
    You keep believing that!!
If I don't inject humor into my day, I'd be crying constantly.

Hope you properly dispose of those sharps!

As Roger Rabbit noted "If you don't have a sense of humor, you're
better off dead!!". Plus, the T-Shirt I saw that noted "If you
can't laugh at yourself, I'll be happy to laugh at you".

There are times to be serious -- and the funeral of Mr. Peanut from the
Mary Tyler Moore show just popped in!

True. ...So was the map showing expansion or contraction?!
Expansion...but several areas I'd like to see service, didn't
have it. The Moline/Quad Cities areas were on the map. I can
email you the file if you want, or you could probably do a search
for something like "Amtrak Map 2035".

A little over ten years away -- they better get moving!

Just about everything can potentially cause or catch fire! ...Even people! ...Maybe that's the reasoning behind the old Chinese one child rule: less people to spontaneously combust. <rs!>
And, we thought having a hot temper was bad enough.

Or "you set my heart aflame: you give me heartburn"!

    They do?? Hmmm.

Duracells leak. Costco, which are Duracells under the hood, also leak.
In recent years they've become markedly worse, now some leak without
ever being used and well before their stale date.

Evereadies don't leak ....as much, anyway....

    Hi Daryl!

There are so many "flavors" of Pi's nowadays, it's pathetic. As

pineapple upside down cheesecake sounds rather good right now. <G>

Right now it's just after breakfast and it that cheesecake would not
    stand a chance!

As for the Raspberry Pi's, yes, quite a few but part of the reasoning is compatability. Intended as an inexpensive option to get kids computers (originally something like $5 - $35 -- and grab extra keyboards, mice)
they were also used by business: some applications didn't need a $500
computer to do something like an assembly line process, And so it was
found the $5 and $10 versions of the Raspnerry Pi were more than
    capable.

So what's this got to do with compatibility? Stuff wears out, gets
damaged. I'm guessing sometimes there is a lack of extra space and so a
RPi Pico which is around half the width of a deck of cards cannot be
replaced by the current RPi 4 which is about the size of a deck of
cards. And so the Raspberry Pi folks made the decision to keep the old models.

Oftentimes yes. As I said above I tend to re-use hardware, some of

It's also "you get what you pay for".

Right. There are times when the cheap version would be satisfactory, of course. I have some 'yuck!' keyboards -- some came with a computer.
Those keyboards had a bad feel but for a while I was using them with the
MythTV Frontends if that computer refused to boot with just a wireless keyboard. Plugged in the junk keyboard, stored it behind the computer.
Boot: "I see that junk keyboard and so will continue booting and load
    the wireless keyboard eventually".

Or the woman who was angry at the hospital staff, who she
thought they had said her Mom was crazy...because "bananas" was
on her records...it was for her diet, not her state of mind.

Good test of motor skills: grasp the banana without squishing, removal
of the peel. Maybe also cognative: don't discard on to the tile floor!

I've not timed but one lately seems like only two seconds: seems like I
get the very start of the yellow arrow (for the turn) and I don't make it through the intersection before the signal is red. If I slam on my
brakes for the yellow I'm going to get rear-ended.

As for the drawbridge, none locally, though two turnstyle bridges.

The forecast for tomorrow (Friday March 3) is up in the air (no pun

    They do?? Hmmm.

"They do??" to capacity or leak or...? Looks like leak.

Duracells leak. Costco, which are Duracells under the hood, also
leak. In recent years they've become markedly worse, now some
leak without ever being used and well before their stale date.

Evereadies don't leak ....as much, anyway....

    Here have noticed Duracells have the highest incidence of leakage;
Energizer I don't recall having leaked. Eveready not really tested as
don't seem to be stocked where I shop.

Have come across some old Radio Shack and they seem to be fine - just discharged from age. DieHards (from before Sears essentially closed down
and sold off the brands) were 50-50: some leaked before being taken out
of the package, others lasted and no leakage even past dead. I tend to
stay away from private-branded batteries as seemed like they never
lasted. Talking more grocery and big box store brands as I've not
    purchased Costco/Sam's/BJ's and the like.

I use enough AA and AAA to buy them by the Costco-bale. Next time
it'll be the Sam's Club bale and Eveready instead.

Wherever you are and they're on sale!

    I have a clock that's supposed to take a pricey C battery.
Behold, a cheap AA battery fits, and works just as well! (Maybe
longer, it's been in there five years now.)

<Chuckle> I'm not sure why a clock would need all the current-
capability of a C battery unless also running a radio, alarm clock, and
the relay to turn on your coffee maker.

There are adapters to fit AAA into AA, C into D, maybe etc. In the
instance of your clock battery it's just a snug fit but in other
applications may shake loose. Might be handy if one has a bunch of C's
on hand but the battery-operated TV uses D's.

I've wondered why there are no "A" or "B" batteries.
    "A" batteries exist.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes
Scroll down a ways in the first chart; they're below AA and AAA
and AAAA (whoever heard of those??)

How about N batteries?! I had a small travel alarm clock using one.

    Barry,

Right now it's just after breakfast and it that cheesecake would not
    stand a chance!

I've known folks who eat pizza for breakfast (I resemble that remark) <G>.

As for the Raspberry Pi's, yes, quite a few but part of the reasoning
is compatability. Intended as an inexpensive option to get kids
computers (originally something like $5 - $35 -- and grab extra
keyboards, mice) they were also used by business: some applications
didn't need a $500 computer to do something like an assembly line
process, And so it was found the $5 and $10 versions of the Raspnerry
    Pi were more than capable.

These folks think everyone's flush with cash...that's the lobbyists and politicians in Washington. <G> I dare them to try to survive on "the mere pittance" I get each month.

So what's this got to do with compatibility? Stuff wears out, gets damaged. I'm guessing sometimes there is a lack of extra space and so
a RPi Pico which is around half the width of a deck of cards cannot be replaced by the current RPi 4 which is about the size of a deck of
cards. And so the Raspberry Pi folks made the decision to keep the old models.

It's the law of entropy...sooner more than later, in this life, things
    are doomed to fail.

Right. There are times when the cheap version would be satisfactory,
of course. I have some 'yuck!' keyboards -- some came with a computer. Those keyboards had a bad feel but for a while I was using them with
the MythTV Frontends if that computer refused to boot with just a
wireless keyboard. Plugged in the junk keyboard, stored it behind the computer. Boot: "I see that junk keyboard and so will continue booting
and load the wireless keyboard eventually".

As long as it works, and is of reasonable quality, I don't care.

Good test of motor skills: grasp the banana without squishing, removal
of the peel. Maybe also cognative: don't discard on to the tile floor!

They might slip on it if they try to peel away in escape. <G>

In the 70's I flew on a few 'puddle jumpers'

The life jackets are the airlines complimentary "itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini"...one size fits all. Those are for use if the flight captain decides to land near a hot tub (the ocean). <G>

I've not timed but one lately seems like only two seconds: seems like I get the very start of the yellow arrow (for the turn) and I don't make
it through the intersection before the signal is red. If I slam on my brakes for the yellow I'm going to get rear-ended.

I felt the same way. Or, you could be like the blonde driver, who hit
the gas and the brakes, back and forth, with the flashing yellow light. :P

Hmmm: a four-way go! That could be interesting!

Especially when you try to explain it to your insurance company.

The forecast for tomorrow (Friday March 3) is up in the air (no pun intended): apparently the NWS has issued a winter storm warning from Chicago to about 70 miles west -- they might get up to a foot of snow.
I'm about 100 miles further west and the current forecast is for rain
or half-inch of snow to 2-3 inches of snow, depending on the track.

We got thunderstorms and flooding rain here (I'm high enough where flash flooding isn't an issue), but there were numerous reports of tornadoes,
very large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding...across the Arklatex, Arklamiss, and MidSouth, from Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. There were some "dead spots" in radar coverage from the National Weather Service,
and it was only through spotter/chaser reports/videos, that tornado warnings were issued. Texarkana and Shreveport, among many other areas, got hit.

Some sort of weather tomorrow (Friday), nice for the weekend, rainy on Monday, decent but cool for the rest of the week....

I looked at the extended GFS (the Goofus Model <G>), and if (that's a
huge IF) it verifies, we could see a mid-March winter storm here. But, more than 5 days out, I'll take it with a grain of salt. However, at this typing, except for a few bags of microwave popcorn, I have no food here. While my disability payment arrived yesterday, I didn't get a chance to order any food...as I was up into early Friday morning, texting weather updates to friends. So, I basically was exhausted...and insomnia (not weather) has me
up tonight. I have got to get back on a regular sleep schedule somehow.

I guess I'll have to order from Grubhub later today. A fellow area BBS
Sysop is picking me up to do lunch at a local Denny's Sunday morning (we
will go Dutch Treat). But, it'll give me a chance to get out of the house,
and away from the computer for a bit.

There are times it would be handy to have a notification like that here but with what I have isn't going to work. Well, would work but would
undo some other monitoring. ...Could do two more cameras (and
Raspberry Pi's!) just for 'pinpoint' monitoring -- naaa!

I also have a camera with the alarm system, and an intercom with the
doorbell camera. But, if my internet/wi-fi is down, I can't view photos
    from either of them.

Wonder if they make a right-angle doorbell camera? Here the side door faces 90ø to the driveway and walk. 'Worse' is it's located on the far side: right side of the door and the access is from the left. ...If
had a professionally-installed system quite sure they'd have suitable hardware, snake wiring through.... Solar might not work on that side because of the shade.

    I got mine through ADT.

So the mosquito population could be exterminated by keeping the males sober?!

That'd be something to celibate (pun intended). <G>

Stay in bed and debris could fly through your roof!

If your structure takes a direct hit from a tornado, it's gone...
especially if it's rated "strong to violent".

Well up to the creation of the Raspberry Pi I can't think of a super
low-cost computer. At the time the smaller/more compact something was
    the higher the cost became.

So what's this got to do with compatibility? Stuff wears out, gets damaged. I'm guessing sometimes there is a lack of extra space and so
a RPi Pico which is around half the width of a deck of cards cannot be replaced by the current RPi 4 which is about the size of a deck of

    things are doomed to fail.

Definitely. One reason I have spares -- well, for some things! Don't
have a spare house and as you indicated above sometimes not a spare $5.
Have had computers suddenly fail -- not lock up, outright become non- functional (why am I thinking the Parrot Sketch from Monty Python?!).

Right. There are times when the cheap version would be satisfactory,

As long as it works, and is of reasonable quality, I don't

I have a few preferences: keypress pressure, layout.... Plainness(!):
the RGB keyboards I would find distracting.

Good test of motor skills: grasp the banana without squishing, removal
of the peel. Maybe also cognative: don't discard on to the tile floor!

Some floatation assistance would be better than none!

Hmmm: a four-way go! That could be interesting!
Especially when you try to explain it to your insurance
    company.

Some time back I read where there was an accident caused because both
light sets were green. Don't recall how it was proven.

The forecast for tomorrow (Friday March 3) is up in the air (no pun intended): apparently the NWS has issued a winter storm warning from Chicago to about 70 miles west -- they might get up to a foot of snow.

it was only through spotter/chaser reports/videos, that tornado
warnings were issued. Texarkana and Shreveport, among many other
    areas, got hit.

The forecast storm for Friday super-fizzled -- drizzled a bit in the
afternoon and that was it. Seems like your section of the country is
getting nasty storms; southern California snow -- caught the last half
of a news segment showing several feet of snow somwhere in California.
My Mother in southern New Hampshire got about a foot Friday and
Saturday. She was complaining hadn't been plowed out yet and had a
doctor's appointment Monday morning. (I was thinking they have all day
Sunday and most of Monday morning to plow but she went on to a different topic.)

Some sort of weather tomorrow (Friday), nice for the weekend, rainy on Monday, decent but cool for the rest of the week....

storm here. But, more than 5 days out, I'll take it with a grain
    of salt.

That salt could be handy to provide a bit of traction to the mailbox!
Here they're predicting for Monday (tomorrow as I type) a minor storm --
rain less than a tenth of an inch; don't recall anything about windy.
For some reason a big concern about this tenth of an inch, and yes, what
they said and the map displayed verifying the 0 to 0.1 inch. I think
I'm stuck on why the big whoop over such a tiny amount; would be a
concern if the local rivers were flooding. ....Thursday night and
    Friday they've talking about snow.

However, at this typing, except for a few bags of
microwave popcorn, I have no food here. While my disability
payment arrived yesterday, I didn't get a chance to order any

(not weather) has me up tonight. I have got to get back on a

I'm thinking getting some food would have been a priority but then I've
also have been super-involved in a project and neglect other important
    stuff.

I guess I'll have to order from Grubhub later today. A fellow
area BBS Sysop is picking me up to do lunch at a local Denny's
Sunday morning (we will go Dutch Treat). But, it'll give me a

Your computer will miss you! Bring back a pancake and feed via the DVD

Wait! Let me get my Polaroid! LIS in some other message a while back,
the monitoring system here is something I put together and so has good
and bad points. Camera placement: could be better. Use windows (the
glass things, not the software!) as not all that interested in drilling
holes in the house, plus where those cameras would be placed running
cables would be a problem. Solar power would be a consideration except
shady on the driveway side of the house and over the years mediocre
    results with solar-powered items.

Plus over the years nothing has really happened to warrent professional coverage.

So the mosquito population could be exterminated by keeping the males sober?!

A lot of "it depends": when the derecho hit a few years back the wind
was coming from the west; neighbour (to the west) had a tree snap about
15 feet from the base and blown into my yard. Tall enough would have
hit the house but it flew a bit and landed diagonally (to the SE) and
    missed everything.
