• Zoom Modem and Caller ID

From Barry Martin@454:1/1 to All on Sat Apr 28 10:20:00 2018

    Hi Folks!

I have a Zoom 3095 USB modem which is having problems detecting Caller
ID, or perhaps the software is having problems, or.... Sometimes it will display but usually not. The 'official' commercially purchased Caller
ID boxes and built in to the telephones always will, so doesn't seem to
be an issue with the data, REN, etc. (I have temporarily disconnected
phones to reduced the REN -- didn't help.)

Per Linux's lsusb command it's: ID 0803:3095 Zoom Telephonics Inc. V.92
56K Mini External Modem Model 3095.

The 'inconsistencies' occur with two computers: a Raspberry Pi Model B
    and my Lenovo T61 laptop.

The RPi is powered with a 2400mA wall wart. Have tried the modem with a powered hub - no better, no worse. (I left the keyboard and mouse
plugged in to the RPi). Using NCID as the software; also minicom to
    test.

It was suggested to try the modem on a different computer so currently
it is on the laptop with just minicom. I always get RING, so the call
    is being detected.

It wast suggested to try on a different landline -- the only person I
know well enough to 'fool around' with their phone doesn't have CID.

In minicom I've altered the reset init$ from ^M~ATZ^M~ to
^M~ATZ+VCID=1^M~ no difference. On a WAG changed the Z reset to the
factory reset: ^M~ATF0+VCID=0 No difference. (And I did check: F0
    and F1 are the same.)

Yesterday tried putting a DSL filter before the modem -- nope, didn't
help! Still some calls I get a CID display and some I don't. No rhyme
nor reason: a 'common caller' will sometimes display and sometimes not:
    the person called at 1:21 p.m. and properly displayed on the laptop;
called back a little while later at 1:52 p.m. and just displayed RING.

A few days ago did do these tests:

    AT%L Report Line Signal Level
Gives ERROR. Tried with phone off hook (ATH1) - same (ERROR).
("Error" means 'not connected', but I'm not sure to what.)

    AT%Q Report Line Signal Quality
Gives ERROR. Tried with phone off hook (ATH1) - same (ERROR)

    AT-TRV Tip & Ring Voltage
    On-hook I got: 46.87
    Off-hook 8.59

(For poops-and-giggles tried that one just now: 46.87. Figure no real
reason to test off-hook as on-hook is when the phone will usually be
ringing and want to see who is calling.)

So any suggestions as to what to do/check to get this thing running
    properly?

    TIA!

    Hi Mark!

Not sure if you intended to reply or just advance to the next message as
yor message came through as just all quoteback.

Sort of an update: appears there was line noise which prevented the
modem from getting a clear signal. Not sure why the Caller ID's worked
other than they may be 'tuned' to a 1200 Hz data rate and the modem for
    much higher.

    BTW, welcome to ILink!
