Well there used to be the old kids' trick probably back in the 1960's
where someone in (say) Boston could dial the Operator, ask for the Nome, Alaska, Operator, the ask the Nome Operator to call a neighbour, Must
have been another step: person-to-person (?) as somehow the neighbour
had to be told they were being told they were being called by Alaska.
My friends never did it as we figured we'd manage to get in deeeeep
    trouble!

Indeed. That could be a very costly prank, especially back then!

Right! ...It's kind of funny where back then long distance was
_extremely_ expensive and now it's pretty much included (depends on the
    plan).

There were (are?) some strange long distance boundaries: here in the
Quad Cities (Bettendorf, Davenport, IA, and Rock Island, Moline, IL) if
one called a certain town not that far away one portion was 'local' and
the other 'long distance' -- depended on which exchange veing called.
