The tire was a very smart solution and quick thinking with the
resources at hand. I've always heard that a dose of water
(hose or bucket) on a pair of fighting dogs will separate them
    too.

Thank you. I'm thinking the distraction of the water or tire is partly
the reasoning behind the breaking up of fighting dogs. The reason I
didn't use water is no hose (nor a bucket), plus a hose wouldn't have
reached anyway: we were gathered in the middle of the street
(residential neighbourhood and about the only reason to drive on it was because lived there).

Nope. Won't even notice. Well, maybe if it's toy poodles. And a firehose.

When you need to stop a fight, you =cannot= worry about "hurting" the
dogs. Because they're already busy ripping each other apart, so the
impact has to be stronger than what they're already demonstrably willing
    to put up with.

Note: I am a canine professional with over 50 years and ~3000 dogs worth
    of experience.
