    Hi Folks!

Probably old news by now but GMail is down: messages sent get bounced
back from the Mail Daemon with the statement no such account. Had read
earlier this morning of various Google services not working Sunday.

Yeah, apparently anything requiring a log on was down at some point over
the past couple of days. Some in other networks are speculating that there
may be some Chinese exploit involved.

I hadn't heard anything about any sort of hacking causing Google to have problems but did read where some U.S. government sites had been hacked
for over nine months and something like 'SolarWinds' monitoring software
didn't catch it. Not blaming SolarWinds totally as have to be somewhat
aware something is going on to create something to catch/stop it.

I had read someplace the following morning the Monday night outage was
around 50 minutes long. ...Just sort of re-infoces if I didn't do
anything to possibly 'break' something it's probably not me with the
    problem.

Yup, and I see in the partial list at least a half-dozen companies I
deal with directly; probably be getting a bunch of letters in the mail
warning of potential account intrusion. As for the undetected activity,
just another reason to do self-monitoring and make sure account activity matches when is expected.

Also reminds me of years ago when I called a different BBS - the SysOp
was telling us users to download and install the anti-viral software he
was using -- I thought about and then declined, figuring if a virus/
whatever gets past his system it's also going to get past mine if I have
the same AV utility, so I used something different.

Sounds like a good reason not to for sure.

I thought so. One did get through both: Vienna.BUA. It was a 'timed'
virus for lack of a better term: only was active and at the time
detectable during certain times of the day -- 6 p.m. comes to mind.
Vaguely recall somehow we (the SysOp and I) contacted F-Prot with that information and they figured out how to detect when it was 'off'.

That's pretty cool. What did that particular virus do?

I don't recall if it did anything nasty like eventually wiping out files
but IIRC at 6 o'clock p.m. (1800) it had a an ASCII graphic of a penis marching back and forth along the bottom of the screen, every so often 'squirting'.

    ...Found more info here: https://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/bua.shtml
Looks like eventually it would effectively erase the hard drive.
