• Proper Shutdown

From Daryl Stout@454:1/33 to Barry Martin on Fri Jul 10 09:43:00 2020
    Barry,

Yes, though even with MS-DOS one should still try to shutdown properly. And the newer disk filesystems tolerate bad shutdowns better -- still
not a good idea to just pull the plug but at least they recover the
data a lot better when somethign bad happens.

There are several utilities to shut down Windows...there used to be one called WinEgress (Egress is another name for Exit)...you clicked on the
EXIT icon in the taskbar, and it brought up the shutdown menu.

I do have logoff doors on the BBS, where one can logoff from
instead of the regular way. As noted, some disconnects are
    unavoidable.

Sure: as long as the exit process has the various necessary steps wil
    be fine.

I even note such in a bulletin, several exceptions, where disconnects
are unavoidable. If they let me know afterwards what happened, everything
    is fine.

The way folks are throwing temper tantrums when told to wear a
mask, makes me leery of getting out, or into any travel mode.

There seems to be some psychological factors going on. Seems the
states (and cities) where people are told to stay home, wear masks,
etc., are having problems with compliance: the people are pushing back, being contrary. OTOH where the people were asked to stay home, etc.,
it seems they more readily agreed and complied.

No one likes to be told what to do...but it seems that even common
sense has gone the way of the dinosaur.

But, I can't handle the long drives anymore...my legs spasm.

    "Next Rest Stop 100 Miles"??!!!

When I don't have to pee, plenty of restrooms in sight. When I have
to pee, not even a tree is available. :P

Yes, always nice if one can log what caused the problem.

What I hear as the underlying message to the news' sound bites is a lot
of 'me me me' and misinterpretation of rights: "This is the United

Amazing how the highway enginners designed it that way!

And right now "Bad Moon Rising" (CCR) is playing on Pandora -- commonly misheard lyric is "there's a bathroom on the right" instead of "there's

Like the song "I wanna talk about me!!". I consider my friends before
I consider myself. A lady friend I have (she and her significant other
have that ornery dachshund, who's my nephew <G>), I tell her that after
9pm, I don't like to call folks...and she sleeps in (as I usually do),

Amazing how the highway enginners designed it that way!

That's like where they add lanes to the highway, but sooner or later,
they'll be right back to square one, traffic wise.

Microsoft (like many experimenters) can't leave well enough
alone. Hmmm...my ears are burning. <G>

Time to turn down the oven! As for the experiments on the computers, no
one way is going to please everyone. Running Ubuntu (Linux) here and
the current and probbaly last major version or two there is no visible
button to shut down. Click on a small downward point arrowhead at the
upper right of task bar, that opens a mostly visual menu window and the
lower right corner of that has an on-off icon -- the open circle with
the bar through it at the top. Click that and get to the
cancel-reboot-shut down menu. I usually just got to the command line
and type "sudo shutdown now" if I need to turn the system off.

I even note such in a bulletin, several exceptions, where

Hmm: I wonder how the traffic jams were during the height of the

    Barry,

It seems the simpler they try to make it the more complicated it gets!

The 2004 build for Windows 10 in June took over 7 hours to download,

2020, finished in under an hour.

Many restaurants (not so much fast food, but that day may be coming)
are automatically adding a 20% gratuity to the bill BEFORE you get your

that's going to be the case, turn around, and walk out. One individual
printed up business cards, noting on one side that "I disagree with your policy". Then, on the other side, "You want a tip?? I've give you 3.

Yes! Never did figure it out nor see any damage -- even checked the
neighbours and no damaged noted, immediately after the incident nor
    later.

Right after they started the "lockdowns", some days, it was

I'm not into 'idle shopping' though would every so often just wander to
do something to get out of the house. Usually had something in mind
thoug not always. This year COVID-19 closed most shops during the
Spring, so those wanderings didn't occur.

Yup: not doing the necessary adaptations to business and more
importantly customers, and for some barely hanging on the COVID-19 shutdown was pretty much the last nail in the coffin.
    Yep.

Unfortunate, though probably will be replaced by others. "Removal of
the dead wood" ==> weak large and small businesses will close, but
should also allow room for new businesses, and as they will have been born/created during COVID-19 their business model and practices will
    blend with the 'new normal'.

Every so often, I get amateur radio catalogs, but I take them

The consumer should have the right to disagree. A fair business would
have the 20% tip policy (and any other add-ons) stated prior to ordering/billing (thinking restarants and stores in general). Have
heard of COVID-19 up-charges where a percentage is added on to the bill (restaurant or store) because of added expenses. That I'd probably also
walk out on: the item is not costing the displayed $19.99 but $21.49. (Starting to like the EU pricing better and better: item is E40, you pay
E40 - all taxes, etc., included. If I wish to give a tip I can, it is
not expected (though I think is customary).

In the case of the latter, I saw a car pacing an ambulance on

Yes, though I'm sure they have had their share of surprises, or at least

the truth is, I can't afford to splurge on anything else.

Every couple/family should allow the individual to have their own
pleasures and preferences, though even then there is need for
consideration. Thinking slightly 'extreme' like drums, though guitar
and violin can get loud and so potentially annoying to the other person.

"Alone time" is generally good: you watch your soaps, I'll play on the computer. We'll watch some shows together. :)

    Barry,

Yes! Never did figure it out nor see any damage -- even checked the neighbours and no damaged noted, immediately after the incident nor
    later.

I saw a video, where lightning hit a wooden power pole. I couldn't tell
if it had creosote on it, but when lightning hit the pole, it splintered
    it into hundreds of pieces.

Cresosote is put on wooden railroad crossties, to prevent them from
rotting. But, while it smells good, it's extremely corrosive.

I'm not into 'idle shopping' though would every so often just wander to
do something to get out of the house. Usually had something in mind
thoug not always. This year COVID-19 closed most shops during the
Spring, so those wanderings didn't occur.

If anything, I'd go find a restaurant to eat at...to save the food at
home, when I couldn't get out.

Unfortunate, though probably will be replaced by others. "Removal of
the dead wood" ==> weak large and small businesses will close, but
should also allow room for new businesses, and as they will have been born/created during COVID-19 their business model and practices will
    blend with the 'new normal'.

Not the good business climate right now.

The consumer should have the right to disagree. A fair business would have the 20% tip policy (and any other add-ons) stated prior to ordering/billing (thinking restarants and stores in general). Have
heard of COVID-19 up-charges where a percentage is added on to the bill (restaurant or store) because of added expenses. That I'd probably
also walk out on: the item is not costing the displayed $19.99 but
$21.49. (Starting to like the EU pricing better and better: item is
E40, you pay E40 - all taxes, etc., included. If I wish to give a tip
I can, it is not expected (though I think is customary).

On Amtrak, tipping isn't required or expected, but if your attendant
    gives good service, it's a courtesy...and that's how I feel about it.

A few weeks back, at a local McDonald's the total was $9.29, but the
cashier said it was $11.11 -- when I said "that's not what the menu board says", he replied "I'm trying to get a tip"...to which, I thought to myself "you greedy fool!!". I know they don't pay restaurant workers that much (I worked for Burger King for 5 years 40 years ago), but that's not the way to
    get extra money.

Yes, though I'm sure they have had their share of surprises, or at
    least "I didn't expect that!".

It used to be when they told me to disrobe, it was "how fast??". Now, with the severe athritis, I need help to strip...but prefer the females seeing me nude. I know they're not getting a cheap thrill, but they tend to be a bit
    more gentle.

Every couple/family should allow the individual to have their own pleasures and preferences, though even then there is need for consideration. Thinking slightly 'extreme' like drums, though guitar
and violin can get loud and so potentially annoying to the other
    person.

At least my late wife was receptive to all my hobbies. We met on a BBS at
the local college 35 years ago. The college is still there, the BBS is gone.

"Alone time" is generally good: you watch your soaps, I'll play on the computer. We'll watch some shows together. :)

Good luck finding something you can both agree on.

Not really, plus a lot of uncertainty. Thinking primarily of airline employees which will put a big dent in the employment numbers in October.
That will have a trickle-down (more torrent!) effect on the economy.
And probably quite a few other employment segments, just the airlines

To me makes more sense also. Doesn't make sense to have a minumum wage

of a natural electrical phenomenon. No sound: so no thunder and also
no crackling or any other audio/visual distrubance.

Thunder always happens with lightning...caused by the sudden expansion of temperature in the lightning channel. Now, in the summer, folks say they see "heat lightning" from the hot weather. It's actually lightning from a thunderstorm, that's too far away for thunder to be heard.

Cresosote is put on wooden railroad crossties, to prevent them
from rotting. But, while it smells good, it's extremely
    corrosive.

    And sticky!

    Wow.

Depending on the mood and what's around we've had some 'weird meals'
when shopping: usually more in the mood for something more towards a
snack than a meal and sometimes take advantage of specialities -- might
be just an awesome homemade apple pie with ice cream.

I saw a bill from Terminix in the post office box (via the app), and I
have already called them, and said I'd pay it a week from Monday (August 3), when my disability gets in. Since that was the only piece of "mail", I've decided to stay home until Monday. As per an earlier message, thunderstorms
are forecast here much of next week, so not much in the line of BBS or
computer work, let alone errands, will get done. But, I have to go get that Low-T shot.

Not really, plus a lot of uncertainty. Thinking primarily of airline employees which will put a big dent in the employment numbers in
October. That will have a trickle-down (more torrent!) effect on the economy. And probably quite a few other employment segments, just the airlines have been on the news lately.

I hate to see the prices for holiday travel this year. Plus, they cram
folks in like sardines, into that steel tube. At least if I went Amtrak,
I'd have my own private sleeping compartment...and could have the porter
    bring me the meals.

On Amtrak, tipping isn't required or expected, but if your
    attendant gives good service, it's a courtesy...and that's how I
    feel about it.

To me makes more sense also. Doesn't make sense to have a minumum wage and then have a group excluded, expected to make a living on 'gifts'

busboy, kitchen staff. Well what if the meal was cooked poorly but the server tried to correct -- I don't have a way to 'punish' the cook but 'treat' the server.....

Years ago, I worked at a restaurant, that had "the community tip fund". Whether you laxed around in serving customers, or went the extra mile,
everyone got the same tip...and to me, that wasn't right.

A few weeks back, at a local McDonald's the total was $9.29,
but the cashier said it was $11.11 -- when I said "that's not
what the menu board says", he replied "I'm trying to get a

Definately not. Would be tempting to call for a manager but as verbal would have been a case of "he said/she said" -- pretty doubtful someone else would have been paying attention mych less overheard the
    transaction.

In nearly all the McDonald's restaurants in the Little Rock area,
the management seemingly doesn't care. Before my Mom's death a year
ago, I'd stop by the McDonald's in Lonoke (at least 25 miles east of
Little Rock), at Exit 175 and Interstate 40...their service was much
better. The nursing home was a few miles away, but I wanted something
to eat before heading back home.

At least my late wife was receptive to all my hobbies. We met
on a BBS at the local college 35 years ago. The college is still

    miss her. :'(

There are some TV shows we both like, there are some one or the other

Janice could watch the most graphic blood, guts, and gore animal cruelty,

as a clam. I either hid in the back room, or took the dachshund for a walk.

Yes, if that's the only piece of mail and it's already been taken care
of no need to rush down to the Post Office. ...Will be 'interesting' to
see what we get for mail Monday. Saturday's (yesterday's) mail
notification thing said we were to get two bills and an unknown
(usually is magazines or weekly micro-newspaper-mostly-grocery-ads
thing). No mail delivered here, saw the postman walking along the
street which probably means Linda to the north didn't get any mail
either (the carriers usually cut across the yards). Sort of watched
across the street and most on that side got 'missed'. Could see if no deliveries at all because of the heat but there were a couple.

Some U.S. airlines are pretty much cramming everyone together 'as

some distancing. AFAIC a better option but still not enough. Right now
if I _had_ to fly I'd be choosing the airline/flight with the empty

On Amtrak, tipping isn't required or expected, but if your

Yes: a tip should be extra, on top of; as you said, for better-than-
expected service, attitude, etc. OTOH I suppose not giving the staff a
full paycheck and expecting the amount missing to be made up by tips is
one way to keep the servers 'hungry' and so encourage them to give good
service (as opposed to plopping the food before the patron) -- I don't
know: I never worked in a restaurant.....

Agree. I'm tipping _my_ server, not the one in the next aisle over.
OTOH there are some restaurants where the servers work together: one
server may take the order and be the main server, when the food comes
out two or three other servers help the main server present the food.

A few weeks back, at a local McDonald's the total was $9.29,

I remember years ago McDonald's was having some sort of a special and
one or the other of us was working late so picking up a fast meal made
sense. On the way home there are two McDonald's, one about four miles
from the house on the right, so easy to get in and out but the food
would cool down a bit before getting home. The other was about a mile
from the house, so the food would be still hot but getting in and out
was not as convenient as on the left. Both on busy four-lane roads.

One McDonald's used buns with sesame seeds, the other plain. One used
sliced onions, the other chopped (and so more like a relish). Couple of
    other differences.

Yesterday, a $6 clinic bill showed up. I may wait until Monday to pay it. But, I basically am "broke" until Monday. At least I have plenty of food

So many today think that is a demeaning occupation. But, if you can "cut

Yes, if that's the only piece of mail and it's already been taken care
of no need to rush down to the Post Office. ...Will be 'interesting'
to see what we get for mail Monday. Saturday's (yesterday's) mail notification thing said we were to get two bills and an unknown
(usually is magazines or weekly micro-newspaper-mostly-grocery-ads
thing). No mail delivered here, saw the postman walking along the
street which probably means Linda to the north didn't get any mail
either (the carriers usually cut across the yards). Sort of watched across the street and most on that side got 'missed'. Could see if no deliveries at all because of the heat but there were a couple.
Yesterday, a $6 clinic bill showed up. I may wait until Monday
to pay it. But, I basically am "broke" until Monday. At least I
have plenty of food and drink here.

You've simply converted your cash assets into food assets.

As for my mail, they're trying something at the Post Office. Summary of
the summary (so sencond hand information) I got was the carrier goes in
an hour later, supposed to get off an hour earlier too (??) and the mail
I see in the postal service's e-mail is now scheduled to be delivered
the day following. (So the mail pictured in Monday's e-mail is now
delivered on Tuesday instead of that day.)

Some U.S. airlines are pretty much cramming everyone together 'as
needed' while other airlines are not selling the center seat to give
some distancing. AFAIC a better option but still not enough. Right
now if I _had_ to fly I'd be choosing the airline/flight with the empty center seat.
The groping at the airport is the worst. I'm waiting for them
    to strip search everybody. :P

    You'd like that!!

Yes: a tip should be extra, on top of; as you said, for better-than- expected service, attitude, etc. OTOH I suppose not giving the staff a full paycheck and expecting the amount missing to be made up by tips is one way to keep the servers 'hungry' and so encourage them to give good service (as opposed to plopping the food before the patron) -- I don't know: I never worked in a restaurant.....
So many today think that is a demeaning occupation. But, if you
can "cut the mustard, and stir the mayo", especially in
management, you have a future, as everyone has to eat.

Yup. With corporate cutbacks at the store they were saying the closer
to the register the safer your job was. Loss Prevention was
occasionally non-existant or one person. Stocking, recovery, and the
like was trimmed away. Cashiers also had hours cut but not too badly,
and if they got backed up called for assistance from another group --
but (of course) most whined when they were asked to help other groups.
(Some cashiers were very good about helping, others thought they were
    too good.)

One McDonald's used buns with sesame seeds, the other plain. One used sliced onions, the other chopped (and so more like a relish). Couple
    of other differences.
Admittedly, I do like their french fries.

I've read part of the 'trick' is to make sure they are dry before being
fried. Home tips recommends patting dry with paper towels. (Plus hot
oil and water is not a good combination!) We've been using the air
baking tray for french fries and tater tots -- and for some reason don't
    have them in summer!

I'm not into the graphic stuff nor animal cruelty though can watch a 'dissection' and not get queasy so I get the "is it over yet?" "Nope!
... OK, you can open your eyes now".
I remember in biology class in high school, this girl at my
table was squeamish (I'm the one now), so I had to prick her
finger for her for getting a drop of blood. Mind you, this was
    almost 45 years ago.

Oh! I remember doing that! Stab myself on purpose? Are you stupid?!

... "Can you tell me when my past due amount is due?"
    You don't know?? :P

Some people find it easier to ask than look themselves. OTOH some
billing statements are confusing. Telephone bill says it is due by
August 6, but in the smallish print on page two says it's due by August
10, and after August 10 pay a higher amount. So is it due by the 6th or
    10th??

And then the have some other amount which is $14.75 less than the amount printed as owed.... Heck, now I'm confused!!

    Barry,

You've simply converted your cash assets into food assets.

If the weather is bad, I don't like to get out. People around here
think they can stop just as fast on a wet, snowy, or icy pavement,
    as they can on dry.

mail I see in the postal service's e-mail is now scheduled to be
delivered the day following. (So the mail pictured in Monday's e-mail
is now delivered on Tuesday instead of that day.)

And, they wonder why folks are going to DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.

The groping at the airport is the worst. I'm waiting for them
    to strip search everybody. :P

    You'd like that!!

Only if me and the female agent do it together. <EG>

(Some cashiers were very good about helping, others thought they were
    too good.)

Folks came into the world as naked and broke as you and I, and are
going out the same way. See the tagline below.

That hot grease reacts violently to ice or water going into it. I've considered that air fryer.

Oh! I remember doing that! Stab myself on purpose? Are you stupid?!

Folks think I'm as dumb as I look.

Or they note it's due on August 6, but it may be taken out on July 23.

That's how they get their gratuity. <G>
