Hmmm: nothing was changed on this end. I did notice in one of my
quote-backs a day or two ago (possible Daryl) the mis-translation of a
    high-ASCII character.
Probably just a fluke-y thing... hasn't happened since, and within
the further reply sections of this message, they map properly again
with no problem... I think Daryl had replied to this same message,
but got to it earlier than I did... <G>
Yes, I noticed things being corrected. One reason why I tend not to
get in a rush to fix something as frequently fixes itself. Have been bitten a few times, but usually is right.

And probably we'll never know what threw things off for the one
    message....

It's officially 83ø outside currently and the neighbour a few houses
down is having their roof replaced. Yesterday two neighbours the
block behind us were having their roofs replaced. ...May not be the
high but did get to at least 82ø yesterday. Today supposed to get to
    90ø.
(degree symbol still working, I see) I guess one shouldn't be too
unhappy about the heat... it is summer now, after all...
Right. This morning was a we-should-open-the-windows-for-a-while 68ø. Quickly decided against that by looking at the next line: 94%
humidity! Supposed to be in the low 90's later today (Saturday, June
    27) and the next several days.

Yeah, that humidity would be a killer.... Meanwhile, we enter a heat
advisary tomorrow (Tues 7th) afternoon, until Friday (10th) evening at
8... Temps in the mid to high 90s, heat indices possible over 100ø....
not my idea of fun... Night lows only getting into the lower 70s, too... Fortunately, there's nothing scheduled this week for going out until
Saturday, when the high is "only" in the mid 80s.....

I don't think they'd ever gone out from Daryl's system... I'd not seen
them anywhere before (at least the ones that went out into Fidonet
echoes intermittently), so they weren't dupes from earlier... just
ones he'd written weeks before that hadn't gone out...
Probably. I don't recall if he had messages to go out before his
system had problems. Do recall he was able to download QWKs and reply
to them but had a bad command line and the REP portion wasn't working.
And I think those REPs stacked up.... ;)
Looks to have! I had a problem with one of my REP sets but I think it
was a 'bad finger routine' on my end: didn't give the right commands
as I'm not used to doing an upload and then download together -- had finished the day previous' packet that morning, so upload then
download. I don't see the confirmation listing during the upload as the machine goes on to the next step too quickly -- have to scroll back but had done the download so the scroll buffer didn't have the REP portion
any longer. Something just didn't seem quite right so kept the old
REPs, added a 'may be a duplicate' and re-inserted them later.

And, if I recall correctly, that set turned out NOT to be duplicated...

<chuckle> Possibly! I don't really remember directly but the family
stories of how I got really confused and Dad had to 'de-programme'
from the New Math and went back to the Old Math with modifications to
semi-understand the New Math teachings. I rely a little too much on a
calculator, though can usually tell when I've entered an incorrect
number, and do do some simple math on paper.
I try to make a practice of not using the calculator, mostly... using
more for checking later... or for very complicated proceedings...
    Like "5 + 8". <ggg> LISB4, there's some sort of under-flowing math
processing going on so I usually know when a number has been
mis-entered -- into the calculator or to the journal.
Yup, it helps if the brain is kinda running a sanity check while one
is doing the calculating, in whichever form... :)
Yes, and maybe that REP episode above is another example. I don't
recall seeing anything but it didn't seem right. Or the Data LED
being off on the fiber optic modem -- the tech didn't seem to mind and
one interpretation of the manual's statement would seem to make it OK, but....

Never hurts to pay attention when your mind is trying to tell you
    something isn't quite right... ;)

She probably wouldn't be needing much help until she gets farther
along anyway.... and I suspect turning school into play would be
more her style as well.. :)
Yes. Here school is 'over' as far as the official school year is
concerned. Her parents (mother mainly) are glad as less stuff that
has to be done that day. Still continuing learning, just at a more
casual pace as opposed to a structured one.
She does tend to absorb learning along the way nicely... ;)
Appears so. :) I haven't heard of any issues other than the one like
your son had: I know the answer, you know I know the answer, so why
waste time. Or not finishing lesson plans because wants a break to do
something else for a while. She doesn't quite realize the need to
finish this 'job' before starting the next. Both essentially the same
    issue.
Learning how to learn and how to be taught... ;)
All part of the learning process.

    Yup.

As for next school year -- presuming they're going back to the
classroom but not 100% certain. Have heard snippets of the various
local school boards are considering various options, asking for
parental input on what they would like to do, what worked and didn't
work last session (during COVID-19), etc.
There's still a lot of things up in the air, since things really
aren't known about how things really are tracking...
Yes, and the plan could be to open and some event occur effecting
last-minute changes. ...At this point I'd be thinking "it's back to
school" but also make considerations for home-schooling.
One thing we've all learned... be ready with contingency plans... ;)
Definitely! There have been announcements on this week's news of
various school districts on both sides of the River having meetings/ virtual meetings to discuss various options, what worked, what didn't, what sort of did and so needs tweaking.

Good that they seem to be on top of things... :)

The Iowa School Board seems to have passed a resolution the schools
will not be requiring students to wear masks, have temperature checks, probably also social distancing but allowing the individual districts
to require. I'm thinking at least temperature checks as an initial
line of defense. Ideally would be before accessing the school bus in
the morning, walker and drop-off students using a different entrance to the school to avoid the bused students having to be checked a second
time (which would make the line go faster too!) and potentially
    re-mixing the groups.

    Pass your suggestions along... ;)

the hidden switch. (The house has been sold a few times -- bet the
current owners have no idea of those locks, nor the older 'sneaky'
    alarms.)
Depends on whether or not the info was passed along with the keys
    to the house.... ;)
I'm thinking not. Know when I was still living there my Mother wanted
a speaker in the back yard -- don't recall why it wasn't a simple
battery-powered radio, but a wired speaker into the speaker system
throughout the house. Wasn't loud enough outside so the speaker
cabinet had a small amplifier inside -- so two speaker leads and two
more for the power to the amp. Connector on the outside of the house.
Might have been figured out as long as the speaker hadn't been
discarded, but then also needed to have an audio feed from the main
radio/amplifier in the Den, and part of that system was moved to the
    new house.
So fewer clues for the new owners... or for subsequent ones.... :)
Unfortunately for them yes. Or at least in the way I see things in my mind. Outdoor speaker, probably now listening to streaming music on
the cell phone or WiFi box.

True.... your old setup would no doubt be obsolete now... ;)

Yes. Since i was the one who unplugged the cable years ago maybe I remembered, just not actively. And another part of figuring out the

Had to do that with the computers last night. For some reason, when a

you have to uninstall the original version before installing the new version...you can't do it within the program itself.

Don't recall what that day's weather ended up being but we have had some

finished the day previous' packet that morning, so upload then
download. I don't see the confirmation listing during the upload as the
machine goes on to the next step too quickly -- have to scroll back but
had done the download so the scroll buffer didn't have the REP portion
any longer. Something just didn't seem quite right so kept the old
REPs, added a 'may be a duplicate' and re-inserted them later.
And, if I recall correctly, that set turned out NOT to be
    duplicated...
Right -- not sure what went wrong here, just some step didn't get done
and since didn't feel right redid.
Generally good to trust your gut... especially if no easy way to
verify one way or the other.... ;)

Yes -- twice is better than none.

Yes, and maybe that REP episode above is another example. I don't
recall seeing anything but it didn't seem right. Or the Data LED
being off on the fiber optic modem -- the tech didn't seem to mind and
one interpretation of the manual's statement would seem to make it OK,
    but....
Never hurts to pay attention when your mind is trying to tell you
    something isn't quite right... ;)
Yes. Since i was the one who unplugged the cable years ago maybe I remembered, just not actively. And another part of figuring out the puzzle was how to test the cable -- 'laptop' seems obvious but that obviousness got covered up slightly as usually I use wirelessly. All turned out well. :)
And as they say, all's well that ends well... ;)

    Yup. :)

Yes, and the plan could be to open and some event occur effecting
last-minute changes. ...At this point I'd be thinking "it's back to
school" but also make considerations for home-schooling.
One thing we've all learned... be ready with contingency plans... ;)
Definitely! There have been announcements on this week's news of
various school districts on both sides of the River having meetings/
virtual meetings to discuss various options, what worked, what didn't,
what sort of did and so needs tweaking.
Good that they seem to be on top of things... :)
Yes. I haven't been paying attention enough to know what the progress
    is.
After all, at the moment, you have no real need to pay
    attention... :)

I've been lightly monitoring and that's about it -- enough to answer a
few "what do you think about this option" type question. So far appears
there will be two groups of students, first half of the alphabet and
second half by surname, and Week 1 one group will have in-person class
Monday and Tuesday, at-home (virtual) Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Week
2 same group will be virtual M and Tu, in-person W, Th, F. The second
group will have the mirrored schedule.

Masks and social distancing required. There was also something about
how breakfasts and lunches would be done -- no self-service, IIRC they
weren't eating in the cafeteria but in class to contain the groups,
    social distancing, etc.

I don't recall how recess, etc., were being conducted.

What's sort of funny/a shame is the school Autumn is attending was just constructed - literally: it was built over the last two years and opened
last January. Quite sure it has had to be remodelled already to deal
    with the COVID-19 requirements.
