That is, however, how many people seem to think... Everyone is
supposed to jump on the bandwagon of the newest and supposedly
greatest... why keep old just because it works fine as it is...
We're not 'everybody'! 'New and improved' might be better, but is it
better for me? I usually don't need the latest and greatest,
Indeed. And from my point of view, not having to learn new spells
    is a major goodness... :)
True! And sometimes with the new they took away an option used by a
Magic Spell so no longer works. May be 'new' but for that option not
    an 'improved'.
    Indeed...!!
Appears 'improved' is a consideration by the individual.

And sometimes merely in the mind of the merchandiser... ;)

Though they did have VHS/DVD devices - just 'cheated' and had two
    devices in one unit.
On my computer, the tower has a zipdrive disk slot, and a CD-ROM...
and also, in one slot of the tower a dual drive with a slot for each
of the 3 1/2 and the 5 1/4 floppies... The original computer had a
drive for the SSSD disks and another for the DSHD disks... that still
sits to the side of the computer desk, with the printer sitting atop
    it... :)
    Years back I purchasd a refurbished computer with a Zipdrive in it;
didn't buy the computer just because of the Zipdrive but did select it
over another one without -- at the time figured could be handy to have
the Zipdrive. Never did get used (no media).
I use the Zipdrive disks for storage all the time... and for a while
was using them to download HUGE files onto, since they have more
    capacity...
Right: definite advantage of Zipdrives over floppies. Here it ended
up by the time I got around to Zipdrives being useful thumbdrives were available and easier to use. Here generally transferred or moved
large files using the network (LAN).

And you had newer computers that could use thumbdrives... I think my
newest laptop might have a USB port for using a thumbdrive.... otherwise
I've not had that capability anyway... :)

Also have 3«- and 5¬-inch drives -- stored. Used to install on a
computer as I was building but used less and less until not at all. I
did get a 3«" USB floppy several years back (probably a lot longer
than 'several') but haven't used that in I don't know how long.
Richard got one of those 3 1/2" USB floppy drives, and uses it
for "sneakernet" to the Windows10 touchscreen machine.... for any
    of the other machines I think there's a 3 1/2" drive installed
    for "sneaker netting"...
Right. I've been using 16 GB thumbdrives for SneakerNet and probably
95% of the time still have 15 GB free! For me just easier.

Different computers have different capabilities, after all... ;)

What I use for a laptop, though, keeps getting upgraded....
recently Richard replaced the one I was using (that was having the
battery issues) with a Dell... much larger, different capabilities,
etc... I'm working on familiarizing myself with it...
    I never quite got in to laptops and notebooks. Have, just rarely use;
prefer the bigger screen, a full-sized keyboard, etc. I know can plug
those into the laptop. I guess more started because when I was away
from the computer I didn't want it following me: if I'm outside I want
to take a break from the computer.
I use it when traveling, mostly... Back in the bad old days, I'd use
it to be reading the day before's packet while spending all evening
downloading the new message packet(s)... <G>
Yup: I used to spend an hour or so transferring the BBS packet. Now
it's a few seconds! ...There are files which still take an hour or
    so, though rarely.

Yup, it's only a few seconds here as well for the packets... And I'm not dealing with those huge files that might take an hour or more... :)

About the only thing we compare for price is the Christmas Turkey. I
don't think have ever purchased at Hy-Vee because it seems their offer
is always buy a ham, get a free turkey. We don't need a ham!
Schnuck's, Target, Walmart, Aldi usually have a week with a
super-cheap price and get it then, making room in the freezer here
    until time to thaw.
We don't get the turkey, either... ;) I'll generally buy a package of
two turkey thighs, and that will do us (especially as we much prefer
the dark meat, not the breast)... but then, we are generally going
somewhere else for Thanksgiving and for Christmas, so another reason
not to need for the festivity... Wegmans generally has some sort of
decent price per pound on it for the holidays, though... if we were
    interested...
Yes, if just the two of you no need to buy even a small turkey -- leftovers for next Thanksgiving! The drumsticks would be enough and enough of the 'turkey' feeling. We've done Cornish Game Hens: festive, something different, easy to cook, and no to one leftover meal.

I don't think we've ever done them, but I have bought them in the past
on request when buying for someone else... :)

Yes, I suppose there is some logic down the road somewhere. Not sure
if the manufacturer really cared: you want a blue light, buy enough,
sure! You want with a flimsy roller that is going to break and make us
    look bad? No.
The differentiating at least needs to uphold the quality of the
    product, after all... ;)
"Blue LEDs rule!" "White light is right!" <g> In this instance
there were no other differences but when we were shopping around for
a refrigerator noting things like the shelving: open racks vs. solid
shelves, number, if could be moved. Lighting in the refrigerator and
freezer compartments would be a yes, what colour - egh!
Yup, shelving was something we paid attention to, also... especially
the flexibility and ease of cleaning... No light in our freezer,
    though... :)
Freezers usually get packed so the built-in light is usually manages
to get covered, or at least with incandescent type.

    Exactly. :)

With the LEDs could probably put the strip at the front or along the
top. IMO a freezer light is handy but not a deal-killer.

I'd agree it could be handy, but never has been an option we've bought
    or even seriously considered buying...

for us, the water and ice in/on the fridge would be a liability...
we'd just as soon have the extra space they consume available, as
well... but we would be a little more particular about the color....
When you look around for a new 'fridge the water in the door option
probably doesn't take too much room: small container in the back of
the refrigerator to cool the water, a spigot area on the front door.
Still something else to break down... ;) And might still take up
more space than I'd want it to... :)
The ice maker does take up a lot of space, one reason why we have a
second bare-bones refrig in the basement; plus my old 5.1 (or is it
3.1?) cubic foot freezer from the apartment. OTOH we do buy a lot of frozen/to be frozen food.

Soon after we moved into this house, we bought a full-sized upright
freezer which we put in the basement... we also buy a lot of frozen or
to be frozen food... and years ago, I also bought a lot of veggies and
fruits to freeze and put up for the winter... haven't done that recently though... I did green and wax beans, broccoli, cauliflower, blueberries, strawberries... don't remember what else....

OTOH did see while back a case with a medium-resolution
display on the case -- hmm: maybe put the weather stuff on it??!!
Yup, some of the bells and whistles are just distractions... ;)
But if one has a valid use for it, then maybe.... ;)
For me the display on the side of the computer case could be of
interest. Would require some rearranging: currently this computer is
on a little table (UPS is under the table) off the right side of the
Computer Desk - would either need to be elevated or probably make more
sense just to put the the computer on the end of the desk and use the
top of the table for storage. ...And one has to remember the computer
case's display is on the left side; I temporarily put the backup
computer on the left side of the desk and in that configuration the
    display would not show!
Yup, you'd need to rearrange for that to work for you.... ;)
Right. This computer desk has a space for a computer (desktop,
upright) to my left, which I always thought was odd as most people are right-handed. There is a corresponding space on the left with a CD/DVD rack and two narrow storage spaces -- I've got notebooks in them. And
no, can't be swapped. ...Actually the computer position on the left
makes sense as they put the space for a printer on the left. The laser printer doesn't fit and so now has the shredder.

Hmmm... that begins to sound like a major rearrange, along with possibly
    new furniture.... ;)

Well it is 'new' to both and 'improved' the bottom line of the

my newest laptop might have a USB port for using a thumbdrive.... otherwise I've not had that capability anyway... :)

And there are other ports which will allow the transfer of data in to
and from the computer: trying to think of the name of the one for
external hard drives (no, the other one from 'USB'!), not to mention
good ol' Serial and Parallel! ...LISB4, all depends on need. Plus a bit
of preference and compatibility mixed in!

Right. And it seems the 16 GB thumbdrive always works (more due to file
system than size -- I think could go to 32 GB), loads fast, and probably
a lot to do with price: if I can get (say) ten 16 GB thumbdrives for the
price of six 32 GB... I sort of use the thumbdrives like scratch paper.
Don't throw them out, but a stack (16's) works out better than a single

For us the freezer light is a 'plus' and not a requirement; refrigerator

We've almost bought a full-sized upright freezer several times. Once we thought the little under-the-counter freezer died; ended up the fix was
to just move the thermostat knob a bit - apparently got stuck in the

'Urgh!' to both! If a major rearrange or new furniture is needed up
here in the Computer Room it becomes an even greater project as would
paint and replace the carpet. The Big Problem is where to store the
stuff during the remodel; the Little Problem is keeping the computer
doing the recording of the TV shows on-line.

    For us the freezer light is a 'plus' and not a requirement;
refrigerator light is almost a requirement but not quite: I could rig
    up one relatively easily.

Generally now, the fridge light is pretty much standard.... I'd actually
be surprised to find a full-sized fridge that didn't have that... I
guess I've seen ones in hotel rooms and such that don't have the light,
    but they are small anyway...

The ice maker does take up a lot of space, one reason why we have a
second bare-bones refrig in the basement; plus my old 5.1 (or is it
3.1?) cubic foot freezer from the apartment. OTOH we do buy a lot of
    frozen/to be frozen food.
Soon after we moved into this house, we bought a full-sized upright
freezer which we put in the basement... we also buy a lot of frozen
or to be frozen food... and years ago, I also bought a lot of veggies
and fruits to freeze and put up for the winter... haven't done that
recently though... I did green and wax beans, broccoli, cauliflower,
blueberries, strawberries... don't remember what else....
We've almost bought a full-sized upright freezer several times. Once
we thought the little under-the-counter freezer died; ended up the fix
was to just move the thermostat knob a bit - apparently got stuck in
the open position. A couple of times the "let's get the kitchenette finished" and of course a But First wandered in and sat down......

Funny how that works out... <G> IIRC, the first thing we got was a new fridge/freezer since the one that came with the house died almost as
soon as we moved in... while shopping for that, we saw the freezer and
decided to go for it... :) Haven't regretted it... :)

Yup, you'd need to rearrange for that to work for you.... ;)
Right. This computer desk has a space for a computer (desktop,
upright) to my left, which I always thought was odd as most people are
right-handed. There is a corresponding space on the left with a CD/DVD
rack and two narrow storage spaces -- I've got notebooks in them. And
no, can't be swapped. ...Actually the computer position on the left
makes sense as they put the space for a printer on the left. The laser
printer doesn't fit and so now has the shredder.
Hmmm... that begins to sound like a major rearrange, along with
    possibly new furniture.... ;)
'Urgh!' to both! If a major rearrange or new furniture is needed up
here in the Computer Room it becomes an even greater project as would paint and replace the carpet. The Big Problem is where to store the
stuff during the remodel; the Little Problem is keeping the computer
doing the recording of the TV shows on-line.

The reasons against going for that new display case for the computer
    continue to mount up... <G>

    Hi Nancy!

Appears 'improved' is a consideration by the individual.
And sometimes merely in the mind of the merchandiser... ;)
Well it is 'new' to both and 'improved' the bottom line of the
    manufacturer!
Only if enough of the individuals buy it.... ;)

Very true. Initial sales might spike but if there are minimal repeat
sales that probably means back to the drawing board.

up by the time I got around to Zipdrives being useful thumbdrives were
available and easier to use. Here generally transferred or moved
large files using the network (LAN).
And you had newer computers that could use thumbdrives... I think my
newest laptop might have a USB port for using a thumbdrive....
otherwise I've not had that capability anyway... :)
And there are other ports which will allow the transfer of data in to
and from the computer: trying to think of the name of the one for
external hard drives (no, the other one from 'USB'!), not to mention
good ol' Serial and Parallel! ...LISB4, all depends on need. Plus a
bit of preference and compatibility mixed in!
Which is why (all the various factors) I usually leave that all
to the Wizard to deal with... ;)

Around here similar: updates can be done because of 'training sessions'
on what to do or not to do (looks different - check with me). And you
might be slightly advanced: I don't think thumbdrives have been used.

Different computers have different capabilities, after all... ;)
Right. And it seems the 16 GB thumbdrive always works (more due to
file system than size -- I think could go to 32 GB), loads fast, and probably a lot to do with price: if I can get (say) ten 16 GB
thumbdrives for the price of six 32 GB... I sort of use the
thumbdrives like scratch paper. Don't throw them out, but a stack
(16's) works out better than a single sheet (64 GB)).
Those are still rather large "scraps" of "paper", though... ;)

True, just the simile kind of breaks down if describing as a ream or
    case of paper. <g>

And I'm
not dealing with those huge files that might take an hour or more... :)
    No operating system ISO's?!
Not for me... those are Definitely the province of the Wizard...!
    ;)

If you're doing ISO's you're probably more advanced than you're letting
    on!

Which reminds me: I was thinking Ubuntu
20.04 should be out by now (current long-term is 18.04). ...Released April 23rd, it is long-term support.... <shrug> No real reason to upgrade other than may take care of a few minor annoyances, which per
Ky seem to be more an issue with the hardware.
Check it out in a Virtual Machine...? Of course, that might not
show how it deals with the hardware.... ;)

Based one my limited experience with Virtual Machines installing Ubuntu
20.04 (actually upgrading a VM of 18.04 to 20.04 to replicate what I'd
be doing) should give a decent feel of what would be happening with the
'real' machine. The main problem would be the Virtual Machine is slower
as doesn't have full access to the RAM plus 'everything' is from the
hard drive (the VM is sort of like a partition).

Yes, if just the two of you no need to buy even a small turkey --
leftovers for next Thanksgiving! The drumsticks would be enough and
enough of the 'turkey' feeling. We've done Cornish Game Hens: festive,
something different, easy to cook, and no to one leftover meal.
I don't think we've ever done them, but I have bought them in the
past on request when buying for someone else... :)
Maybe you and Richard can try some day -- buy when on sale, which currently may be a while due to the food processing plants issues.
    Possibility some day.... ;)

I might be keeping an eye open currently: Hy-Vee is having a frozen Food
Sale (yesteday and today) with everything 10% off and so the Cornish Game
    Hen is probably included.

    <lights in refrigerators and freezers>
Freezers usually get packed so the built-in light is usually manages
to get covered, or at least with incandescent type.
    Exactly. :)
With the LEDs could probably put the strip at the front or along the
top. IMO a freezer light is handy but not a deal-killer.
I'd agree it could be handy, but never has been an option we've
bought or even seriously considered buying...
    For us the freezer light is a 'plus' and not a requirement;
refrigerator light is almost a requirement but not quite: I could rig

have that... I guess I've seen ones in hotel rooms and such that
don't have the light, but they are small anyway...

Yes, we bought a bare-bones upright refrigerator-freezer for the
basement for storage and it has a light in the refrigerated section. I
think the under-counter refrigerator at the hotel room did; don't
recall: I stored my cheese and crackers in there and that was up front. (Crackers didn't need to be refrigerated, just kept the two together.)

The ice maker does take up a lot of space, one reason why we have a

Yes, a freezer and if one has the room a second refrig/freezer are a
good idea: mainly to take advantage of sales but also to keep from overcrowding the main one in the Kitchen. For anyone else reading
    through this I'd recommend a top/bottom refrig/freezer -- whether the
freezer is on top or the bottom is sort of personal preference. As for
the freezer, I'd go for cabinet (upright) over chest: chest might store
a little more for the same size but on is always digging to what's on
the bottom. Plus less floor footprint, and one isn't tempted to store
stuff on top ==> the door then can't be opened!

OTOH did see while back a case with a medium-resolution

We "inherited" an old fridge/freezer that our church was tossing since

I use it when traveling, mostly... Back in the bad old days, I'd use
it to be reading the day before's packet while spending all evening
downloading the new message packet(s)... <G>
Yup: I used to spend an hour or so transferring the BBS packet. Now
it's a few seconds! ...There are files which still take an hour or
    so, though rarely.
Yup, it's only a few seconds here as well for the packets... And I'm
not dealing with those huge files that might take an hour or more... :)
    No operating system ISO's?!
Not for me... those are Definitely the province of the Wizard...! ;)
If you're doing ISO's you're probably more advanced than you're
    letting on!
Nope, not doing ISO's... I only know of them from Richard's
mentioning them... and somewhat only a hazy notion of what they
    are....

I'll let you keep your hazy concept because I'm not all that sure mine
    is much better!

I might be keeping an eye open currently: Hy-Vee is having a frozen
Food Sale (yesteday and today) with everything 10% off and so the
Cornish Game Hen is probably included.
And did you pick up a couple....? I noticed them in the fresh
meat section last week... but not what I wanted to get... don't
think I even noted the price.... :)

Nope: I don't think I even picked up enough frozen food on the regular
shopping to have made a special trip for the sale worthwhile. Need to
buy $10 to save a dollar, and while a dollar is a dollar the main thing
    was didn't really need anything.

I think the under-counter refrigerator at the hotel room did; don't recall: I stored my cheese and crackers in there and that was up
front. (Crackers didn't need to be refrigerated, just kept the two together.)
Makes sense to keep together, especially in that setting... and
unless it was dark in the room you'd not necessarily notice a
    light in the fridge.... :)

There was plenty of light: don't know what the bulbs were but tiny and
bright in recessed ceiling fixtures. I'm thinking a halogen just
because didn't seem LED-like. (Desk lamp was LED.)

A couple of times the "let's get the kitchenette
finished" and of course a But First wandered in and sat down......
Funny how that works out... <G> IIRC, the first thing we got was
a new fridge/freezer since the one that came with the house died
almost as soon as we moved in... while shopping for that, we saw the
freezer and decided to go for it... :) Haven't regretted it... :)
Yes, a freezer and if one has the room a second refrig/freezer are a
good idea: mainly to take advantage of sales but also to keep from overcrowding the main one in the Kitchen.
We "inherited" an old fridge/freezer that our church was tossing
since someone had donated a newer, larger one... It was mostly
useful in the days that we needed bulk storage, like the big tubs
(5 gallon maybe) of peanut butter, etc... also stored in the
basement with our upright freezer... not used at all any more,
but could if needed, I think....

Dad loved peanut butter but I don't think we ever bought a gallon
container much less five! As for your refrigerator, assuming stored
properly with the door/s propped open for air circulation the only
potential problem would be the seals drying out in the refrigeration
line allowing the coolant to leak out.

Hmmm... that begins to sound like a major rearrange, along with
    possibly new furniture.... ;)
'Urgh!' to both! If a major rearrange or new furniture is needed up
here in the Computer Room it becomes an even greater project as would
paint and replace the carpet. The Big Problem is where to store the
stuff during the remodel; the Little Problem is keeping the computer
doing the recording of the TV shows on-line.
The reasons against going for that new display case for the
computer continue to mount up... <G>
Though a monitor might be a little more expensive over the cost of the built-in option that outweighs the convenience of ease of locating!
    Indeed... :)

Pretty much talked myself out of that option!

Unless they get enough initial sales to make a profit.... of
course the bug reports might give them some pause... ;)

I guess I tend not to call unless there's a major problem... ;)
Or something that I feel should be called to their attention.....

I rarely call/contact also: usually the problem is I just don't like the
way they made the product -- and right now I'm thinking food: too spicy,
too bland, just not the way I like it, which is personal preference.
Did have a package of oyster (soup) crackers which smelt like petroleum
(!!). Half-expected to see a blob of machine grease. Returned to the
store at the next visit; they either refunded or gave me store credit as
    I was shopping anyway.

As far as clothing, I don't recall ever contacting a manufacturer. Any problems the store either took care of it or someone got it.

    Hi Nancy!

I wonder how many people do call/write to the Customer Comment sites?
And I'd guess 95% of those communications are negative: when's the
last time you contacted the folks who made your box of crackers to tell
them you really like the taste? <g>
I guess I tend not to call unless there's a major problem... ;)
Or something that I feel should be called to their attention.....
I rarely call/contact also: usually the problem is I just don't like

And there it's mostly if you don't like it, don't bother getting
    it again... :)

Pretty much! Thinking specifically of a canned 3-bean salad we had last
night. Beans were nice and crisp, just the liquid was bland, so the
beans didn't have thay 'snap' flavour. Never occurred to call their
customer line (would guess it's printed on the label), just more "won't
    buy those again".

Did have a package of oyster (soup) crackers which smelt
like petroleum (!!). Half-expected to see a blob of machine grease. Returned to the store at the next visit; they either refunded or gave
me store credit as I was shopping anyway.
Yes, I remember that story coming up before... :) Obviously not
    a regular occurance.... :)

Just the once. Have bought that brand of oyster crackers again; though
did avoid for the first few purchases and then then next purchase or two sniffed the package before placing in the cart.

As far as clothing, I don't recall ever contacting a manufacturer.
Any problems the store either took care of it or someone got it.
Yup, most problems there can be handled at the merchandiser
    level, not the manufacturer... :)

Which is good: sending a package of petroleum-smelly crackers to who-knows-where would cost more than the crackers did!

Nope, not doing ISO's... I only know of them from Richard's
mentioning them... and somewhat only a hazy notion of what they are...

Yes - reasonably good at playing "Freezer Tetris"!

and unless it was dark in the room you'd not necessarily notice a
    light in the fridge.... :)
There was plenty of light: don't know what the bulbs were but tiny and

Yes.... I was checking something else and appears the hotel I have been staying when visiting my Aunt in Vienna is open. Didn't check on
flights -- last I checked there were none out of Boston and only 3x/wk
    out of New Jersey.

And we also tend not to do sandwiches for lunch... The last small
jar of PB we bought went stale/rancid long before we finished
it... haven't bought any since... except to donate to Food
    Cupboards or the like...

The idea of a jar of peanut butter lasting long enough to go bad is odd
to me! I don't make PB/PB&J sandwiches but do peanut butter on
crackers (generally Saltines), sometimes on toast or English Muffin. Of
course what one person likes another doesn't necessarily,

As for your refrigerator, assuming stored
properly with the door/s propped open for air circulation the only
potential problem would be the seals drying out in the refrigeration
line allowing the coolant to leak out.
I think it's actually still plugged in....
    That'll work.
    Yup. :)

Hmmm: could store all that hoarded toilet paper in there! <g>

Unless they get enough initial sales to make a profit.... of
course the bug reports might give them some pause... ;)
I wonder how many people do call/write to the Customer Comment sites?
And I'd guess 95% of those communications are negative: when's the
last time you contacted the folks who made your box of crackers to tell them you really like the taste? <g>

I guess I tend not to call unless there's a major problem... ;) Or
something that I feel should be called to their attention.....

I only know of them from Richard's
mentioning them... and somewhat only a hazy notion of what they are...
I'll let you keep your hazy concept because I'm not all that sure mine
    is much better!

All I know is that they have something to do with how things are
supposed to operate... ;) Unless I'm confusing them with something
    else... <G>

I might be keeping an eye open currently: Hy-Vee is having a frozen
Food Sale (yesteday and today) with everything 10% off and so the
Cornish Game Hen is probably included.
And did you pick up a couple....? I noticed them in the fresh meat
section last week... but not what I wanted to get... don't think I
    even noted the price.... :)
Nope: I don't think I even picked up enough frozen food on the regular shopping to have made a special trip for the sale worthwhile. Need to
buy $10 to save a dollar, and while a dollar is a dollar the main
thing was didn't really need anything.

Not needing anything is the main thing.... But saving 10 cents on a
dollar is still 10 cents... <G>

I think the under-counter refrigerator at the hotel room did; don't
recall: I stored my cheese and crackers in there and that was up
front. (Crackers didn't need to be refrigerated, just kept the two
    together.)
Makes sense to keep together, especially in that setting... and unless
it was dark in the room you'd not necessarily notice a light in the
    fridge.... :)
There was plenty of light: don't know what the bulbs were but tiny and bright in recessed ceiling fixtures. I'm thinking a halogen just
because didn't seem LED-like. (Desk lamp was LED.)

Might have still been some form of LED...

Yes, a freezer and if one has the room a second refrig/freezer are a
good idea: mainly to take advantage of sales but also to keep from
overcrowding the main one in the Kitchen.
We "inherited" an old fridge/freezer that our church was tossing since
someone had donated a newer, larger one... It was mostly useful in the
days that we needed bulk storage, like the big tubs (5 gallon maybe)
of peanut butter, etc... also stored in the basement with our upright
freezer... not used at all any more, but could if needed, I think....
Dad loved peanut butter but I don't think we ever bought a gallon container much less five!

Dunno if we did it more than once... it kept pretty well in the fridge,
though, as I recall... we used more peanut butter back then... and don't
even buy it any more or use it... :)

As for your refrigerator, assuming stored
properly with the door/s propped open for air circulation the only potential problem would be the seals drying out in the refrigeration
line allowing the coolant to leak out.

I think it's actually still plugged in....

Hmmm... that begins to sound like a major rearrange, along with
    possibly new furniture....
Though a monitor might be a little more expensive over the cost of the
built-in option that outweighs the convenience of ease of locating!
    Indeed... :)
Pretty much talked myself out of that option!

    Sounds like it.... :)

I guess I tend not to call unless there's a major problem... ;)
Or something that I feel should be called to their attention.....
I rarely call/contact also: usually the problem is I just don't like
the way they made the product -- and right now I'm thinking food: too
spicy, too bland, just not the way I like it, which is personal
    preference.
And there it's mostly if you don't like it, don't bother getting it
    again... :)
Pretty much! Thinking specifically of a canned 3-bean salad we had
last night. Beans were nice and crisp, just the liquid was bland, so
the beans didn't have thay 'snap' flavour. Never occurred to call
their customer line (would guess it's printed on the label), just more "won't buy those again".

On the other hand, if it's a brand you buy regularly and haven't had the problem before, one might look for a phone number and let them know, in
case there was some problem at the packing plant...

    Just the once. Have bought that brand of oyster crackers again;
though did avoid for the first few purchases and then then next
purchase or two sniffed the package before placing in the cart.

Just a bit wary for a while... ;)

As far as clothing, I don't recall ever contacting a manufacturer.
Any problems the store either took care of it or someone got it.
Yup, most problems there can be handled at the merchandiser level,
    not the manufacturer... :)
Which is good: sending a package of petroleum-smelly crackers to who-knows-where would cost more than the crackers did!

    Indeed. ;)

Nope: I don't think I even picked up enough frozen food on the regular
shopping to have made a special trip for the sale worthwhile. Need to

True. Now save up those those dimes to puchase an new freezer to

I'll have to add that to my list of things to check when I go over
again -- doesn't look like this year due to the residual and on-going
    effects of COVID-19.
It's a shame how much stuff has had to be cancelled or put on hold
this year.... hopefully by next year things will indeed be settled
    down again properly.... :)
Yes.... I was checking something else and appears the hotel I have
been staying when visiting my Aunt in Vienna is open. Didn't check on flights -- last I checked there were none out of Boston and only 3x/wk
    out of New Jersey.

And then there's the question of whether or not the borders would be
open for travelers.... and how long of a quarantine would be imposed....

And we also tend not to do sandwiches for lunch... The last small jar
of PB we bought went stale/rancid long before we finished it...
haven't bought any since... except to donate to Food Cupboards or the
    like...
The idea of a jar of peanut butter lasting long enough to go bad is
odd to me! I don't make PB/PB&J sandwiches but do peanut butter on crackers (generally Saltines), sometimes on toast or English Muffin.
Of course what one person likes another doesn't necessarily,

Going to the store you at least call their attention to the

Sort of along those lines. I have no idea of the follow-up. Had
happened to see and ask the person who was head cashier at the time
about it -- she looked horrified. Service Desk person more looked
surprised and 'just' took the package and placed in a bin behind a wall.
I don't recall anything like attaching a note for later work, though
behind the wall could be stickers and grabbed back there. Or could just
be "customer return - dispose". ...And the 'problem' is I'm considering
from how I would be handling the issue when I was working at my store,
not the grocery store's policies. We didn't sell food and most of our
returns were "didn't fit" or "didn't like" but resellable.

Did have a package of oyster (soup) crackers which smelt

Yes, probably best to go right to the manager....

There have been times when I've 'apologized' to the employee ahead of explaining my issue: some things I know is probably above their level of authority and so I'll need to talk to someone higher but they're going
to help me and I appreciate that.

I'll have to add that to my list of things to check when I go over

Yes. I half-expect temperature checks to continue -- IMO not a bad
thing, not only to catch and isolate a potential COVID-19 patient but
also to capture some other infection and help prevent that from
spreading. Probably more automated than someone sticking a thermometer
    gun to ones forehead.

    Barry,

Yes. I half-expect temperature checks to continue -- IMO not a bad
thing, not only to catch and isolate a potential COVID-19 patient but
also to capture some other infection and help prevent that from
spreading. Probably more automated than someone sticking a thermometer gun to ones forehead.

In some places, they're taking the scan of ones neck, or under ones
tongue. At least they're not requiring it rectally. :P

    Dream on.

You'd like that!! To me the non-contact of the forehead or neck for a preliminary check makes sense: faster, no problem with potential cross-contamination.

Still slogging along... keep missing days, still a lot happening... and
still too hot and humid to function all that well...

On the other hand, if it's a brand you buy regularly and haven't
had the problem before, one might look for a phone number and let
them know, in case there was some problem at the packing plant...
Like I did with those petroleum-smelling oyster crackers. Just went to
the store rather than calling -- calling never came to mind.
Going to the store you at least call their attention to the problem,
hopefully they'd follow up with the manufacturer... ;)
Sort of along those lines. I have no idea of the follow-up. Had
happened to see and ask the person who was head cashier at the time
about it -- she looked horrified. Service Desk person more looked surprised and 'just' took the package and placed in a bin behind a
wall. I don't recall anything like attaching a note for later work,
though behind the wall could be stickers and grabbed back there. Or
could just be "customer return - dispose".

True... I'd hope they'd at least do some followup with the
manufacturer... a recall might have been in order, possibly....

    ...And the 'problem' is I'm
considering from how I would be handling the issue when I was working
at my store, not the grocery store's policies. We didn't sell food and most of our returns were "didn't fit" or "didn't like" but resellable.

Which is indeed a different story... :)

Just a bit wary for a while... ;)
For some reason yes. <g> And if I had detected an off-odor would have
calmly reported it to a manager. Even if an employee I knew was
standing right there. Probably tell them, but they don't generally
have authority to pull merchandise and may or may not inform a manager.
Could have intentions but get side-tracked and forget....
Yes, probably best to go right to the manager....
There have been times when I've 'apologized' to the employee ahead of explaining my issue: some things I know is probably above their level
of authority and so I'll need to talk to someone higher but they're
going to help me and I appreciate that.

And probably your previous store experience plays into how you approach
    such situations... :)

Didn't check on
flights -- last I checked there were none out of Boston and only 3x/wk
    out of New Jersey.
And then there's the question of whether or not the borders would be
open for travelers... and how long of a quarantine would be imposed...
I have been "lightly monitoring" just because of-interest but not to
    the level of needing details
Eventually things will go back to normal enough... :)

Hard to say... perhaps some places more than others... not even my
doctor offices are consistent with taking temps... :) Some do, some
    don't...

    Hi Nancy!

Still slogging along... keep missing days, still a lot

    well...

Good news: it will cool down! This weekend we're supposed to have high temperatures of only 80ø!

Yes. (...I'm trying to figure out how to phrase this - not to be nice,
just to say it.) I'm thinking a lot of followup depends on the people:
would each individual in the chain do something? Would I have returned
the petroleum-smelling crackers or just tossed? Would the service desk
person mark to check further or just toss in the trash? Someone or
somehow the information has to be forwarded to manufacturer and action
    done there.

Yes -- and my overall attitude even before Life In Retail.

Hmm! Minimal experience here but so far all visits where physically
there a quick run through the symptoms list and temperature has been
done; where I haven't been their 'progress through this' e-mails have indicated a similar check would be done. ...Could sort of see skipping temperature checking if the offices are related and your appointments
were within a short span of time: you visited Dr. Smith yesterday and
Dr. Wesson today. Both are affiliated with Jones Hospital and can
share patient data: you were fine yesterday so no real need to update
    today.
