Did check the manual: the rear window defogger also activates the side mirror heating. Sort of explains the 'randomness' of why sometimes it seemed like there was melting going on and why sometimes not. LIS, my short trips didn't help with the correlation.

About time you checked the manual, then... <G> Yup, if you
weren't trying to clear the rear window, you'd not get any
clearing for the mirrors except by chance (or a stray wind)....
and if the trip was too short for the rear defroster to work
completely, the mirrors likely wouldn't, either...

Then you have either very close destinations, or your car is very
slow to warm up.... ;) Mine usually is up to speed within a
couple miles... :)
