• Tornadoes Was: Train Day

From Daryl Stout@454:1/33 to MIKE POWELL on Sat May 25 13:32:00 2019
    Mike,

Jefferson City, Missouri, was blasted by a violent tornado late last MP>> night. I understand there's widespread damage, but I didn't read the
    news story on it.

On the Weather Channel this morning, they mentioned it has been prelim MP>rated as an EF3. Sounds like a lot of damage but I did not hear mention of MP>any casualties (which is good).

I think there were around 20 injuries, but no fatalities...but another
nearby tornado killed at least 3.

They had that same area highlighted today for more bad weather. From OK MP>City up through Missouri and all the way to Chicago and across the lake to MP>Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were predicting the worst could be West of MP>Chicago, around the Illinois-Iowa-Missouri border today.

Our big issue right now is major to record setting flooding along the Arkansas River. It may even approach major flood stage at Little Rock.

How long has it been flooding? Does it date back to some of the "spring
thaw" flooding in the Plains, or is it due to more recent rain events? I
am under the impression that the Upper Mississippi flooding may be due to
both and has been going on for weeks now.

It really has kicked in during recent weeks, with all the heavy
rainfall upstream in Kansas and Oklahoma.

The Arkansas River will crest at MAJOR or RECORD levels at all points
in Oklahoma and Arkansas, if not elsewhere. It'll even get 5 feet above
flood stage at Little Rock, higher than it was in May, 1990. Several
parks near the river have already been shut down until further notice.

Mississippi flooding may be due to both and has been going on for

The flooding up here where I am (where Iowa 'elbows' itself into
Illinois) is caused mostly by the rain and snowmelt north. The local
    rain does contribute some to the local flooding -- I go over Duck Creek frequently on my errands and it's normal depth is probably three feet;
pretty much all Spring it's been probably around ten and another foot or
two will flood in to the golf course.

So all our water travels down, flooding as it goes, and gathering more
water from other tributaries. Saw on a news crawl this has been the 4th wettest Spring; don't know how other parts of the country are doing but
    seem to be soggy also.

    Hi, Barry...

A heavy t-storm can dump up to 25 million gallons of water on small town.

And, each thunderstorm can have 500,000 tons of water in it. When
storms move repeatedly over, or slowly through one area, is it any
wonder that flash flooding is the result??
