    Hi Ky!

There was a breech in the temporary dams set up around downtown
Davenport IA approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. River waters
flooding up to Second and Third Streets, may get as high as Fourth St. Anyone interested in seeing the local coverage probably go www.KWQC.COM

    parks-new-debate-over-Davenport-flood-wall-509408151.html

The HESCO Barriers are essentially big plastic boxes filled with sand.
Use a bulldozer/tractor/whatever, dump in sand, move to the next one. A
heck of a lot faster than sandbags, but sandbags are good for 'detail'
work and still used a lot.

Davenport has resisted installing a floodwall, mainly because of
covering the view of the River. Cost is also up there. Wall itself
would have to be a little over nine miles long. Not sure if it would
connect with the current wall: upriver from downtown the roadway has
been elevated about 12' and the stone guardrail is actually to add
another several feet to the flood protection. (Sneaky, huh?!) In that section below the road are some railway tracks (Daryl just perked up!)
    and park/trails/recreational, and a marina.

Could but not really do the same concept for the downtown area. The
section I described above is naturally slightly elevated, so a bit of a
head start. The downtown area is flatter, not in a depression but lower elevation-wise than the other section. And of course all the buildings.

Around the water company and baseball stadium they have built removeable floodwalls: essentially (steel?) posts driven into the ground which are permanant and horizontal slats slid between. One thing to use those
for a couple blocks, don't know if the concept works on a nine-mile
    scale.

As I recall river levels were approximately just under 22', record-
flood level was 22.6 feet in 1993. The flooding has been for over 50

Really! My only hassle is the extra traffic because of detours.

Need to check on friends in Milan...

Friends used to live in Andalusia on and sometimes literally in the Mississippi. Normally go out on the deck and look out and 150 yards
away is the River. Sometimes it was look down and there's the
    Mississippi!

Hopefully your friends in Milan are OK.

They are slowly reopening things in Arkansas, but a lot of things still remain closed. I haven't square danced since mid-March...but with hernia surgery next week, it'll be July before I can even think of dancing again.

Masks are now required at our Wegmans... but not gloves...

Masks will be required when I start doing ham radio license exam sessions again, and while I'll provide gloves to the examiners, the examinees will
have to bring their own gloves.

Too little to laugh at nowadays.

I couldn't believe the bizarre story last week, where a woman in the
Ukraine was denied access into a Post Office, because she didn't have a
mask on. So, she took off her pants, then her panties, and used the
panties as a mask (I'm not making that up). I'm surprised she didn't
take her shirt and bra off as well (to be momentarily nude), and use
the bra to hold the panties on.

Well, my late Mom's computer hadn't got much usage for nearly 2
years... it's good that it has "found a new life". As for slow
answering, there are other things in life besides BBSing. <G>

Indeed... and even than messaging... <G> I am gradually getting closer
to caught up... we shall see how well it goes... ;)

Yup, and Cristobal is spreading some remnants up here at the moment...
we got extreme heat today, and there's some chance of showers and
T-storms overnight tonight... and tomorrow is supposed to be MUCH
cooler... from 93 today to only 76 or so for a high tomorrow.... ;)

For the most part, Arkansas was unscathed...we got heavy rain and
gusty winds, but no tornadoes that I'm aware of. It was in the 50s here overnight, and I had to put the heat on.

The furnace hasn't run here for months... when it finally got chilly,
the most we've done was to close the attic door so that the residual
heat (after cooling down from the extreme heat) wouldn't escape out the
top.... All we have for cooling though is windows to open and fans to
move and exhaust the hot air.... :)

Well, schools and colleges did close for the rest of the school year,
and now there's discussion about reopening or not in the fall... A lot
of stuff is still closed here, too, although we are slowly getting some
    things reopened....

I'm not sure if the schools will open this fall or not...but
Governor Asa Hutchinson said we'd move to Phase 2 with the restaurants, etc. on June 15.

We shall see about the fall... probably depends on whether the virus
resurges too badly or at all... We've moved to phase 3 (of 4) here,
which opened a lot of stuff I've been waiting for.... still a lot of restrictions and distancing and protective measures needed, so things
aren't normal normal, but it's more normal than it's been for a long
    while....

By then, maybe things will be happening again... social distancing
might make square dancing a little weird, too... <G>

I wouldn't mind dancing with a mask and gloves on. I could dance
without touching hands, but so many more dancers don't know the definitions that well.

It would be rather loosely formed squares... one would need to be a
master dancer to keep track... ;)

So do I... so I've not even really been paying attention to whether
    they were open or closed....

Some of the local malls were closed for a time.

I know ours were as well, from reports from others, but I don't know
what phase they ended up in... maybe 4, maybe 3....

Masks are now required at our Wegmans... but not gloves...
I wear my mask and gloves when I go out, but with staying at home
until I start driving again, I don't worry about it.
I figure that gloves are more a choice item, whether or not to use...

I have to see what the library will require.

That's something else that's been closed, and I don't know where they
    fall, either....

Too little to laugh at nowadays.
Just have to look harder, I guess.... ;)

Some folks use me as "comedy relief". <G>

The trick is to be able to give yourself 'comedy relief' as well.. :)

At least she was resourceful... ;) Guess she was able to hook the
panties around her ears and keep them on that way... ;) She might
have used her bra similarly, too... (G)

When you get to the point where you think "nothing surprises you"...

    Just never know... <G>

And then that message didn't make it to Barry until I sent it again....
I did get caught up, but then 4 message packets didn't make it to
him... I'm resending them a packet at a time now.... and 10 days later
than the original send... eventually it will all even out...
    hopefully... <G>

Well, I fixed the QWK and REP mail issue (bad command line with the archivers), but I only access the BBS for mail once a day.

I only access the bbses for mail once a day as well... I was talking
about 4 days worth of packets...

And good that you figured out the issue with the QWK/REP and fixed
    it.... ;)
