From Mike Dippel@454:1/393 to All on Mon Feb 13 22:35:40 2023
I was camping last weekend and met some campers that are also Ham operators. When I
spoke with one of them, he was interested in joining the BBS because I carry a number of
    message areas dealing with Ham.

He hasn't joined yet, but he is waiting to talk to the rest of the group to try and get them
to all join. I can create a specific security level where they have access to only the Ham
Radio areas. This would make it easier for them to navigate instead of having to trudge
through the many other areas they would have no interest in.

It is rare to get non-sysOps to join, but word-of-mouth and the ability to create a
welcoming, easy to navigate site can be a good draw.

Good luck with this. I hope it works out. Many, many years ago (almost
30!), I used to host an area for the local astronomy society, after the
person who hosted their BBS moved out west. I got a few new users that
way, and a couple stuck around for quite a while before eventually
succumbing to the draw of the Internet.

Wouldn't it be easier for you to just have them select a specific
conference to download in their user profile? You could still help them (meaning probably do the configuration for them) but no need to set up complicated security rules.

This group has never used a BBS of any kind. I will do whatever it takes to make it easy
for them to do so. Carrying quite a number of Networks, they would have to work hard
to set it up themselves. If he does join, I will let you know how it goes.

Right -- can get confusing when one not sure of the terminology --
checking out applicants' BBSes I'll sometimes get confused because I'm
used to accessing one way and they do it a different way. As for your
user, I was thinking more setting up the account for them: "just log in"
Forgot a major detail: the system doesn't know what to do next! I use a
script to get my e-mail -- your people don't have that luxury!

If he does join, I will let you know how it goes.

    OK, thanks!

I've logged into a few when checking out BBSs. I run into a minor
problem of always being a newbie: my own log-ins have been scripted
since probably the late 80's -- dial-up and huge packets either meant do
a lot of stting around while the mail transfers or figure out how to
    automate.

Perhaps sysops are content in just having other sysops visit each other. I think regular people simply have no idea that FTN/echomail exists.

I'm thinking they don't. It seems the average computer user of today
knows barely more than how to press or tap buttons -- everything else
has to be automatically done for them.

I got started in computers years prior with hobbyist electronics.
Admittedly not the textbook way but sufficient to troubleshoot and
repair. ...On to computers, back when RAM was inserting all those black Chicklets on a board with a chip inserter!
