    So Steam is the new Gamestop?? Who competes with Steam??


    Not many, but there are some.
    Ubisoft has a digital platform for their own games.
    GOG has a digital platform for all the old- out of publish sort of games, lots of DOS based stuff there.
    Blizzard runs battlenet
    Epic also has a digital platform for their games.
    Origin also, digital platform for their games.

    There are some others, but you might see the pattern.. most of these are publishers running platform for their own publishings.

    Epic and the new Discord Game server might be competition in time, but for now.. I'm not so sure.

    So no more rent bring it home, insert game and play right? Even with Steam you have to install the game right? What the deal with the virtual Reality 3D games? I've been a Spectator on Twitch. What are the using to play games?

    Well, I was speaking directly to the PC platform. I do recall days of renting a SNES cartridge game and playing for days then returning it. I've never experienced anything like that for PC. Not sure there are any PC games that don't get 'installed' any longer, even if installing just means copying all the files to a folder.

    I don't do VR, rather spend my money on motorcycle stuff. I play PC games
    on a laptop, and that also limits what games I can play because of the video card. I don't do twitch. I sometimes pass time playing solitaire. With real cards. on a real table.

    There is also GameFly if you want to rent unlimited games per month for like $0.70 a day...
