Since 2010, the character of Natasha Romanoff — better known by her alias, Black Widow — has been portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. (Marvel Studios)

Scarlett Johansson is suing the Walt Disney Co. over its streaming release of Black Widow, which she said breached her contract and deprived her of potential earnings.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Black Widow star and executive producer said her contract guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of the lawsuit.

Disney said the lawsuit has "no merit whatsoever."

Contracts mean something in the US, or are supposed to; however I would imagine she made more on this film then most make in a lifetime. But total, admitted, big crush on Johansson, so I'll let her do her thing.

As for the movie, I'm more of a DC Comics guy (A huge Darknight Fan) but out of all the "everything from Avengers forward" I found this to be the better of most of them. I'm not a big fan of super heros in space, but rather coming from wherever they do, and movies based on their experiences on earth. I felt this spin off of Avengers was much moreso along those lines for ME. But, I would imagine, as my kids so kindly pointed out, that it was lackluster compared to any Marvel film they had seen to date. So what do I know.

I think it's fair to say we won't see much of Black Widow again in any multi-verse stuff anytime soon :(

And so she should. Why people side with disney (who also makes more than
any of us in a life time) when they are the ones who broke their
    contract is beyond me.

Not only did disney screw over Scarlett Johansson, but what about the
cinemas struggling to stay open in the pandemic?

Maybe, disney probably make enough to settle this. Or they'll just recast
    her.

    Exactly this.

Disney is the big boogey man who is using their dominant position to steam roll everybody else in the industry.

    Meanwhile, Johansson is hot.

Who you should be siding with is not even a question.

(Then there is the fact Disney is commiting a breach of contract, but that is a minuscle detail).

Don't worry. They will kill Black Widow off-screen. Or make a CGI one for a short scene in which she gets crushed by the giant robot du jour.

Now I think of it, wasn't she dead already?

+ 1. When I was younger, I was a huge fan of Mickey Mouse and "The
Wonderful World of Disney" TV show. Once I got older and they
became, or I realized they were, a corporate beast, I have a more difficult time enjoying what they put out.

Not only did disney screw over Scarlett Johansson, but what about the cinemas struggling to stay open in the pandemic?

Most of the ones here had to close outright last year, as they were not on
the list of businesses deemed essential, and not all of them have reopened
yet. One good thing to come of that is that it saved some drive-ins that
were struggling before. When I read about this, I actually wondered how
much money it could have made in the theatres when many are not open, not
open to capacity, or are gone.

Much more valid points then her just being "hot." Thanks Apam ;)

    Spoilers!

Yep she was killed off during End Game but I thought with all the multiverse stuff going on now in the MCU that they may have found ways to bring her back in to the universe.

I think it's unlikely now as both sides seem lawyered up now :(

I find the whole thing really interesting too. I also wondered about theater occupancy levels during these pandemic times. I mean there's a reason so many films have had their release dates pushed back and that's mostly due to distributors being worried about not recouping movie making costs /
maximizing profits with low theater attendance rates.

I noted that Disney has said two upcoming movies would be a theater
first/only release (the next MCU Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings being one of them) for the first 45 days then move to streaming platforms
after that. So it seems to be a moving target at the moment as to what Disney are doing.
