I think one of my favorite games was 'rock fights'.

I was really good at that an we used to play that in the field behind my
    house.

We also built a little fort where a couple of the neighbor girls taught me
how to play um.... well, I guess I figured it out at 11yrs old lolz.

I am sad so many people is bringing Monopoly up, because it is objetively a very bad game. The
players get to build their empire with some negotiations going on during the first part until a
saddle point (game theory) is reached, and then it is a two hour long grind of players being
eliminated one after the other with close to no player input to the system.

If I had to name some non-videogame influential games from my childhood, I would name Warhammer RPG
. Knizia's Lord of the Rings was also influential.

I'm not one to argue, but to say 'objectively' might stretch credulity a bit
    - lol. I don't disagree with your sentiment - if you ended up on the wrong
    side post 'saddle'....

players get to build their empire with some negotiations going on during the first part until a
saddle point (game theory) is reached, and then it is a two hour long

.... you spent the next two (ten?!) hours pissed and ready to flip the table
    - it could ruin your day. But... - subjectively - there was **something** to this arrival at the 'saddle' which had all of us coming back for more, even though my older sibs always kicked my arse. What?! I dunno - the thought of holding a monopoly on the 'green' states and seeing your friends fall into
the trap of needing to rent from your hotels? Yeah - I got it, the game
sucked, but looking back on life in the 80s (my perspective) - its what you
had and how you hung out with friends when it was too temperate to run about sardines / hide-and-seek. hehe

I'll give you that the game sucked (from my perspective) - I dunno if I will say 'objectively'. Sometimes I wish the kids of this generation would play a crappy game like Monopoly, and spend time face to face with friends for the hours (short-version) or, sometimes, days it would take to finish a game with six players.

So... maybe I find myself in agreement after all.... but I'm glad the game existed. It was fun (socially), and easy to approach for a kid who didn't
have parents to teach them game-theory.

    lol

It has nothing to do with winning or losing. If you are in a dominant possition post saddle you are still going to get bored to death.

Board game design is so advanced and has been iterated over so often that whether the game succeds or fails at achieving its design goals is quite obvious. Board games can have many design goals - MOnopolyç's was promoting Georgism - but any one that aims to be entertaining needs one of the following things:

    * To offer meaningful decisions to the player, so the player gets involved and sucked into the game. Or some intelectual challenge at least.
    * To offer tension, so the player is bitting his nails because the next die roll is the difference between life and death.

Monopoly does this for a while, then it runs dry. Which is why I categorize it as objetively bad. Bonus ponts because it failed at educating people about Georgism too.

Now compare this to a non-mainstream family friendly game like 7 Wonders:

    * You get a meaningful decision to make every single turn.
    * No player gets eliminated, so everybody has fun until the very end.
    * You need to adapt to what others players are doing (intelectual challenge).

Heck, even a game so basic such as Ticket to Ride has these.

I used to play a lot of Intelect, which is a Spanish clone of Scrabble. I also liked Knizia's The Lord of the Rings. In addition, I used to play a lot of Risk. There was also a card racing game called The Thousand Milestones which was fun.

Nowadays I find those games very basic and not that good (with the exception of Knizia's). There are just much better board games in the wild.

My favourite game too. Still is.

I played it on a 386 DX/20 with 4M of RAM. Barely ran, barely, and initially with PC Speaker sound and Adlib music. Nevertheless, I liked the setting, the theme, and the immersion, despite the low framerate.

I liked playing Doom that way too. At the time, I was 13 and hadn't started working yet, so I couldn't afford to buy my own PC - but I had a hand-me-down PC with a 386SX-16 at the time (I don't remember how much RAM, maybe 2MB). Doom on that ran super slow, though not totally unplayable. I had to make the drawable screen size as small as possible in order to maximize the frame rate. Later, after I started running a BBS, I would sometimes play Doom over the modem with one of my BBS users, which was fun. That was in 1995 - and I think by then I had been given a hand-me-down 386DX-40 (on a new motherboard, which I had help installing in my PC at the time). Doom ran a bit better on that, but I think still a bit too slowly.

Some of those questions were hard, especially when you're not from the U.S. I think some would still be a challenge for me.

Alt-X bypassed the questions in the AGI version of Leisure Suit Larry, while Control-Alt-X bypassed them in the SCI remake. Talk about things I wish I knew as a kid!

Don't forget "Corners" - great game to play when the back seat was full. :D

And if you want to really annoy your parents, play "I Spy" on a long road trip.

This enough would convince me not to have kids.

Oh, yeah, I can't typically get through them without a little googling. And I'm only moderately below average intelligence.

Mine would be the game that I first seen on a friends computer that m me go and get my own 486dx33, The game was Doom! Thought it was the coolest thing that I could call someone elses computer and play again them.

Later, after I started running a
BBS, I would sometimes play Doom over the modem with one of my BBS
users, which was fun. That was in 1995 - and I think by then I had been given a hand-me-down 386DX-40 (on a new motherboard, which I had help installing in my PC at the time). Doom ran a bit better on that, but I think still a bit too slowly.

Unlikely it had 2M of RAM. Doom required a minimum of 4M to run, wouldn't run on anything else.

I ran it with 4M of RAM on a 386DX 20, in low detail, and had to shrink the screen size by one step, although when I got an SVGA card, I was able to run it, slowly, without shrinking the screen.

Haha. There's another game that can be a bit of fun with a few kids on board - "Windmills". Not sure if anyone else knows that one, but the goal is to try and spot windmills in the landscale. If one is sighted, whoever is first to yell "WINDMILL" gets a point. Bonus double points if it's running and "SPINNING WINDMILL" is said instead. :)

I can't really say I had any that were just the favorite. What about all the adventure game? Monkey Island is about to release the newest one on 9/19.

Do the new windmill generators work? The big metal ones?

The first windmill I have ever seen in aside from these was in Bruges, Belgium :P

Now that's a good question. Last time I played the game, there were no wind turbines along the route, but in the last several years, they have become a lot more common.

Windmills for pumping water are common on farms here. They are generally on a triangular tower with a set of many blades arranged in a circle..
