• Magicka v0.14

From apam@21:1/126 to All on Sat May 2 15:47:39 2020
    Hi there,

Sitting here, drinking beer, and trying to contemplate what to do.

I think I bit off a bit more than I can chew with v0.14, and am thinking
    of reverting to v0.13.

v0.14 was meant to address the 80x24 character limits. Given that
99.9999 % of people using Magicka BBSes are probably using Syncterm,
Netrunner or fTelnet or some other 80 wide terminal, I'm not sure it's
    worth it.

Now, people reading messages generated by magicka on the other hand, are
more likely to not be using 80x25 readers than people using the BBS. Be
they QWK readers, GoldED, or something else, for these people it would
    be nice to accommodate them.

So I'm thinking, make magiedit use Soft CRs for wrapping, Hard CRs for
pressing enter, and have magicka replace softcrs with Spaces.

That would result in paragraphs being one long line, magicka would wrap
them for BBS users, as it does with messages from synchronet and other
non-80 wrapped message senders, but they would be nicely formated for
those reading the messages on the other end.

If you're using v0.14, I think vorlon might be the only one left... I
think it would just be a matter of checking out v0.13, cleaning and
copying the old strings file over the v0.14 one. When I decide what to
do, we'll call it v0.15 and v0.14 can be that release no one speaks
    about. Shh.

What do you all think? I'd like to get back at this, but v0.14 is a bit
    much for me.

Happy FTN type othernet coordinator appreciation day!

I guess this is just an implementation detail: as the soft-CRs are high ascii, would this work with UTF-8 too? And why using soft-CRs at all?

It would just be between magiedit and magicka bbs, so when someone saves
a message in magiedit, magicka would then convert the soft crs into
spaces and then save the message to the base.

I suppose I could do it without soft crs, but i am thinking it would
require a lot of refactoring of magiedit to do that.

Mine is still a 0.14 as well, but not a big deal to change. :) The VM
that runs it has been down for a few weeks, but it's still here. One
of those stupid issues I need to deal with.

I don't think it would be a problem. You have a plan in place so I
say go for it. You don't need to be banging your head against the
    desk over this stuff. Laugh.

I am accessing my MagickaBBS using Magiterm because the SSH is better compatible with Magicka than Syncterm is. :) I never upgraded to 0.14
because I was not experiencing, or hearing about, any issues on my board.

I am fine with moving forward as you have suggested. Thanks, apam!!!

Yes, my system is on v.014, and I access it via ssh as it's at my parents
place behind a vpn due to the ISP not allowing my access to the routers interface to open up a port or two. #-(

I'm using a terminal window that is very much larger than the 80x25 size.
