Anyone have tourist suggestions for Augsburg?
I'll be exploring it a bit, though might end up doing entirely normal things like seeing the variety of thrift stores that are around.
But I'm sure I'll take in (musical) organs, too, when I get the chance.
Though it _does_ seem pretty neat with the system of waterways throughout the
city, that I guess date from Roman times.
Sorry, spent most of my military touring Central America, Okiniwa, Phillipines\
My brothers spent time in Europe and Italy etc.

The "Altstadt" is quite nice, it's where the many waterways are,
between the city center and the big mall (City Galerie).
The "Augsburger Puppenkiste" is a famous marionette theater that's
quite nice.
Are you interested in something special?

I hear that everyone of a certain age has some sort of connection or knowledge of that.

Yeah, I've enjoyed seeing the waterways, and how they intersect.
Though today I wound up in Munich,

No, I really was more asking for the conversational aspect of it. If people mention things that are neat, so much the better.
And, on the Augsburg note, I did see something kinda neat, at the Stadtmarkt, where they re-purposed a cigarette machine into an art vending machine. Probably gets people to buy more art than they would otherwise, though it's 4 Euro sketches, so not exactly expecting something fancy.
But still a neat concept.
They produced a couple of popular movies and TV shows: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Produktionen_der_Augsburger_Puppen
I loved them as a kid and still think they are fun to watch.
Yeah, I've enjoyed seeing the waterways, and how they intersect.
And AFAIK it's even a UNESCO world heritage :)
Though today I wound up in Munich,
Also a nice city :) (and I was born there)
In Munich, I like visiting the "MVG Museum", which displays the local transport history (trams, subways, busses). The next opening day is
June 11th.
Generally speaking, the "Deutsches Museum" is a all-time favourite, it also has some other locations where transport items or aircraft can be seen.
As I'm writing to you, I have to notice how little I really know about the cities I've lived in, at least concerning "tourist tips" or something like that.
Although I have to admit that I don't live there since 2006 ;-)
Though that then reminds me of the demoscene, which I believe recently received such a designation.
Though it's an "intangible heritage" or something.
I still haven't seen Oktoberfest stuff, but not being much of a beer drinker, the festival would probably be fairly lost on me.

Yeah, that was a possibility for the day trip, but choosing between seeing various churches and general sightseeing and that, the other items won out. I think the struggle with the Deutsches Museum is that it requires a fairly long visit, because there's so much to see.

I remember saying something along the lines of, "No, of course I haven't been there in a while -- I live here."
Tourist spots are for tourists, and it's oddly challenging to be a tourist in your own city, unless you have someone come to visit you to do stuff.
Although I have to admit that I don't live there since 2006 ;-)
Time for a tourist trip to Augsburg and Munich! :)
Though probably hits a bit differently when going back to a place where you once lived.
Although I'm born there and thus a native bavarian, I also don't drink any beer at all :)
And I think the Oktoberfest stuff is really heavily overrated.
It is absolutely overpriced and far too many people gather there, get drunk, harass other people, get in fights, vomit etc.pp.
Probably, yes. I know some people who visit it more often, and they
plan ahead to only visit one part of the exhibition per visit.
Oh yes. It's also almost always interesting to go back and notice the changes in the areas...

Yeah, gathering lots of people with the intention that everyone gets drunk does seem to invite having what normally happens when one does that.
On the other hand, it's kind of fun to have an excuse to wear a Dirndl.
Oh yes. It's also almost always interesting to go back and notice the
changes in the areas...
And, oftentimes, to notice what hasn't changed.
To be fair, the more historical a place, the less that changes.
E.g., I saw Jacobertor on a daily basis during my trip, and assuming the building doesn't have structural problems, I'd expect it to still be there in 50 years.
But random restaurants? Probably would be a _surprise_ if they were there
in 50 years.
Yep.
It's the world's biggest drug-celebrating party :)
Well, yes. Although that's not my style (but I have to admit neither having one nor having worn one before) :)
Also AFAIK real Dirndl's, made from quality materials and complying
with bavarian heritage, can be quite expensive.
The same applies to Lederhosen (leather trousers)...
Probably, yes. Also because it's a heritage building and thus will be kept alive.
From ~2010 to 2019 I've been to Augsburg around 2x per year, there has been a retro computing exhebition called RetroPulsiv there at the Fachhochschule.
Sometimes, I've also been to the city center and I always was puzzled that the McDonalds is now where it is at Knigsplatz.
In my memory, it always has been where the "Telekom Shop" is today and not where a shoe shop used to be (2 houses to the left of the Telekom Shop).
Beer is proof that God loves us...! :)

That... seems not at all surprising. Though it seems like it should've been at least _somewhat_ cheap on the lower end, historically, if most of the not-particularly-rich people were wearing them.
Mine came from a 2nd-hand store, if memory serves. Maybe some day I could justify getting a "real" one, but... it's hard to find an excuse to wear one, if you're not wearing it as a costume as part of working or joining
the drug fest.

That _does_ sound pretty cool.
Not sure if cool enough that I'd make a six-hour journey for it (I like
BBSs and the demoscene, but, oddly, not so much for the old hardware), but it certainly sounds like it'd be neat.

Hah! "Why are you putting the stores in the wrong place!?!?!?"
And seeing Knigsplatz... I also found it interesting how busy it was
there, and if you go just a bit outside the area, suddenly it's a sleep neighborhood.
Which I found out when exploring a bit, and trying to see the insides of a church or two that was outside of the main touristy areas. But those wound up being closed, presumably because of it not being touristy enough.
