• Usenet Gateway 21:1/10

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Sun Jan 22 10:59:13 2023
    Hi all

Just a query for those hooked into the 21:1/10 Usenet gateway.

Does anyone experience issues of stuff they post on their BBS to a newsgroup coming back to them via the gateway as a new message a few hours later?

So you end up with two messages of the same content, one being your original post out via the gateway to the newsgroup and the second being a copy of the post coming back into your BBS from the gateway.

This should not be happening as own messages should be swatted down by the gateway software but I have a report it's not working and want to check if others have this issue also via 21:1/10 gate?

    Thanks!

Hmm, looks like I did find an issue and *think* I may have fixed it now, but for those of you who do use the Usenet gateway I'd be interested to hear if you a) were having probs with dupe posts of your content coming back into your feed from the gate and b) if that's now stopped after my config tweak.

    Thanks!

I was having the issue. I will keep an eye on it and let you know if it
    seems to have disappeared. Thanks!

There's a USENET gateway? Tell me more....

I did. It appears this only gates USENET newsgroups
into FTN; I'd be very interested in picking up a feed
    of FSX groups via NNTP.

On my Mystic system, a post to alt.test will show as new immediately as I post (within a second). It will not, however, reappear hours later as new as if it is somehow being copied back to me from the gateway as a new message.

I've done this test twice on alt.test leaving 24 hours before checking back with a newscan.

Hope this helps. Honestly I've had no problems of any kind with the Usenet gateway.

You can do this from a Synchronet BBS that is running the nntp server. fsxNet as well as whatever FTNs are available there.

End of the Line is one Synchronet BBS that is running an nntp server (I believe).

You would need to log in and create an account on one of those BBSs as usual to be able to write messages. Some of those BBSs may allow anyone to read but posting requires a login.

Thanks, Al, that sounds useful. I wonder how hard it would be
to peer with my existing NNTP setup?

I have not done this myself so I don't have details but there is a node getting his BBS feed of nets (including fido) by nntp and it seems to work.

Nelgin is the sysop and End of the Line BBS and he could give you better details of how that could work.

Any Synchronet BBS would work. I bring up End of the Line because Nelgin is active in the community and takes care of his BBS.

It does, The system was sending things back and not picking up on that a message had originated from itself. I made a change and I think it's now fixed. I think :)

I could also offer it (I think) via Agency BBS with the Mystic NNTP server. I'd need to check as it's not something I have played with in some time.

That would make a good test of Mystic's nntp service. I have never done that.

I just had a peek at the nntp server setup in ./mystic -cfg. There is also an ssl port listed there although it is blank by default. Synchronet uses port 563 by default for the ssl port. It would be interesting to know how that works.

BBBS can do this too, although it does it like it was 1995. No ssl and no utf8 support. BBBS can peer but it has no nntp server for users to access.

I might be able to use ssl with the right command line, but still.. no server. Bummer.

I used to use NNTP and a iphone app to read/write netmail on both mystic
and sbbs. Worked fine. Considering writing a NNTP server for cyberbbs
at some point once i iron out regular echomail. I want to put in a smtp
server as well so those are top of my list.
