I think the point was what was considered news. I don't know what your news is like over there, but I kind of agree with mcdoob on this. Will Smith oscar slap, johnny depp vs amber heard all getting more coverage than war in ukraine.

We had a little bit of ukraine news at the start of the war, but to the mainstream media here it doesn't seem important anymore. I guess that's a reflection on the priorities of it's target audience.

Not that we can't have frivolities in the news, just I think when it comes at the expense of serious things it's a problem.

Ukraine got more intense coverage for a longer period of time, people talked about it at work, the company I work for pulled out of Russia, lost hundreds of millions, relocated its workers, the country is sending tens of billions in aid.

I have to agree with every bit of this.

For the first few weeks of the war in Ukraine, the US "mainstream" media covered it almost 24x7. Seriously. Even now the time spent on it every
day is measured in hours. Really can't see how anyone would expect more
than that. Especially now that there really doesn't seem to be much new happening day-to-day. Looks like Russia's next Afghanistan to me.

This is because Will SMith oscar slap and Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard were news when they were released. Meanwhile the news with Ukraine were "Ukraine is being invaded," which were fresh when Ukraine was invaded. Now the news are kind of stale. Nobody in the general audience wants to hear that some army advanced 1 kilometer this month. Not that it matters if they did because a) at this point the news would be unreliable and b) people who wants to access that information has information outlets covering it out of mainstream channels anyway.

Seriously, Middle East news channels were covering the war with much much less than ours did.

I think the Nuclear Putin panic is as justified as the Nuclear Trump panic, which is to say, it is not. Fearmongering helps nobody but news outlets.

The Russian government has declared its goals from the get go and as long as they don't achieve them, they will keep doing what they are doing indifinitely unless they start wearing out way waster than Europe. The way they are closing commercial deals with Europe and opening them with Asian countries suggests this is actually the plan.

According to an ongoing temperature analysis led by scientists at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the average global temperature on Earth has increased by at least 1.1 Celsius (1.9 Fahrenheit) since 1880. The majority of the warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15 to 0.20C per decade.

The maps show temperature anomalies in five-year increments since 1880. These are not absolute temperatures, but changes from the norm for each area. The data reflect how much warmer or cooler each region was compared to a base period of 1951-1980. (The global mean surface air temperature for that period was 14C (57F), with an uncertainty of several tenths of a degree.

So, maybe a pragmatic thought is needed rather then a draconian one? We all need to be better a steward on this planet, however to go off the rails is a little much.

While I think there should still be some coverage of the war in Ukraine, I think by now people know there's still a war going on there.

Covid was being covered in the news fairly steadily for the past copule years. It seemed like I'd hear something about covid pretty much every day in the news, though that seems to be tapering off now too.

How much news coverage of something do we need? It seems at some point, it becomes fairly common knowledge of what's going on currently.

They did here, because at the time of the ukraine war started we had massive floods going on, and floods were plastered on the news. We got a little bit after the floods went away, and then almost nothing since.

It's certainly tailed off quite a bit here. Still touched on quite a
few times per day on the cable news outlets, and still have live
reporters on-scene, but it's predictably become.... a little boring.
Just like any other major news story, it plays out after a while.

Also, quite honestly, the USA has a few other problems going on that are
quite a bit more important to Americans than a small-ish war going on thousands of miles away, that doesn't really directly affect us too
    much.

Probably because Europe is far away from Australia, so much that a big badass war over here is of lessed concern compared to anything happening in Australia itself.

If there was some bad war in the southmost part of Africa it would not make it to the news here, or at least it would not be as persistent, because it would be less relevant to Europeans.

Yeah, I get that. I'd imagine it's more played on the world news on SBS or ABC. I don't watch all the news on every channel, just whatever is on when we sit down at dinner.

Just seems to me that there is too much weight on the private lives of celebrities vs other things. It's all tailored to who's watching the news, for ratings.

It appears to be a sign of the times. Lowest common denominator is the low grade morons that watch stuff like the Crapdashians.. On a slightly different front, it seems to be a slight improvement in the men are automatically

I don't get any regular TV here... I pick up bits and pieces via assorted TV based web pages.. but the other thing to bear in mind is we only have one
news room in Austraya based in Sydney, aside from Aunty. I tend to get my ukraine news via the uterustube...
