This sort of nastiness is way outside the spirit of fsx. Knock it off.

Very true. But sometimes..... is the person who says something to an
annoying post/poster *ALWAYS* the one that's wrong? That's how it seems
to be interpreted. In my opinion, *SOMETIMES* it is CORRECT to say
something to the annoying poster. Otherwise, it just continues forever.

I feel like I’ve said this before, but I’ll repeat. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. You, Nelgin, and sometimes others are especially aggressive and often cruel towards The Millionaire and Phil.

As if somehow you’re all special or the echo/IRC police or whatever. But instead of using ignore/twitlist, you guys lash out at these people and muck up boards with useless messages.

Does TM and Phil annoy other people? Of course they must. Do those people feel entitled to be unkind? Nope.

I agree, though saying something to an annoying poster should always be done tactfully at first. The person who is annoying may not be aware that they are.

The frequent random one line questions do wear thin though, and doing that just to see replies and get your jollies from that doesn't make for a great message network.

If conversation on fsxNet is dominated around questions like "Do you like Campbells soup" or "What do you like about raining days" then the whole 'net turns into a farce.

Who are they annoying though? What might be annoying to one person isn't necessarily annoying to another, and who here can speak for everyone?

Do you know that this person has that motivation for posting them? If that was the motivation, perhaps they shouldn't post them. I don't know that it is though.

How do you start a conversation? Random topic starters could invite healthy conversation about said topic, something we didn't think about discussing before.

I don't think it turns into a farce, what puts a net on the nose for me is deliberate nastiness - which is sometimes disguised as sarcasm, sometimes not.

If one doesn't want to talk about campbell's soup or rainy days, they are free to hit next - and while the same could be said about nasty posts, nasty posts shouldn't be posted in the first place.

You start a conversation by posting something, asking a question, making a comment. But at least put some thought into it. Make it relevant, topical, or at least ask a question which has some depth.

I'm not against people asking simple questions, but again and again and again? And just for the sake of knowing that there is activity and feeling that you've done it?

He appears to... by some of his own followups... this thread has some number

I'm not sure who actually got derailed here this time though.. While I can agree with G at times the Mullionaire can be highly irritating... and you
don't know why this is so... some one might be having a bad pain week, that
can make you a lot less tolerant of all sorts of bullshit. Or some other reason.. Neither party is wholly innocent.

In this case it appears to be that G has been given the short end though, we had a one liner from Mull, a somewhat snarky reply, and then a pile of G response for some reason, if G's reponse was left alone it'd probably have
all just gone under the carpet... instead it's just become perpetuated..

Personally, I just "keep scrolling" when I see the messages that are annoying.

I think that it's OK to try to stimulate conversation by posting new threads. However, I think it's probably a good idea to not post "brain droppings" like "What color is your favorite apple" and rather things that people might actually want to talk about, such as the threads discussing Google, or other topics that BBS users might find interesting.

Replying to the "annoying" threads is just a waste of my time, so I don't bother with it.

I was going to say the same things. I've seen people complaining about TM's posting style for at least a couple years now, here and on another message network, and after a while it has started to seem like much ado about nothing.
As you said, what's annoying to someone might not be annoying to someone else, and you're free to skip messages that don't interest you.

I think Phil mainly uses the Synchronet IRC channel, and has mainly used Synchronet in the past. I doubt many people on FSXNet would know of him.

I'd heard Phil has been around since before I started using Synchronet (2007). From what I've heard, it sounds like he has always behaved in a way that some people might consider annoying - Asking weird questions, not answering questions, stating things as fact that are actually false, etc.. Years ago, there was one BBS I visited that had a web page called "The Phil File" with a list of oddball quotes & such from Phil. I don't think that page is around anymore though.

Does TM and Phil annoy other people? Of course they must. Do those
    people feel
    entitled to be unkind? Nope.
I even get abuse from MRO/Jas on Dovenet its not fun. Even when you try to gently move some discussion it ends up being pointless at times.

Its a poor illustration if nobody or virtually nobody knows who you're talking about.

The post didn’t have you in the To field now, did it?

Granted, but you posted it aimlessly to a pubic echo... so there is that

MRO could be an ass to anyone.. I think it's pointless to try to have any kind of discussion with him, as it could easily end up with him insulting you in some way.

How do you start a conversation? Random topic starters could invite healthy conversation about said topic, something we didn't think about discussing before.

I don't think it turns into a farce, what puts a net on the nose for me is deliberate nastiness - which is sometimes disguised as sarcasm, sometimes no

The problem with the sort of one-liner conversation starters we are talking about is that the OP rarely follows through with the conversation. The end result is that the conversation does not happen even if somebody wants to follow through.

We may get 5 one-liners, in the style "Do you like pineapple on your pizza?" and then I may answer one of those with "I love it, but only if they make it like my grandmother used to. Do you have a particular pizza with pineapple you prefer?"

And then silence happens because the OP has moved over to the next 5 conversation starters.

Eventually, what you have is you have a degraded noise/signal ratio since you have more text in the network but not more actual discussion. And this
    isn't good.

To be truthful, I think TM has done some effort in trying to follow through with conversations he starts, so there is that :-)

In this case it appears to be that G has been given the short end
though, we had a one liner from Mull, a somewhat snarky reply, and then
a pile of G response for some reason, if G's reponse was left alone it'd probably have all just gone under the carpet... instead it's just become perpetuated..

'Given' the short end? Don't you mean 'taking' it? (o_O)

There is a reason that I finally decided to make use of a twit filter. I didn't like doing it, because I strongly believe in free speech. And I don't know what was said in this thread (by many parties), because of that filter. The only reason I even saw this post is because 'G' was never mentioned by name.

But if people are getting into a flame war again, then that decision was the right one. May it never have to be made again!

IMHO, he's earned it. I won't be shedding a tear.

Again, I literally cannot read any messages to or from 'G'...and possibly any message that mentions him in full name...He's definitely earned his place on my twit filter.
