Yeah, that's the thing about mobile devices - They're more locked down compared to desktop computers. I think I've heard of people being able to install plain Linux on Android mobile devices, and I imagine someone may have figured out how to hack the iPad/iPod/iPhone to install something else. I don't think there are many other operating systems that would even work on an iPad though (aside perhaps from a Linux distro).

Actaually if you Jail break them you can install Linux. But if you want that its cheaper to just buy a Linux tablet. It will be faster. As for phones if you really want to get away from Apple and Google there 2 Linux phone manufacturers out there. They even offer a docking station so you can use it like a computer when you get to where your going.

I know PinePhone was one https://www.pine64.org/pinephone/ and https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/ I know there are more. Soon None games will use these so they can have phone and computer in one.

Good thing we *DO* have a choice as to whether we use an iPad or not!

The other equally good questions would be, what is it going to do for you
that it doesn't do now, if you replace the OS.... and why did you buy it in
    the first place?

Samsung and Motorola both offered docking phones as a new paradigm for
desktop computing. Samsungs was a dock with HDMI and USB, Motorola had
similar dock, but also had a "webtop", a laptop shell with keyboard,
trackpad, screen, battery and a dock for the phone. Dock it in and you have
a "laptop" with cellular networking. I think it might have been ahead of its time.

I like the idea of being able to use my phone as a computer; I have a 512 GB SD card in mine and treat it like an offsite backup of my media. And, with
an "unlimited" plan, I don't need to worry about public wifi.

Folks have been asking him these types of questions for a LONG time, but
    they never actually get answered.

Sounds like your the person it was designed for. I do have interest in it myself but wasn't that long ago I got my OnePlus8T so it will be a while before I need a new device and I really hope they have some power in them by then. Imagine you can have your BBS in your pocket.
