I tried EST for a week and hated it - and I'm in PST. I took a training
class for a week that ran 9-5 EST, and I was getting in front of the
computer at 0600 and having a "lunch" break at 0900. That's what you get
when the people scheduling classes are at UTC+1.

I knew people who worked east coast banker's hours, haven't seen much of
    that nowadays.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be one hell of an adjustment, but our notions of local time are arbitrary anyway. They've just been embedded for several hundred years.

Why is "sunrise" 6am? Why not start our "day" (sunrise) at 00:00? That makes more sense....

I just think that in our increasingly global world where people have to attend meetings in the middle of the night anyway because the scheduler set it for a time when it was daylight for themselves, it's not much of a reach to just use UTC for everything and people adjust.

I'm glad the US is finally killing Daylight Savings Time. I've thought that was stupid for years for similar reasons.

I think it's more that people thought it would make sense for the middle of the day (or noon) to be when the sun was just overhead; or in the middle of the daylight hours.

I'm glad the US is finally killing Daylight Savings Time. I've thought that was stupid for years for similar reasons.

I suspect a week isn't long enough for it to feel normal. IME it takes a few weeks for something that new and different to settle in. In my mispent youth
I had a job that required me to get up ~5 on a Saturday morning, and finish about 12-1 depending on the day.

The first weeks were painful, and I ended up throwing it in, but continued until someone else was found, by the end it was starting to feel doable, and more normal.

Neither of those makes more sense, they're both just arbitrary names... but does everyone start their day at sunrise, mine is probably close to 10 after yours that won't help a single universal time.

reach to just use UTC for everything and people adjust.

Peoples might eventually adjust.. for some, close to UTC it won't make much difference. For others at the far ends, like +10, +11 you'd be reversing daytime timing to night time timing and that would take a lot more effort.

Yes, although it would first have to also be approved by the House, which
may be a little tougher than the Senate approval. Then it would go to
the President, and I don't think he has indicated whether he's in favor,

I'd think "poTAYto" and "toMAYto" are the correct way, due to the rules of English vowels. In each word, after the 'a', there's a consonant followed by a vowel, which would make the 'a' be pronounced "ay".

I've seen this kind of thing with other words too. Years ago, there was a chat program I saw some people use called Adium. I'd pronounce it "AY-dee-um", but I'd hear some people pronounce it "add-ee-um".

Recently I saw a screenshot of some PC software (I'm not sure if it was real or photoshopped) that had a list of languages, and next to the UK flag it said "English (traditional)", and next to the US flag it said "English (simplified)".

I think "toMAYto" makes more sense, and is consistent with the pronunciation of "potato".

There's a lot of weirdness in the English language though. For instance, why does the "oo" in "foot" and "boot" sound different?

Giraffe vs Jiraffe is more interesting though, both those letters can produce the same sounds... a soft G like Germ, and a J like Jet... so in this

Giraffe vs Jiraffe is more interesting though, both those letters can produce the same sounds... a soft G like Germ, and a J like Jet... so in this instance either could work... someone just chose G for some reason.

I've always heard "giraffe" pronounced with a soft G ("jiraffe"), never with a hard G.

An alternative one that is interesting is Jog, normally considered a hard J but its a soft Y sound in its country of origin, Denmark off hand?
But not 100% sure off top of my head.

I think that's more because of the two different languages. I don't know of any instance in English where a J is pronounced like a Y.

There used to be an animated GIF that the creator made that said just that. I saw it back in the 90s and have respected (and defended) that pronunciation since.

When people argue with me about it, I remind them that it is a Proper Noun, and therefore nothing different from a person's name. Then I proceed to mispronounce their name for a while.

Back in the 90s, I said "JIF", and my friends then said that sounded silly and that I was wrong, it was "GIF" with a hard G. I then used that pronunciation from then on in, until I found this out, and realised I was right the first time.

The first weeks were painful, and I ended up throwing it in, but
continued until someone else was found, by the end it was starting to
    feel doable, and more normal.

Agreed - I did some flexible shifts in my career, and they ended up being
    very nice.

In college, I worked in the bookstore's IT department, writing code and managing a midrange computer. I worked a 7:00am to 4:00pm shift, which ended up being great - I'm a morning person, and could get an hour and a half
before people started showing up and making requests, but got home in time
    to enjoy the day.

The other shift I did was 11-7, and I got 2 hours at the end running maintenance after the bookstore closed, and no one got off their collective asses to go out until 8pm anyway back then.

Then, I'd get to sleep in, get a run along the ocean in the morning.

    Good times.

Interesting. I don't believe I've *EVER* known anyone who pronounced it
with a "soft J". Always a "hard G". This is over a 25+ year period.
