Do we have a shortwave radio echo area?

BBC has been broadcasting on 15735 from 1400-1600Z and 5875 from 2200Z to 0000Z eqach day. The broadcast is somewhat propaganda filled, as it is strictly anti-Russian and paints the Ukraine government with the brush of humility and kindness. Painting Ukraine leaders as nothing less than Saint like beings. In my experience both sides of this have been corrupt and deceitful for as long as I can remember, at least since 1991 when the USSR came apart.

Never the less, I pray for the people of Ukraine, the families are facing incredible hardships, we've already lost several amateur radio operators from the area, killed in fighting.

One Ukrainian radio amateur is a solicitor, barrister, lawyer...and he says "Nobody wants to pay a lawyer when it's faster and cheaper to pay a judge." In his opinion that is the state of the Ukraine legal system and has been for a number of years.

It's a tragic event unfolding before our eyes.

No. I don't currently have a radio capable of picking up shortwave, but I
used to enjoy listening when I was a young teen. WRNO out of New Orleans
was available on shortwave, and played rock-and-roll, back then. As this
was during the Cold War, I also enjoyed listening to Radio Moscow, like a
spy, as if they might give away some secret.

I would sometimes pick up stations where it sounded like someone was
shouting to the masses in Spanish. I had taken at least half-a-year of
Spanish by then but they talked too fast for me to make any of it out.

Shortwave now is horrible, both in the US and abroad. US is nothing but cultists, and everywhere else is China propaganda, usually for expats. But maybe a new cold war will spruce up the airwaves a bit.

One of the few shortwave shows I sometimes tune into is ReviewBrah's "Voice of The Report of the Week." I've occasionally caught an oldies radio show that's pretty good too.

Shortwave is very different now. I used to listen a lot on a home made crystal reciver I built in the 7th grade. About 1972 or 1973. Lots of fun stuff back then. Nowadays it's mostly China, although the BBC has restarted its wartime bureau and they broadcast a few hours a day to Ukraine. It's all propaganda, and probably was back in the 70's. I used to enjoy laying in bed at night and listening to latin music on my crystal set. Radio Havanna was huge, Radio Moscow, always liked listening to the "Happy Station" out of the Netherlands...good stuff back then. I think the VOA is still on the air but I'd have to check. LOADS and LOADS of doomsday preachers begging for cash.

I worked in Franfort back in the early 1990's. KETC was one of my largest customers, so I was at the capitol quite frequently. I also made it out to Bell County, and out near Pineville doing a few IT jobs here and there. Almost got crushed by a coal truck coming out of Corbin one night, he came down the mountain and didn't have any brakes. I got out of his way with half a second to spare. I reckon he made it, I didn't see him in the ditch any where.

Shortwave sure isn't what it used ot be 40 years ago. The BBC has made it interesting with their on the ground coverage in Ukraine.

You can catch them on 15735 Khz at 1400Z to 1600Z, and 5875Khz at 2200Z to 0000Z

Several years back I picked up Radio Havana from the San Francisco bay area. Cubans were apparently playing around with copper wire attached to a helium balloon as an antenna. Genius!

I should try again with my little Sony shortwave now that I've taken all of
my powerline ethernet adapters offline. Apparently powerline ends up turning your unshielded power lines into interference-creating antennas, and when I tried listening, ended up just getting static. I could barely pick out WWV.

I'm pretty sure they've already ceased operation, if not now, soon.

I am guessing it is different for the same reasons that AM radio is very different now... FM radio and the internet have changed the landscape. I wonder if those doomsday preachers have valid licenses... I assume you need
    one to broadcast shortwave?

Driving around in coal country can be tricky, although probably not as
    tricky now as back then.

I used to visit Speedway for the time trials. Enjoyed eating donuts at
Long's, and stopping at the Mug and Bun for dinner after a long day at the track. Couple of other places I used to go, that are not there anymore,
were Racer's Pizza in Brownsburg, and Jonathan Byrd's Cafeteria.

Racer's became another pizza place that was also good, but the last time I
was in Brownsburg it was gone, too. I'd stay at the Red Roof off of Crawfordsville Road, which was cheap but usually clean... I think it got
dozed for one of the Interstate projects.

That is good to know! I would have figured they were insulated enough, but they are not shielded the same as communications wiring for sure.
