It means it's more alpha than alpha. It's kind of silly really, as saying it's alpha is just a insurance policy against bugs (well it IS alpha...) because mystic 1.12 has been in "alpha" so long it's considered "stable" what to call the actual test versions? pre-alpha.

As I understand it the alpha version is the current public facing version available for download and general use from the mysticbbs.com website. You'll find that there under the downloads tab

The pre-alpha is more of the bleeding edge, latest build, could be different tomorrow when you next install it, version... the one that keeps getting stuff added to it, bugs found and fixed etx. until such time as it goes up for download on the websites download page.

The prealpha requires a bit more effort to find the install binaries as it's not so widely promoted to the casual user as to where to find it.
You can find the link as to where it is by visiting the Mystic wiki as James/g00r00 has published the URL there.

I don't use Mystic, but the releases of Mystic have been called Alpha as long as I can remember. Honestly when I see "Alpha", I feel a little discouraged, since usually I interpret "alpha" as "not ready for daily use yet".
