• Meetup with Hyjinx

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Sun Jan 23 16:02:18 2022
Well, last night I caught up with Hyjinx face to face here in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was down on a trip and we managed to catch up at a local brewery and have a beer and a bite to eat. :)

It is the first time since I started back in to BBSing in 2012/13 that I have managed to meet someone face to face... back it the 90's it seemed to be a far more common thing in Hamilton (the city I was living in at the time) but then again there were way more local BBS running then and it was easier to get together with folks.

It was great to meet Al and also a a number of new faces (some local, some not) who were all connected by shared mutual interests in either retro computing, BBSing, gaming etc. or a combo of all.

This hobby is very much a global thing these days and most folks I know quite well for a number of years don't live in New Zealand so it was nice to manage to catch up with one of the few that I have come into contact with via BBSing and fsxNet who do live in the same country.

I hope you may be lucky enough to have the same thing happen to you down the track too and bump in to someone who you have enjoyed chatting with in echomail.

    Best, Paul

So I'm fortunate enough that I travel with work, so I'm no stranger to NZ. (I love Welli - except for Welli's weather - it would be my next place to live, if the temp was about 5-10 degrees warmer ;)

I was hoping to get a trip down to Dunedin to say hi - but COVID has put a dampner on that.

Now, I'm looking for a new job role, and the new one may not include as much travel as the old one :( But if I can wing it, I'll let you know :)

The travel does sound nice, it's been some years since I had any role like that, but now our family is settled in Dunedin I don't really expect to be up and moving / relocating again around the country anytime soon. I've grown quite fond of Dunedin and it's the place I have lived the longest in which when I think about it is rather freaky :)

Bummer hummer... it would be nice to meet sometime if the stars line up.

Thanks :) We'll hopefully one day we might just pull it off :)

Yeah, think we're overdue, actually. Somewhere in central Melbourne would be the logical place - fairly central and easily reached by public and private transport would be the go.

I'd have one of the longer trips in, so it doesn't particularly favour me, just makes sense to hold it there.

Hmm, across which road (it's on a corner :P ). 2 constraints for me:

    1. NOT a bar/pub - I don't drink alcohol or sugary soft drink.

    2. Given the current covid situation, outdoors (and even without covid, my autitory processing will thank you for it).

Stay on the train, and get out at Flinders Street. There are a heap of bar/cafe's nearby ie: southgate.

As long as there's outdoors dining without too many crowds. :) If it's after Easter, running the covid gauntless is more likely. Right now, a week's iso will affect something significant just about every week. I missed the Midsumma carnival a week ago, because I didn't want to risk a week's iso, which would have put me out of last weekend's Victorian Country championships (won 6 medals from 6 events). :)

I don't know Melbourne well enough to put forward more!

You mean change trains. V/Line trains terminate at Southern Cross. That along with case numbers will determine if that's a deal breaker. :) But I could always walk, which would avoid the extra exposure of another train load and Flinders Street (which has more confined spaces than Southern Cross).
