I want to get a .bbs domain for my BBS.

I've found out that they are free, and to get one you have to contact a
certain person. I contacted the person, and he said:

"Let me know what domain you want and the appropriate a or cname."

My understanding is that a cname maps one domain to another - that doesn't sound like something I want; or do I have that wrong?

And my understand is that an A record maps a domain to an IP address - that doesn't sound like it's for me either, because I have a VPS but I don't have
    a unique IP address.

I explained that to him, and he said "You will need to have a Name Server, Address, or Alias." I then gave him the nameservers for Dreamhost, which is where I plan to host the domain. However, I don't think that's all he needs.
I think I'm annoying the guy with my lack of understanding of things.

Does this make sense to anyone? Do you see what he needs that I haven't given him? I haven't heard back from him, so I'm assuming the nameservers were not sufficient info to get this happening.

    Thanks for any tips!

Shadowscope.com is hosted offsite, through Livingdot. I map
bbs.shadowscope.com using CNAME to my dynamic dns name, shadowscope.noip.us, which resolves to my BBS.

But if you had a static IP then you wouldn't need the CNAME, right?

Thanks for this explanation. I'll admit, it's been explained to me
before but went over my head. I'm going to work on this..

    You're welcome!

I'm also interested in a .BBS TLD.

I'll try to contact you at your BBS with the guy's email address.
