• IPCONFIG/ALL, DNS, DHCP

From Ed Vance@1:2320/105 to All on Fri May 22 22:08:00 2020
    Howdy!

Ages ago I learned about using IPCONFIG/ALL to see Network Settings.

Sometime later I started Saving the Setup it showed.

Back then there was a Entry in the "Primary DNS Suffix" line.

For a long time recently I've noticed the Entry is BLANK just like Ed's Head.

In IPCONFIG/ALL reports the Entry for DHCP Enabled says "NO" now.

Does anyone have the URL of a Website I can go to, for learning (ALL) about using IPCONFIG/ALL to properly set up the DNS and DHCP Settings?

I already looked at the Wikipedia articles about DNS and DHCP, and I recently saw some Chat at Ask Woody ( askwoody.com ).

Reading what Leo Notenboom ( askleo.com ) has to say about the Topic is on
    my ROUNDTUIT List.

Thanks for reading, and Appreciate anyone trying to help me with this.

After Midnight I learned that Rain and Thunderstorms will start up in
my area (Southern Indiana, METRO Louisville, KY).

I will check for a QWK in between Storms, so I might not get right back to
    You with any Comments.

    Thanks a lot! 73 de Ed W9ODR . .

Firstly, do you understand what DNS is used for? If you area able to resolve hostnames to IP address (e.g. ping "yahoo.com" instead of an IP address), then DNS is working - regardless of what "ipconfig" is reporting. It sounds like you maybe worrying about something that isn't an actual problem.

Secondly, you may have multiple network interfaces and you only need DNS to be working for one of them in order to resolve hostnames. So it's perfectly reasonable and expected that some of your network interfaces may have no associated DNS servers.

Thirdly, in the latest versions of Windows, ipconfig just reports "DNS Servers", not "Primary DNS Server" or "Secondary DNS Server", e.g.:

    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8
