    Personally, I have not issues with BBS ads being posted in a one liners section of a BBS. I often find myself visitng other boards when I see their addresses posted in such as place.

    Someone just replaced my stale one-liner pointing to my FB page with a
    one-line ad for their BBS, and I thought "Way to go!"

    I think ANSI display speed drove the modem speed wars more than raw
    transfer rates. Nothing like watching 10 screens' worth of ANSI at 9600 bps because your off-brand modem wouldn't negotiate a decent connection or you
    were pushing bits through a crappy UART. :)
