• Testing putty over SSH..

    Hello All,

Being able to read and write more UTF-8 characters using putty on Windows SSH'ing over to my Golded machine seemed like a good idea. So far things are looking pretty good.

Björn, can you read this? :)

It's actually a bit nicer to use a GUI program with Golded, as I was missing out on /decent/ copy/paste functionality.

    Yes.

    ... "Ýõ ÷ýðÎ. ï ÷ôõÁÌ ÂþûÌúþ ÀðñþÂðÎ."

I cannot read this in Golded, but I can read it with Thunderbird.

Lets see how it shows as quoted.

Neither can I, but I could read the original with vi as external editor in Golded.

    Not good..

    But that looks OK.

How does the Dutch concatenated "ij" in my origin look at your end?

I have no problem with copy and paste, but I do have a problem with the fact that Golded is internally limited to an 8 bit character set. I use the win32 version of Vi as external editor. But that can only be invoked when answering a message.

Did you find another trick that involves Putty?

Not really. A linux console is only limited to about 512 characters with a good UTF-8 font. Now that I'm using Putty in Windows to SSH to my linux machine, I get to see a lot more characters. Golded display's some things okay, like your origin line, but once you get into cyrillic or really anything outside of some dots or ticks over o's and e's, Golded fails miserably.

If I want to see anything that Golded doesn't display (even if I don't actually reply to the message), I'll reply to it anyway just to see it the way it should look. Then I can just ":q!" and abort the message.

Seems to look as it should in Golded most of the time. But my tagline, for example, not even close. :)

It looks ok in Thunderbird, but not in Golded.

Makes sense. Golded uses an 8 bit character set internally. There is no 8 bit character set that includedes the concatenated ij (ij). So no way to disply it in Golded.

It is a bit of a pet project of me. In The Dutch alfabet the ij is the 25th letter of the alfabet, taking the place of the y which is a foreign character. On old Dutch typewriters the ij had its own key. One key, so one letter. On imported typewriters there was no IJ but the Y instead. So to type an ij, the combination IJ was used. The concataned ij disappered in the computer age. No ij on any computer keyboard. And not in any of the code pages and the ISO caharacter sets.

But low and behold, it re-appeared in unicode as code point U+0133 for lower case and U+0132 for upper case. Oddly enough its use is not recommended. Recommended is the use of the digraph ij. But.. I am hard headed. I advocate using it anyway. I had to do some effort to be able to type it. I wrote a Fidonews article how to enter characters by using the hexadecimel code point.

So... Thunderbird displays it correctly. It seems most unicode capable applications do. At least under Windows.

    Cheers, Michiel

Displays fine in Golded here. Not sure why, but it does.

It displays ok in my golded on linus either directly on the linux box terminal, or through a putty terminal. But it doesn't in GoldED on windows...
