Quick link check to make sure it's hooked up properly.

Oh, and.. I can still type Björn as well as Boël and they should be okay to keep this message on topic in here. :)

    Looks like your linked.

Those must be UTF-8. I see the first one at times but I have never seen the second one before. With this editor I can at least type Bjrn. :)

Since you're using Synchronet, why not try using nano or vim as your external editor? You won't be able to read them via the BBS, but you will see them the way they were meant to be seen once you enter a UTF-8 capable editor. If you do decide to use one of those, make sure to use either of them in restricted mode if you decide to offer it as a choice to your users, otherwise they'll be able to load/edit other documents besides the one currently open.

    Nick

It doesn't look good on my screen because it is not encoded in UTF-8 but in CP437 instead. You still need to do some tinkering to get your system UTF-8 compatible...

    No CHRS kludge...

No there isn't. Mystic doesn't add that either. It there a complication in that that makes it difficult for a BBS to add that kludge correctly?

It doesn't look good on my screen because it is not encoded in UTF-8 but in CP437 instead. You still need to do some tinkering to get your system UTF-8 compatible...

I still use CP437 here because the BBS software I use seems to depend on it. I have used a UTF-8 terminal at times just to see how it goes. I know that MBSE and Mystic can output in UTF-8 but they both still use CP437 or maybe LATIN-1 internaly as far as I know.

I need to figure out what keywords I need for golded to use UTF-8 properly and then I'll try it again. I suppose I will still have trouble with Bjrn's name on my keyboard though.

I'm not sure how the BBS would handle posts if I was to run it from a UTF-8 console. Maybe I should try and see what happens.

Is anyone running their BBS from a UTF-8 console? Is that doable or are there problems?

You and Björn have been sending me oddball things from echos that were never areafixed here also. I hooked this one directly up to Michiel via areafix and just assumed you had already had me setup, or soon would, so I added you two as links to stay ahead of the game. :)

It looks to be mentioned here: https://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v2.6/faw.html#3.9b
    And low and behold: https://nano-editor.org/dist/win32-support/

Looks like there's a source for use with cygwin.

.. though I had only mentioned these because it looked to me (by way of his tearline) like the original poster's system was running Linux.

Have you tried switching the CP437/UTF-8 option in Mystic's configuration at all? I don't recall how far along that was.

I need to figure out what keywords I need for golded to use UTF-8
properly and then I'll try it again. I suppose I will still have
trouble with Bjrn's name on my keyboard though.

You can translate a bunch of tables TO UTF-8, but not back. Then again, if you're posting in UTF-8 why would you want to break it back down to something less widely used, so instead, I force my export to UTF-8 and created a blank conversion table called utf8_utf8.chs. This is only to get Golded to send out the proper CHRS kludge (as noted in this message).

I'm not sure how the BBS would handle posts if I was to run it from a UTF-8 console. Maybe I should try and see what happens.

I doubt you'd break anything. Mystic actually has a UTF-8 setting, but I seem to recall it only handling some characters, while trying to keep ANSI compatibility.

Is anyone running their BBS from a UTF-8 console? Is that doable or
    are there problems?

I run Synchronet as a daemon, and always have a UTF-8 console without any problems. But I'm not sure if that's what you mean or not.

    Nick

All I can say is that my Golded does not display your message correctly because I have configured it to assume the default encoding for this area is UTF-8. Meaning that when a CHRS kludge is present it will use that to determine the encoding and assume UTF-8 when it is absent.

It is a kludge... Actually when there is no CHRS kludge the "default default" is plain ASCII. A message containing more than just plain 7 bit ASCII /should/ have a CHRS kludge. But what do you do when there is no CHRS kludge and there are non ASCII characters anyway? I assume UTF-8 for this area and CP850 for all others.

It doesn't look good on my screen because it is not encoded in
UTF-8 but in CP437 instead. You still need to do some tinkering to

Actually that is DOS think. Windows uses UTF internally. So does *nix for a while.

I need to figure out what keywords I need for golded to use UTF-8
properly and then I'll try it again. I suppose I will still have
trouble with BjÔrn's name on my keyboard though.

It is not the keyboard, it is the keyboard driver. All keyboard are basically the same under the hood. The labeling may be different. I use a keyboard with the standard US international labeling. I have added extra labels for the Cyrillic characters. The umlauts and accents I make with the "dead key method". The Dutch keyboard driver makes the keys for the single and double quotes, the circumflex and the tilde, dead keys on the first stoke. So to type the o umlaut in Björn's name, I first press the key for the double quote followed by the o. To type the accented e in André, I type the key for the singe quote followed by the e. To type the double or single quote itself, I press that key twice. It gets used to quickly.

    Cheers, Michiel
