Boy I've got a friend who is watching and and says it's very star
trek. Since I'm not I can't agree or disagree with you.

If I remember from the first episode Discovery happens between
Enterpise and TOS. So they could be referencing things and people in
the the Enterprise series. Wonder if there will be a USS Tripp to
honor Tripp who died in the series.

It's set 10 years before TOS. There's a reference to the Enterprise which was
in service at the time (under Captain Christopher Pike). Not many other things have been referenced.

Saw that they will do a Mudd episode just wonder if they will "age"
the characters right. You could also see the TOS charaters in their
early years in Starflet or in the Academy.

There were two episodes containing Mudd. Both were... interesting. Rainn Wilson (he played Dwight Schrute in The Office) plays the character in Discovery, there are a few pictures online where you can compare Wilson's Mudd to TOS's Roger C. Carmel's Mudd. There's a definite resemblance.

Done right it could be a boone to ST arc. Done wrong a disaster. It
wll be an intesting few years.

I'll avoid spoilers and just say that it wasn't bad. I enjoyed it.

Take a look at Youtube: At the latest ComicCon they've released a VERY interesting trailer which might reveal a lot about the story of this series...

Do not like what they've done to the klingons, not one bit. This is supposed to take place after Enterprise, so they should have left the klingons alone since the ones we saw in Enterprise were the same as
we've come to know from TNG and the other shows.

That's causing a lot of debate around. It seems that these guys will have an explanation, just like the ones regarding the forehead ridges (which at
the end were a byproduct of the Augment virus). We will have to wait and see.

The new ship looks like the stole parts from an old Klingon ship.

Believe it or not, the USS Shenzou looks like an upgraded Enterprise-clas ship, while the USS Discovery had its design taken from a scrapped series called Star Trek Phase II.

I'm also not going to pay another service in order to watch it. I
think CBS is making a majorly bad decision by not airing it on regular
TV, and I'm afraid it will seriously hurt the franchise.

That's what will be, I believe, the major "shot in the foot" that CBS is doing now. For instance, I live in Brazil, and the series will be made available immediately over Netflix, therefore I won't have to pay extra to have
it (as I pay Netflix already)

Well I'm surprised that they ordered a second season. Really I thought that it would not "fly" because the Star Trek fans would not pay CBS to see it on their paid service. (Think they call it All Access). I'm wating for Netflix to pick it up there cause I can get it from them. I figured the ST clubs would DVR or recoord it and swap it among themselves rather than pay to watch it.

I'd like to know actual numbers on how many new subscriptions CBS got, and then how many will stick around after the season ends. I'm debating cancelling my CBS All Access pass for the month of December, and picking it back up when the second half of Season 1 starts.

Consider yourself told. The Orville is pretty much a slightly less
serious version of Star Trek... or to be more accurate, it is still a
serious show... there is danger... there is drama (people die and we're
all pretty said about it). But some of the characters are smartasses and
some are jackasses throughout it all.

One specific episode that comes to mind... they had to infiltrate an
enemy vessel so they could learn about their religion (they're fanatics)
so they could hopefully find some way to connect on a common level...
only to discover they were about to unleash a weapon of mass destruction
    on an innocent farming colony.

It was tense... it was serious... it was going to be a bad end for them
if they got caught... but the name of their "god" was Avis... and one
character couldn't help but crack a string of jokes about how their god
was named after the rental car company.

I'd recommend watching a few episodes.

Since Roddenberry featured the first interracial kiss on American TV, I suspect he would have had no problem with openly gay affections.

I tend to agree. Each of the series (TOS, TNG, etc) reflects TV and society
as a whole at the time it aired, sometimes on the leading edges. Profanity was not as accepted on television as it is now, thus we didn't see much of it in prior shows.

I just finished watching the first two seasons of Star Trek DIscovery
    on DVD from Netflix.

I forgot netflix still delivers DVD. We cancelled the streaming service
about two years ago and we're happy about it.

It is NOT Gene Roddenberry's Trek! I do not think that he would have approved of this series. First of all for the language. In all of
Trek I only remember one out and out cuss when the ship was crashing
into the planet Data said "Oh Shit!" This one has out and out swearing including the "F" word. Also open gay kissing. The suggestion of "gaity" is OK but to have two male or female character kiss on screen
is a no-no. Also there were aliens in this series that were never seen again in all of Trek. The whole Klingon war thing in the first season
was wrong. This Trek was supposed to be a bridge between Enterprise
with Archer and TOS with Kirk. The war with the Klingons was over and
we were in a truce, a cold war. Remember The Trouble With Tribbles?
That was the way we were with the Klingons. The Klingon makeup and laanguae was all wrong. The Klingon home planet was wrong. The home planet in Trek was "Kling" not Kronos. Kronos came later in the
series. Finally the out and out violence. Murder by the fedration?
I think not. They made Mudd an out and out criminal that should have been given the death sentence or at least a life sentence. They made
him a murder rather than just a scrondrel.

Don't forget Star Trek IV. "Why don't you watch where you're going you dumbass!" "Well a double-dumbass on you!!!"

Then the following conversation on colorful metaphors. Great movie that way.

Spock, who was a large part of season two never had a step-sister. He
had a half brother who was never mentioned. I saw only three
references to TOS one was Mudd and the other whas when Pike picked up
the future Spike and saw himself disfigured, also Vena and the
Talosians were in the mix. They tried to get back to Trek cannon in
the last two scenes in Part II of Sweet Sorrow when they had a scene on the bridge of the Entrprise as it appease, (modernly), when Pike was Captain and Spock was the Lt. Science Officer.

I've seen some scene clips on youtube and Spock smiles too much. Pissed me
off. Not sure what that's about.

THey tried to write off all that happened over the two years by sending the Discovery and her crew into the future. For anyone left they were resticted "under penalty of death" of every taking or mentioning
Discovery and the events that happened in the first two seasons. Even Sarek and Amanda were self quarrentined from talking about it calling
them "Ambasadors To the Federation." Sarek was an Ambasador, Amanda
    never was.

Was this a two year effort with no more seasons of Discovery? How do
you have a season 3 when Discovery and all her crew is dead or gone?

Well I'm waiting for "Picard" to come out on DVD. A friend says it is
very good and is "good Trek". Though I do have a disagrement that Data was blown to smithereens in the last movie, but he said that Data was reconstruced from DNA taken when they tried to disassemble him when
Picard fought to call him sentient. We'll see about that one.

I'm hearing the Picard show is all about Stewart saying 'F U' to Trump.
Oh, gawd, I really crave star trek as I knew it growing up.
