• nslookup failure

    From Fr333n3rgy@1:103/705 to Digital Man on Tue Jan 18 21:58:30 2022
    Is it normal for nslookup to fail for fxnet?

    nslookup f100.n1.z21.fxnet.nz

    ** server can't find f100.n1.z21.fxnet.nz NXDOMAIN

    It seems when I try to send a netmail out it synchronet chokes because the lookup fails ...

    Yes, fsxNet does not support DNS-based node look-ups.

    It seems when I try to send a netmail out it synchronet chokes because the lookup fails ...

    The init-fidonet.js script (you said you ran that, right?) should have added something like the following to your ctrl/sbbsecho.ini file automatically:

    [node:21:1/100@fsxnet]
    Name = Paul Hayton (Avon)
    Comment = fsxNet Hub
    ...
    GroupHub = fsxNet
    BinkpHost = agency.bbs.nz
    BinkpPort = 24556

    Did it not do that?

    That "BinkpHost" setting would cause the mailer (BinkIT, most likely) to contact to *that* hostname and not f100.n1.z21.fxnet.nz, when attempting to perform a BinkP connection with 21:1/100.

    the proper domain is fsxnet ;)

    but i note that apparenetly they are not doing the fnz domain lookups any more... they used to... i don't know when or why they stopped...

    /me heads off to make some configuration changes to remove this option :(

    Okay, good, so the problem was that you mistyped a netmail address as 21:100/1 instead of 21:1/100?

    i hadn't heard anything, either, but i'm not in fsxnet and haven't really been paying attention to my BBS in the last year or two for various reasons... i saw DM mentioned it the other day and my tests doing fnz conversion of random fsxnet addresses and attempting to look them up on fsxnet.nz failed... eg: the following lookup for 21:1/100@fsxnet

    $ nslookup f100.n1.z21.fsxnet.nz
    Server: 192.168.42.1
    Address: 192.168.42.1#53

    ** server can't find f100.n1.z21.fsxnet.nz: NXDOMAIN

    i don't find anything obvious in the HISTORY.TXT file about discontinuing the fnz conversion lookups, either... not a big deal, though... i simply removed the entry from my binkd-networks.conf file so my binkd won't attempt fnz conversions and lookups for any fsxnet systems...

    I tried the same thing, got the same result. Double checked against my own FTN subdomain, which works, just to eliminate user error as a probable cause. :)
