• Gating QWK/FTN: Area names

From acn@1:103/705 to All on Sun Apr 4 20:00:44 2021
    Hi,

I'm gating the areas for WeedNet between the QWK and FTN network world.
The areas have some "generic" names, eg. "General".

Is it possible to have a different FTN echo name, eg. "Weed_General", but keep the QWK networking intact?
So my FTN downlinks would add it in Areafix using "+WEED_GENERAL" but the QWK network name stays the same?

The settings for "General" in scfg are:
    Long Name General
    Short Name General
    QWK Name GENERAL
    Internal Code WEEDNET_GENERAL

I've created a echolist file which contains for this area the line:
    General General

    Which name should I change?

    Thank you!

    Anna

QWK networking doesn't use the conference (sub-board) name - that's really just for QWK offline readers.

The settings for "General" in scfg are:
    Long Name General
    Short Name General
    QWK Name GENERAL
    Internal Code WEEDNET_GENERAL

I've created a echolist file which contains for this area the line:

The AreaTags (a.k.a. echo tags) are configured/controlled in your Area File (e.g. areas.bbs) file, not SCFG. But when using "Automatically Add New Subs to Area List" set to "List Only" in echocfg or when exporting a message group from SCFG to an area file, the Newsgroup Name is used (if non-blank) or else the Short Name is used.

    Hi dm,

I'm sorry that I don't understand what you want to tell me with this sentence. Is the "conference (sub-board) name" the Long Name and Short Name settings in SCFG?

    Which name should I change?

At the moment, I have set "Automatically Add New Subs" to "List/File".
But still it feels complicated every time I add new echos via Areafix requests from a uplink :)

But to sum up my question:
If I understood you correctly, I can set the "Newsgroup Name" in SCFG and this will then be the name which is written to "areas.bbs" when I use "Export Areas" in SCFG to create a new areas.bbs?
And I can use "Export Areas" to create a new EchoList file -- and then I have different FTN and QWK names?

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Anna

The "QWK Name" is called the "Conference name" in QWK specs. It's not used or relevant in QWK networking.

    Which name should I change?

If you don't have any downlinks, you could try running SBBSecho without an area file at all - by setting that option to just "List". You may find that less complicated.

But to sum up my question:

    Correct.

And I can use "Export Areas" to create a new EchoList file -- and then I have different FTN and QWK names?

QWK Names aren't written to echolists, so I'm not sure what you're asking here. Additionally, you probably don't need to export to an EchoList file unless you're running your own FTN othernet. The EchoLists provided by the network coordinator are all you should require - and with Area Manager (areafix) requests working from your uplink, you really don't need an echolist either.

I do have downlinks - as I wrote in my first message, I'm the gateway for an othernet (WeedNet) between the QWK and FTN world.
Besides, I use a point software (OpenXP) for reading/writing messages because of the much much higher comfort over reading in the BBS.

If I understood you correctly, I can set the "Newsgroup Name" in SCFG and this will then be the name which is written to "areas.bbs" when I use "Export Areas" in SCFG to create a new areas.bbs?
    Correct.

Okay, thank you! It seems to work :)

And I can use "Export Areas" to create a new EchoList file -- and then I have different FTN and QWK names?
QWK Names aren't written to echolists, so I'm not sure what you're asking here.

I've tried it and got an echolist file which contains eg.:
    "WEED_GENERAL General"
The first one is the FTN echo name and the second one is ... another one :) I called it the QWK name, but this might be the wrong identifier.

Additionally, you probably don't need to export to an EchoList file unless you're running your own FTN othernet.

Which I do. It's the FTN part of WeedNet, network ID 420 :)
And I use EchoLists for my point, which gets FidoNet, fsxNet, tqwNet, SciNet, SFNet, BBSnet and WeedNet.
To not confuse myself with AreaFix lists, I use EchoLists. And I've asked you before how to use them :)

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Anna
