• Configuring Areafix for several networks and points

From acn@1:103/705 to All on Mon Jan 11 11:43:46 2021
    Hi,

I've configured several FTN networks in my BBS and mostly use OpenXP as a point.

There is one configuration point that I don't understand at the moment, and that is how to tell Areafix that eg. when writing to "Areafix@77:2/108" only the areas from the message group "SciNet" should be listed (and available). (The same would apply to Filefix@77:2/108, it also should only output file areas from the SciNet Library)

    How can I configure this?

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Anna

For message Areas set in echocfg -> Echomail Settings -> Allow Nodes to Add Areas from Area File to no.

Then you need to create echolists in echocfg -> EchoLists, and give nodes access to those echolists as appropriate. Depending on your setup that might be one or several echolists.

I am not sure how to go about that with Filefix. There is a new Filefix robot but I haven't looked at it yet.

    Hallo Al,

    thank you for your answer!

Then you need to create echolists in echocfg -> EchoLists, and give nodes access to those echolists as appropriate. Depending on your setup that might be one or several echolists.

So I have to create a file for every network and attach these files to the nodes?
And every time some echos in a network change (which does not happen very often, I know), I have to re-export the list?
    Okay :)

It would be a feature request to just select a message group instead of a EchoList file in echocfg for each node, the echolist could then be read on-the-fly...

I am not sure how to go about that with Filefix. There is a new Filefix robot but I haven't looked at it yet.

    Okay, thank you.

So I have to create a file for every network and attach these files to the nodes?

Yes. Only nodes that feed others need to worry about any of this.

And every time some echos in a network change (which does not happen very often, I know), I have to re-export the list?

Yes, once those files exist you just need to keep them updated since they are the list of areas nodes have access to, so they need to be accurate.

It would be a feature request to just select a message group instead of a EchoList file in echocfg for each node, the echolist could then be read on-the-fly...

I suppose there might be an easier way. There are no security levels or flags in echocfg so this is the only way I know to do it.

Access to echolists (for areafix operations) is granted based on the source address, not the destination address.

I see there are other responses to your inquiry which clarify how that works. --

You should already have an echolist for every network. You shouldn't have to create it.

    Okay :)

More likely, you get a copy of the echolist distributed to you automatically via FDN (hatch) already.

There are "Keys" in echocfg which control access to echolists.

Yes, when I say security levels and flags I mean that in the way we have security levels and flags for BBS users. When folks have been using another tosser they may have been using that for node configuration but it isn't present in SBBSecho's configuration.

SBBSecho accomplishes the same thing with echolists by granting keys to nodes to access echolists of areas.

Yeah, SBBSecho keys are the same concept as flags, just longer (more than one character). :-)

    Hi,

You should already have an echolist for every network. You shouldn't have to create it.

    Well, that depends... :)
For example, I did not subscribe to all FidoNet echos at my boss node, so I used the "badareas.lst" way of creating the echos there.

More likely, you get a copy of the echolist distributed to you automatically via FDN (hatch) already.

Not really, as the echolists normally are included in the InfoPacks and are not hatched as individual files - or I did not see it.

But now I have an idea on how to do it, thank you!

    Anna

That may just because they change so rarely that the NC for that network has not posted an update in a long time.

This is very prone of older networks like FIDO, WWIVnet, and Vnet. Younger networks are more likely to be adding new echoes a mot more often.
