Nicely done! I'm still putzing around with similar ideas, although I
think I'm probably not gonna use the Wyse... Might go with a dedicated
SFF computer with a serial port, running MSDOS on bare metal. :-) Fun
    stuff! Congrats!

These wyse units I've been playing with are small and don't use much juice. They're also not very powerful, so I thought this was a good use for one! I could do what I'm doing in a VM but like you, it's not the same if it's not on bare metal!
I did install MS-DOS on this at first... then FreeDOS... and it ran the BBS just fine, except being DOS there was no multitasking. Currently I'm actually running Debian linux on it and running the BBS in Dosemu. Now, I know someone is going to balk at that saying "That ain't Retro!" and they are 100% absolutely... WRONG!!! Dosemu was initially released in 1992 and when I dropped down to just a single node in 1998 I ran my BBS on linux using Dosemu. So it not only is retro... it's how I did it in 1998 and 1999!!
Anyway... I'm having a lot of fun with it, and in the end, I think that's what matters.

Nice! :) What is a Wyse?

Wyse (Wyse Technology) was started in the early 80's and are best known (to me anyway) for making dumb terminals. Dumb Terminals evolved over the years into Thin (and zero) Clients. If you have no idea what that is, you've probably seen them in doctors offices and such. Tiny little computers... that don't do much more than provide a terminal to run applications which are stored and run on another computer.
The ones I have are Wyse Cx0's. I paid $11 each off ebay, then another $8.99 for a larger flash hard drive. So for $20.99 (total cost, includes shipping & taxes) I have cute little computers that use next to no electricity that I've been having a blast playing with.

I'd love to have an old wyse dumb terminal... an old WY-50 or WY-60, if Santa is reading this. :) It'd only be right that Wyse Guy of Wyse Guy BBS do his BBS'ing from one.... Just saying!

I thought it was something I had heard of but couldn't place it. Back when
I worked at a library, and then again 20+ years ago when I first started
this job, we had dumb terminals so I am familiar. Not as familiar with the thin clients but I know what they are.

Yeah, I have some nostalgic feelings for them... I like the way the
terminal would click when you were typing on them... but I don't miss how
easy it was to lock one up. It made a lot of clicking when you did that. :)

So far I've had MS-DOS 6.22, FreeDOS 1.3, Windows XP (Tiny XP), Windows 7 (Tiny7), and Debian 11 on them. Windows 7 is really pushing it.

I am a DOS or Debian type person. I would not likely be trying to run
Windows on one, unless I was looking to set something up to install Simcity 3000 on. :)
