I'm a life member of the Monticello Railway Museum (which was known as
the Monticello & Sangamon Valley Railway Historical Society whe I joined).

a CN FPA4 and an ALCO RS-3.

Last trip amongst many others I managed to catch the Beech Mountain RR

My favourite Railfan thing to do in my advanced years is the "dinner
trains" .... often pulled by steam. Like the "Flamingo" 3 hour dinner
trip behind an ex-L&N 4-6-2 Pacific. Or just to the south a few miles
My Old Kentucky Dinner Train in Bardstown. After touring the odd whiskey distiller (Bardstown is a hub for bourbon) jump on the R.J. Corman RR
for a two hour trip and a gourmet lunch. They also offer some special
evening deals - like a bourbon trip and a "Murder Mystery" trip. The
Corman RR is definitely a short line having 30 miles of track and is a
working railroad providing freight service in addition to the groceries.

If you're going to Florida for Dizzy World - have you considered the
"Auto Train"? Board you and your tribe w/auto in Lorton, VA (Washington
D.C. area) and ride the 18 hours to Orlando. Get the kids worn out with
Mickey Mouse then railfan on the way home.

They only run one route - Lorton VA to Sanford/Orlando FL. They used to
have a route from Louisville, Ky to Sanford/Orlando - but that is just
a fond memory.

According to their web site: "Factory-model standard vehicles, extended vehicles (trucks, vans and 3-row SUVs) and two-wheel motorcycles are
accepted on the Auto Train. No dual wheel vehicles, gull wings or
scissor doors will be accepted."

Going to be honest i'm browsing / using FIDONET on a 486 laptop with no ethernet or tcp/ip, just a dial up modem... on a BBS

i'll look it up but I wanted an approximate cost anyway :) it's not really an advantage to go to VA then take auto train to florida.. probably add to the journey time

i75 route i did once... its' OK - notas many shortlines as there are on my preferred route. I prefer 90/79/19/77/81/77/26/95.

there's a ton of shortlines on the other route and I still hacven't got them all after 7 trips.

Unless you're moving huge files or doing graphics intensive browser
pages dial-up is livable. And while you're on-line no telemarketers
can call you.

than driving time --- once you get to the start point.
