• Operation Lone Star

From Jeff Thiele@1:387/26 to All on Sun Oct 9 11:42:47 2022
In March 2021, two months after Biden became president, Texas governor Greg Abbott announced "Operation Lone Star," whose goal is to "stop this revolving door and deter others considering entering illegally."

    Operation Lone Star includes:
    * building a wall, of which 900 feet have been built so far,
    * sending thousands of National Guard troops and state police to patrol the
    border,
    * arresting and jailing migrants on state criminal charges,
    * spending millions on bus tickets to send migrants to other cities,
sometimes lying to them about the destination,
    * nearly shutting down international trade to Mexico for a few days while
increased inspections of commercial trucks were performed, and
    * a $4 billion budget, which presumably does not include the costs of the
wall, which average $20 million per mile.

So how is Operation Lone Star doing?

In March 2021, the Border Patrol logged 109,456 encounters, and in August
    2022, 116,976 encounters were logged.

Abbott blames these numbers on Biden's border policies but in fact, the
courts have kept most of Trump's border policies in place until fairly recently.

It sounds like it was an excellent plan for this worst-case scenario that Abbott was forced to deal with.

Changes in US border policy are promptly reported by the media. "The USA has a Democrat president! He changed the policy! No more sleeping in Mexico! The
    time to go is now!"

    It flopped miserably.

Changes in US border policy are promptly reported by the media. "The USA has a Democrat president! He changed the policy! No more sleeping in Mexico! The time to go is now!"

Except that the border policy didn't change right away, did it? The courts
kept most of the Trump policies in place until relatively recently, 18 months on, didn't they?

You live in Texas do you not? It would be very interesting to hear how your neighbors feel about your philosophy. I think you might be a little
outnumbered with most of the people in Texas.

The majority of them probably support Abbott's failure of an immigration disincentive, but that's irrelevant. It's still a failure, and an expensive
    one at that.

Except I think he lives in or near Austin, which might as well be in
Northern Illinois, the NE US, or on the West Coast.

You're trying too hard to defend Joe. He changed border policies very quickly after being elected. We've talked about it. "Most" is a leftist term that gets used improperly by leftists "most" of the time.

He tried to, but the courts delayed the changes. Even you must be aware of that.

No, it isn't. "Most" means "more than half, but not all."

It's not my word choice that's the problem; it's that you're wrong.

Saying "all" is generalizing, and is very dangerous as well as easy to
disprove if just one exception can be found. And that's why I think you're frustrated by my use of the word "most:" It allows for exceptions and so
cannot be disproven by a single exception. You have no cheap defense against that because the facts are not on your side.
