• Listing BBS on bbs.geek.nz

From Paul Hayton@3:770/1 to All on Tue Sep 30 20:58:54 2014
    Hey all,

I asked Spiro about this already but can you let me know if you are happy to have your bbs listed in a New Zealand directory of BBS's contactable via
    Telnet or dialup.

I plan to add a dialling directory to bbs.geek.nz soon, folks will be able to use the website to login to BBS's that are listed there, with the click of a mouse.

I'm not sure if anyone does dialup in NZ.

Speaking for myself, I don't have a landline any more, so wouldn't be able to call one. I suspect fewer and fewer people have them these days as the cost of having a cellphone is the same or less.

I'm not aware of any BBS in NZ that offer both Telnet and Dialup.

There's a dial up in Christchurch that's down at the moment but that's the
    only one I know of.

I must admit, I have no love for phones of any kind. My love for the BBSs was in the software and the message boards, and the lo-tech interface. :)

I know some old BBSers who were more into it for the phones, and have no interest in telnet BBSs. It's always interesting to see the same technology spinning people's wheels differently.

I'm mostly the same although I recall the buzz of upgrading from 14.4 to 28.8 to 33.6 to 56k - woot!

I'd be prepared to buy the amiga 1200 off you. I don't have an ST(E) or a 486. I do have a Celeron which I have built a memory stick that boots FreeDOS and has a TCP/IP stack. I went with the memory stick because I couldn't find a working IDE hard drive. :)

If you're after a 486 specifically, I can't help, but if you want one of these celerons to run win 3.1/dos on, then that I can provide.

If I find someone with an old 486, I'll try and grab it. Plus we'll need an ISA/EISA network card. I can't remember if PCI was introduced in the 486 days or with the Pentiums. Probably the bigger issue will be finding appropriate network card drivers for TCP/IP. In those days, Lantastic and IPX/SPX were
    more common.

But I do remember the original Xtra and iHug CDs used to come with software to connect Windows 3.1 to the net via dialup, so maybe they had DOS IP stacks on them.

Anybody got one of those CDs lying around?

I worked at both Xtra and iHug in those days, but I didn't keep any of that stuff. :(

I might have to drive up there and bribe you with cash. Next couple of months I'm going to be broke, but when things get sorted, I will send you a message and see if you've still got it and whether you've changed your mind about parting with it. :)

Trademe has that market segment locked up pretty tight.

Although, I wouldn't be offended by people selling vintage gear and posting TM links here in NZ_FIDONET. Would that be against the rules? As long as it doesn't get out of hand and people start posting unrelated items.

I think it would be fine at the moment. If it ever got busy we would just
start another echoarea, but for now... lot number one is a very nice tidy bit of HF gear... what am I bid :-)
