The biggest problem seems to be that the majority of people prefer to use whatever is the current hip technology to communicate. I've had a few old BBSing friends log in and create accounts for the sake of nostalgia, but
    didn't stick at it.

Perhaps having a good local place to chat will help, and I think that until they can log in with their cellphones, many won't get back into it.

Nice, I remember that program, but don't think it was one I primarily used.

For the benfit of the wider group Spiro and I chatted online a few days back about this as well. I have an idea whereby I aim to package up a turnkey BBS for folks to unzip and run out of the box. The BBS starts with a defacto guest Fidonet address quickly and is then fed several echoareas from Agency that acting as the HUB for 770 and 772.

I think the chances of mass numbers of users logging into a BBS are slim but the chances of interested past sysops or just others who want to know more picking up a turnkey system they can install, press play and use are far greater.

If we got 10 extra folks running these easy to use turnkey systems then that blows out of the water the declining figures for Fidonet NZ very quickly.

Past sysops could/would well be interested in this as would others on geekzone.co.nz

The good thing about the Mystic BBS package both you and use is that it's
being proactivly developed by James in 2014. To see a bit of software with built in binkp, polling software, echomail and file tossing etc. being worked on month after month is really exciting. I think Mystic is the ideal swiss
army knife to do the turnkey solution job.

I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks. Spiro thought perhaps offering VM ware options as well although that's a bit beyond me at present.

Anyway first steps are for me to to build an image of a turnkey BBS and test
it out. Perhaps David you would be interested in being my guinea pig?

    Food for thought...

    Best, Paul

I think this is a good idea for sysops, but users are a big part of the equation that we're still missing, and that's mainly what I was referring to
    in my last post.

I'd love to see more sysops *and* users join us. :)

There is a facebook group called Ye Olde NZ BBS Group.

The wellington one is just one I started to catch up with old friends, because well, most of my friends are from the BBS days. :) But thanks to toll calls,
I never made friends with BBSers outside wellington, unless they happened to call wellington BBSs. hehe

There's a search bar at the top of the page which you can enter a person's
name or something, and it will find related pages. But now I'm in a terminal that I can paste into, so this is the NZ one:

I would like to see a christchurh and perhaps a group name change from ye olde nz bbs group 2
just New Zealand Bullentin boards group or add 1,if same ones interested doing that.

The name doesn't bother me, and I don't really see any value in adding another one that caters to the exact same audience. :) But you have the power to
create your own group on Facebook.

The wellington one was created a long time ago, and was simply a place for those of us who were friends in the local scene to get together, so it makes sense for a Christchurch one in the same vein. The wellington BBS scene was very incestuous, so we're all very close. ;)
