    Was it so that one could read Usenet in Mystic BBS? I mean Mystic BBS is capable to do so right?

    If not why not?

    If you gate Usneet news to FTN packets you can read them and reply in Mystic.

    Mystic also allows you to post to a message base defined as type 'newsgroup' this simply ensures any posts sent are sent to 'All'

    Best bet is to use a service already available. Nick (Zone 1 ZC) runs a service, his advert is in one of the fido advert echos, I also offer nodes
    who are in fsxNet (Zone 21) a bi-directional gateway to a NNTP server I run. Info on that can be found in www.bbs.nz/fsxnet.zip if interested.

    That sounds like it could end badly. Take care!

    Thanks for the info and for the link. Downloaded and moved into the
    endlessly growing "look through" pile :)

    Care I have taken and all ended well ... or so I like to believe.

    Just want to clear one thing ... Let's say I have paid provider which I
    would like to use for the BBS as a source. Is it hard or difficult or
    what to share that so that users can also post via this account but with
    their own handles?

    Not really had time to look into this, so thought just ask before
    thinking anymore it hurts

    :P

    That should work, you're still logging in to the NNTP server with your credentials but then posting a message written by XYZ

    Not really had time to look into this, so thought just ask before

    Well for Mystic it's a user posting to echomail with their real name or
    handle. In the case of fsxNet Usenet those echomail packets are gated to a
    news post which is posted to the NNTP server using the From: name / alias supplied.

    If you look at how this reply is gated through and shows up in the newsgroup you will see it comes from my 'real name' as that is the rule I am abiding by here by posting in the Fidonet MYSTIC group.. but for others who have posted here using their alias the same things happens, and in Usenet the post shows
    as coming from the alias.

    Best, Paul

    Sounds logical.

    So you are posting here from Mystic? That's nice.

    One more thing I'd like to ask about the matter. How recourse heavy is
    getting user subscribed groups down and so. If I recall correctly fropm
    back in the days NNTP servers were quite light weight on other but disks screamed like maniacs .. but that was in 90's so :)

    Thanks Paul for answers!

    Yep I'll quote some FTN kludge lines so you can see what is being passed on
    the FTN side of things. These are usually hidden from view but it shows you some of the stuff that comes across.

    @INTL 3:770/1 3:770/3
    @REPLYADDR flipchip@protonmail.com
    @REPLYTO 3:770/3.0 UUCP
    @MSGID: <qbj3bo$knr$1@dont-email.me> 6aaf6cf2
    @REPLY: 3:770/100.0 ce751875
    @PID: SoupGate-Win32 v1.05
    @SEEN-BY: 57/0 154/10 220/70 226/100 250/3 267/800 317/2 393/68 712/848 770/0
    @SEEN-BY: 770/1 3 10 100 340 772/0 1 210 500
    @PATH: 770/3 1

    So in this case the FTN <> News gateway is at 3:770/3 and that in turn talks
    to news.bbs.nz to send/recieve the news group content etc.

    One more thing I'd like to ask about the matter. How recourse heavy is getting user subscribed groups down and so. If I recall correctly fropm back in the days NNTP servers were quite light weight on other but disks screamed like maniacs .. but that was in 90's so :)

    Well there's still quite a bit of activity in some groups. Some are full of spam while other seem to be quite good (like this one :)) so your mileage varies. It's not however as mad as it was in the 90s for volumes, especially
    if you just look at text only newsgroups and ignore any binary stuff. In my case I only carry text only newsgroups and filter the others out. Then it's just down to which newsgroups a BBS wants to carry that dictates the amount
    of FTN style gated packets they want to / will receive per day.

    Thanks Paul for answers!

    No probs, happy to help.

    Best, Paul
